- TORQUE QUESTIONS:
- Question 1: A car needs to travel 6000 feet. You have a
- choice of using 2 foot radius wheel or a 3 foot radius
- wheel. If the wheels spin at 100rpm, how long will each
- wheel need to cover the distance?
- Question 2: A motor produces 100ft.lbs of torque. If this
- motor is connected to a 10 tooth gear, which is connected
- to a 50 tooth gear of a compound gear with 50 and 10 teeth
- and the 10 tooth gear of the compound gear is connected to
- another 50 tooth gear which shares its axle with a 3
- foot radius wheel,
- a) Calculate the torque at the last gear.
- b) If you need to cover 12000 feet in 60 seconds, how much
- RPM should your motor make?
- Question 3: You need to lift a weight vertically to the
- second floor of a building. You have a wheel hanging over
- you, so you attach a rope to the weight, swing it over the
- wheel and start pulling.
- a) If you’re trying to lift a 100 lb weight, how much force
- should you apply to lift the weight?
- b) If the second floor window is 15 feet high, how much
- work are you doing?
- c) If 1 watt is .737 ft.lbs/second, and you take 10 seconds
- to lift the weight, how many watts of power do you
- generate?
- Question 4: You have the following gear configuration: 10
- tooth meshes with a 50 tooth, which meshes with another 50
- tooth, which meshes with a
- 10 tooth gear. If the motor produces 100 ft.lb of torque
- and spins at 100RPM, find the torque and RPMs at the output
- gear.
- Question 5: You have a motor that produces 200in.lbs of
- torque at 25RPMs, and it has a 5" gear permanently attached
- to it. Create a system of gears that will allow you to lift
- 1000lbs using this motor. Calculate the linear speed at
- which you'll be lifting those 1000lbs.
- Question 6: You have a bunch of gears arranged in a ring
- pattern. So for eg, gear 1 connects to gear 2, gear 2
- connects to gear 3, gear 3 connects to gear 4, and gear 4
- connects back to gear 1. The motor is attached to
- gear 1.
- If gear 1 has 100 teeth, gear 2 has 75 teeth, gear 3 has 50
- teeth, and gear 4 has 25 teeth, would this configuration
- cause any problems? Why or why not? What would happen if we
- took out the 4th gear, and arranged the remaining three
- into a triangle pattern? (This problem is about the
- direction the gears are spinning as well as gearing up
- down).
- PROPORTIONS QUESTIONS:
- Question 1: A car gets 20mpg. You have 7 gallons in your
- tank. How far can
- you travel? 140 miles
- Question 2: You need to make a trip to a city that is 100
- miles away. Your round trip will be 200 miles. How much gas
- will you need? 10 gallons
- Question 3: If you drive at 60mph, how long will you need
- to get to Boston, which is 240 miles away? 4 hours
- Question 4: You have $24 in your pocket. Each bag of candy
- has 100 pieces in it, and costs $4. If each kid gets 10
- pieces of candy, how many kids can you feed on Halloween?
- 60 kids
- Question 5: Build on question 4. You’re anticipating 120
- kids. How much candy should you give each kid if you’re not
- planning on going over your budget? 5 pieces each kid
