  5. word roots (list 3) - With your partner, try to think of one or two words to explain the meaning of each root
  6. ego (egocentric, egotistical, egomania) = self
  7. endo (endotherm, endocrine) = inside
  8. epi (epiphyte, epidermis, epidemic) = on/upon
  9. equi (equidistant, equation) = same (quantity)
  10. erg (ergonomic, energy) = work
  11. esth/aesth (anesthetic, kinesthesia) = feel/perceive (Words that start with this root are often related to (the perception of) beauty.)
  12. eu (eulogy, euphemism, euphoria) = good (The opposite prefix is “dys”.)
  13. ex/ect (ex-husband, exit, excavate, ectotherm) = out
  14. extra (extraordinary, extrovert, extraterrestrial) = outward/beyond (This is the same “tra” or “tro” as “intro”, “contra”, “retro”.)
  15. fac/fact (artifact, factory) = make (This comes from the same Latin root as “hacer”. f->h is a common change from Latin to Spanish.)
  16. fer (transfer, ferry) = carry
  17. flect/flex (deflect, reflection, flexible) = bend
  18. fore (foreground, forecast) = before (“fore”, “front”, “first”, “prim”, “pre”, “pro” - all come from the same root)
  19. fract/frag (fracture, fragment, fragile) = break
  20. fug (refugee, fugitive) = escape/flee
  21. funct (function, defunct) = work/perform
  22. gen (generation, generate, genealogy) = make/create (By extension, this is also in words related to families and types.)
  23. geo (geography, geology, geocentric) = Earth
  24. graph (autograph, graphite, seismograph) = draw/write
  25. grat (gratify, gratuity, grateful) = please (v)
  26. helio (heliocentric, heliograph) = Sun
  27. hemo (hemophilia, hemorrhage, hemoglobin) = blood
  28. hetero (heterogeneous, heteronym) = different
  29. homo (homogeneous, homonym) = same (not quantity)
  30. hydro (hydrate, hydraulic, hydrophobia) = water (or more generally fluid)
  31. hyper (hyperextend, hyperactive, hypertension) = over/too much
  32. hypo (hypodermic, hypothermia, hypotension) = under/too little

  34. “kine” and “migr” both mean “move”. For other roots about movement, there’s something more specific you should be able to identify.

  36. The roots of words can make them seem synonymous but the real connotations are very different.
  37. prediction = the normal everyday guesses and conclusions we make about the future
  38. foretelling = a magical prediction, such as what a fortune teller might give you
  39. prophecy = a divine prediction, such as what comes from the gods
  40. (The roots all basically mean “before”+“say”.)

  42. ultrasonic = higher (frequency) than sound (that we can hear)
  43. supersonic = faster than sound
  44. hypersonic = much faster than sound (often at least 5 times faster)

  53. - The test changed on August 1st and there are no books about the new version. The old reading section was 60-80 minutes and each passage had up to 14 questions. The old listening section was 60-90 minutes and there were 4 or 6 lectures or discussions. The old speaking section had 6 tasks.

  56. - paraphrase (which sentence has the same meaning as the highlighted sentence?)
  57. - vocabulary (which word has the same meaning as the highlighted word in the text?)
  58. - fact (according to the text, which of these is true?)
  59. - negative fact (according to the text, which of these is NOT true?)
  60. - inference (what can be inferred from the text?)
  61. - purpose (why does the author use a particular phrase or include an example?)
  62. - sentence insertion (where in the paragraph does this new sentence fit best?)
  63. - summarize (which three answer choices are the most important ideas from the passage?)
  64. (- reference (what does this pronoun refer to?) - probably not on the test, but a useful skill)
  65. (- categorize (put the answer choices in the correct categories) - probably not on the test, but on some of our practice tests)

  67. Vocabulary in Context
  68. - One key point is that it’s always asking about the word in the context of the passage. The correct answer choice may not be a general synonym of the word. Some incorrect answers could be synonyms of the word in other contexts, but not in the text.
