  4. DB Post: Veatch proposed four models to outline four different approaches to doctor-patient relationships. The four models Veatch outlined were the engineering, priestly, contractual, and collegial models. In the ideal world I believe the model that has the most validility is the Contractual Model. The doctor-patient relationship described in the aforementioned model implies the decision making independence of both the doctor and patient. I view the health care industry as a segment of the customer service industry and this attitude is most accurately reflected in the Contractual Model where the patient is the customer and health care professional is the service provider (Models of Health Care, 2016). The way I handle myself with my doctors is definitely in line with the Contractual model. I understand that as the patient I need to be my own advocate; however, also view that it is the doctor’s responsibility to provide me the best medical service they can provide. My experience hasn’t always been this way, and I have met a few healthcare professionals that have forgotten they are in the service industry, they operate more in the manner of the Priestly Model where they know best and sometimes overlook valuable input added by the patient. My conclusion that the Contractual Model provides the most benefit to patient has definitely developed since I have become older, as a youth the Priestly Model definitely aligned with my lack of confidence concerning my health care and the approach worked well as a child because the doctor did know best. It will be interesting to see if as I age, if my preferred model changes again.
