- It has come to my attention that a lot of the Life Hacks Stack Exchange Scope is either outdated, not wanted, contradictory or otherwise. Since this is a problem that could wreck the site, I have decided to take the broken pieces of Scope and make a beginning mosaic that would be a idea of what the site should look like. So let's begin:
- This new scope is built from old pieces and takes the new changes and incorporates them into a bigger larger piece.
- [What is a Life Hack?](http://meta.lifehacks.stackexchange.com/questions/8/what-is-a-lifehack)
- Well the construction post for this question came about on Dec 9 '14 at 20:13. That was a while ago when a lot of our current members where not with us. And one of things that I think defines a Life Hack is [this response:](http://meta.lifehacks.stackexchange.com/a/1159/188)
- A lifehack is a technique that can be implemented quickly and is used to make one's physical life more efficient when a more standard approach (as defined by that area's experts) or a product is either unavailable or undesirable. Lifehacks are creative, meaning they use materials that are on hand for uses besides their intended use.
- But since we decided to use a definition that already exists to help other people understand a Life Hack more. This definition is coming from a [post](http://meta.lifehacks.stackexchange.com/a/2353/188) that got its inspiration from [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_hacking):
- If you have any suggestions or disagreements then suggest them in comments or answers. The definition for Life Hack was left simple and flexible for better changes to be made. I do not want force something down your throat I am just trying to show you how a idea of what we might make together.
- Now that we are finished with defining what a Life Hack is we can begin to decide what questions and topics are defined to be on-topic for a Life Hack:
- 1. Medical. Medical has always been a disputed problem for the site. That being said things that require a doctor's supervision, Antibiotics, Pain Medication or any oral or IV medications, as well as internal medical intervention to the body are considered off-topic. A list of On-topic and Off-topic medical questions are below: Feel free to add to them as you wish and the community will judge which agree with are scope.
- Another note on Medical is anything that could possibly cause infection, medical intervention or may be fatal is off-topic. Call your local doctor or go to a hospital for any serious medical problems. This site is not responsible for your health. Alternative medicines and herbal medicines are off-topic, as well. Some of these cannot be proven and unless governed by someone that can be widely trusted it is off-topic.
- 2. Product Suggestion. You may ask what is a product suggestion? Well, the answer is "any product or object that relates specifically to the job or method described in the answer. Taken from [this post](http://meta.lifehacks.stackexchange.com/a/35/188):
- Not so far as specific models/brands/etc unless it relates very specifically to the task at hand where other brands/models don't (i.e. you discover one brand of alcohol that can make you fly, then recommending that brand for people asking how to arrive places on time would fit).
- I think products that solve a problem being asked about is fine, but recommending one particular one over another rather than suggesting people find a form of that product with trait X which is the key to solving the hack (only use alcohol brands that can make you fly to enhance your punctuality).
- **[And](http://meta.lifehacks.stackexchange.com/a/17/188)**
- The use of product recommendations by way of example shouldn't be off topic though. Simply linking to a product without further explanation or ideas should be.
- If you have anything to add add it in the comments or answers. The community will decide what is particularity helpful and what is not.
- 3. [Psychological aspect of Life Hacks](http://meta.lifehacks.stackexchange.com/questions/40/is-there-a-psychological-aspect-of-lifehacks). In simple there is none. This was decided early and almost everybody on the site agreed that a Life Hack is something physical. That being said a Psychological Life Hack question would be more appropriate for a new site proposal.
- 4. Physical Problems. A Life Hack is a physical problem, that is something that I have been trying to stress throughout this whole Scope. A life Hack cannot be about something psychological. It can not pertain to the mind or psychological tasks like thinking better or improving speech.
- 5. A Life Hack has to be a definable problem. If the question you post is not defining a problem then it is officially off-topic. Life Hacks have to explain why they can't use a certain object. This explanation can be as simple the original product being to expensive. For more information on this see the "How to Write a Life Hack" post for more information.
