  1. Word and Phrase instructions:
  2.
  3. 1) Go to http://www.wordandphrase.info/analyzeText.asp
  4. 2) Type words or sentences into the box on the left and click "SEARCH"
  5. 3) Click on individual words on the right.
  6. In the bottom left you will see a list of synonyms (words with similar meanings) for the word you clicked
  7. To the right, you can see how often the word is used in different situations. (Is it more common in magazines? Is it usually an academic word?)
  8. To the right of that, below a basic definition, you can see a list of collocates. These are words that are often near the word you clicked. (For example, the first verb listed for "homework" is "do", because this is the most common verb that goes with the noun, "homework".
  9. Below the frequency and definition, you can see what are called concordance lines. These are parts of sentences and conversations where the word has appeared. This can be very useful information. It can help you understand how to use a word in a sentence.
  10.
  11. You can click "HELP" for more information about any area of the page.
  12.
  13. If, in step (2), you typed a whole sentence or a paragraph, you can see how common words are by the color on the right (after you click SEARCH). If a word is in the color of the box that says "1-500", it is one of the 500 most common words in modern American English. If it is the color of the box that says ">3000", then it is *not* one of the 3000 most common words in English. (If you are a student, many of the words in this color are probably new for you. Click on them to find out more information.)
