1. >It is night time in Equestria
2. >Night time
3. >The time of the huntress
4. >That's you, by the way
5. >You are Night Watch, and you are on the prowl
6. >There have been recent reports of diamond dog attacks on some nearby villages
7. >And you're the one mare who can stop them
8. >Along with your partner, of course
9. >"Quit fooling around! We're patrolling, not playing around in trees."
10. >You poke your head out
11. "Jasmine, you have no sense of fun."
12. >She looks at you, raising an eyebrow and snorting, "Your lance is sticking out."
13. >You turn your head to look
14. >Betrayer! A bright light blinds you
15. >You feel yourself falling
16. >With a loud,
17. "Skree!"
18. >The wind is knocked out of you as you hit the ground
19. >You hear something land next to you
20. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
21.
22. >Groaning, you open your eyes
23. >Two green eyes with slitted pupils stare back at you
24. >You could stare into those eyes forever
25. >As the rest of her face comes into focus, Jasmine shakes her head, snickering
26. >"As funny as that was, you're an idiot. Get up."
27. >You smile, "Your eyes are so pretty."
28. >She sighs and rolls those beautiful orbs, "You're hopeless."
29. >You swear a faint hint of red graces her cheeks, but it fades
30. >She walks over to you and prods you with a hoof
31. >"Come on, we're behind schedule now."
32. "Not my fault that tree is so shiny."
33. >"It was your lance. And you have wings."
34. >You glance back, stretching your leathery bat wings and wincing.
35. "Yeah, and they're pretty sore now. Probably gonna need a massage when we get back."
36. >You waggle your eyebrows at her
37. >Jasmine snorts and shakes her head again, "I'm sure you'll find someone who will help you."
38. >She turns and trots off
39. >Picking up your lance and following, you murmur,
40. "Tease"
41. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
42.
43. >You hated patrol duty
44. >You walked and walked, only to turn around and walk back
45. >But it was your civic duty to guard the Bat ponies of Equestria
46. >Flapping your wings, you rose into the air
47. >Scanning the surroundings
48. >Scanning
49. >Scanning
50. >Conclusion: Nothing
51. >You call down to Jasmine
52. "There's nothing out there."
53. >"Keep looking. If those diamond dogs get past us I'll never hear the end of it."
54. >You snicker, "Nothing gets past these eyes, don't you worry."
55. >You hear a yawn down below, "Yeah yeah."
56. "What's the matter, past your bed time?"
57. >She graced you with a withering glare, "Yes."
58. "Why do they put you on night patrol when they know... well you know?"
59. >Jasmine was diurnal. She slept during the night and was up for the day
60. >It was a little odd
61. >"I have no idea. I've requested day guard too many times to count. That's usually when we have the least amount of ponies."
62. >You drop down and land next to her.
63. "They just can't keep us apart."
64. >She smirks at you, her fang gleaming in the moonlight, "Maybe they want a responsible guard to keep an eye on you!"
65. >You laugh, "That's impossible! I'm the best Bat in the garrison!"
66. >She snickers, "Whatever you say, Night Watch."
67. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
68.
69. "Alright, one last pass then we're done."
70. >Jasmine nods, keeping her eyes forward
71. >Her ears are twitching
72. >It's kind of cute
73. >Then you notice
74. >Your ears are twitching too, picking up sounds from far away
75. >"Do you hear that?" She murmured.
76. "No, what is it?"
77. >She points, "There."
78. >Turning your head, you see three dark shapes moving in the dark
79. "Three of them. About 100 yards out."
80. >There was a reason they called you Night Watch
81. >Normally Bat ponies are almost blind as... well... a bat
82. >But not you
83. >Your eyes were specially suited to the night
84. >You couldn't quite see in the dark, but when the moon was full like this it gave you a distinct advantage
85. "They appear to be bipedal. Get ready for a fight."
86. >You pull out your lance and you hear Jasmine flip out her hoof blades
87. >"Do not engage unless they attack us first."
88. >You roll your eyes
89. "Of course they're going to try something. It's a good thing their bark is worse than their-"
90. >"Finish that and I'll hurt you." She said calmly, rubbing her hoof blades together
91. >That was strange
92. >Most Bat ponies loved puns. Maybe Jasmine thought that one was too easy
93. "We've definitely got a bone to pick with these guys!"
94. >You look at her, a smile on your face
95. >She sighs, "Why do you insist on making bad puns?"
96. "They're hilarious. I don't know what you've got stuck up your plot, but I can definitely help get it out later!"
97. >Cue eye roll, "How far are they now?"
98. >You look out where the forms were
99. "They're gone!"
100. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
101.
102. >You fly up higher, looking left and right
103. >No bipeds in sight
104. >Suddenly, from below, the sound of something crashing through the brush reaches your ears
105. >You look down
106. "Watch out!"
107. >Jasmine looks up at you
108. >A large shape comes from her left
109. >It swings a crude wooden club at her
110. >She looks down and jumps back
111. >The diamond dog snarls as he misses her by inches
112. "Looks like the big guys wants to play fetch!"
113. >A groan from Jasmine as another dog jumps out from behind her
114. >You dive, your lance aiming for this smaller target
115. >The large one raises its club
116. >You speed up, hoping to take one out before the last one shows up
117. >Jasmine takes flight, hovering around the brute's face
118. >She scores a few hits, but nothing serious
119. >The small diamond dog turns and jumps back as you come into range
120. >You leave a long gash across his chest
121. >He grunts in pain, his paw coming up and clipping your wing
122. >You begin spinning out of control
123. "Yahhhhhhhhhhh!"
124. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
125.
126. >The ground rushes towards you
127. >Your spear flies out of your hooves
128. >You hit, trying to turn a crash into a roll
129. "Oof"
130. >Not as controlled as you thought
131. >For the second time that night you were on your back and out of breath
132. >And you hadn't even made it back to Hollow Shades yet!
133. >Taking shallow breaths, you attempt to stand
134. >The ground decides this is a bad idea, rolling under your hooves and causing you to fall
135. >You shake your head, trying to clear it
136. >Jasmine is in trouble
137. >Where is your spear?
138. >Drip
139. >Drip
140. >Drip
141. >You look down
142. >Blood seems to be leaking from your head
143. >That can't be good
144. >There's already a small puddle on the ground
145. "Not even the good stuff."
146. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
147.
148. >Your lance is stuck in the ground a few feet from where you landed
149. >You grab it
150. "I'm coming, Jasmine!"
151. >You rule out flying, your wing is in pretty bad shape
152. >You begin running
153. >Jasmine is holding off the big dog, hovering around and peppering him with stab wounds while dodging the club
154. >The one you got is on the ground, bleeding and whining
155. >The third is jumping around, trying to hit Jasmine while avoiding the club as well
156. >He notices your approach and growls at you
157. "Come and get it, tough guy!"
158. >He runs at you, claws at the ready
159. >You let loose a battle screech, ready to finish this quickly
160. >The diamond dog stops, screaming and covering his ears
161. >"Augh! That noise!"
162. >You circle him warily, waiting for an ambush and keeping your lance trained on him
163. >He is shaking away the effects of the screech
164. >Suddenly you hear a cry behind you
165. >Turning, you see the large diamond dog standing over Jasmine, ready to make her a smear in the road
166. "JASMINE!"
167. >You charge, stabbing your lance deep into its leg
168. >With a howl of pain, the dog drops the club
169. >It smacks you with a huge paw, sending you flying
170. >You crash through the bushes, feeling a hundred little branches poking you all over
171. >Blood covers your left eye, sealing it shut
172. >You push yourself up, seeing the diamond dog that you stunned earlier coming towards you
173. >You have no weapon, but you're pretty good at hoof to hoof combat
174. >"No more, no more!"
175. >You stop
176. >"Too hurt, we go!"
177. >You raise your eyebrow, looking at him through your good eye
178. "Seriously?"
179. >"No more screeching! We go!"
180. >The large one picks up the other one you slashed earlier and the two run away
181. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
182.
183. >You force yourself to your hooves, walking over to Jasmine as the two forms disappear into the shadows
184. "Heh, running away with their tails between their legs."
185. >You expect a groan or laugh from Jasmine
186. >When one doesn't come you become worried
187. >Trotting over, you check her for wounds
188. >She's bleeding a bit from a cut on her foreleg, but other than that she seems okay
189. >You breath a sigh of relief, pulling out a bandage and trying to stop the bleeding in your head
190. >A soft sound makes you pause
191. >You look down at Jasmine
192. >Her chest rises and falls in even breaths
193. "Are you... snoring?!"
194. >She was asleep!
195. >You snickered
196. >The
snickering intensified
until you were full on laughing
197. "Kekekekekeke."
198. >Diamond dog attack ends in sleeping Bat pony
199. >That had probably never been reported before
200. >Snapping the hoof blades back into place, you pick up Jasmine and your lance
201. >Slinging her over your back, you begin the long walk back
202. >Time to report in
