  1. <Dyel>Grounds For Midlands, Act 1, what goes bump in the night
  2. <Dan>Oh dear god
  3. <Dan>this is going to be the weird stand pasta isn't it
  4. <Dyel>After taking the message from the Legit, shorty before he is murdered by a Commander of the Citadel, Dan takes his horse through the pony trail of Midland, a trail that involves stalls of horses that run to the next stall.
  5. <Dyel>It takes 2 weeks to get to Midland this way, and Dan is half way through it.
  6. <Dyel>He has reached the near end of Midlands forest, however, a fierce storm forced him to stay back a day, Dan now runs through the midnight of a boggy wood, the full moon bright above him as his horse stampedes a cadence on the wet cobble path
  7. * Dan is restless having ridden fairly hard, always on the watch for any passing party
  8. - Deafdefiler joined
  9. - DrinkyBird set mode: +v Deafdefiler
  10. <Dyel>Dan, make a riding check.
  11. <Dan>^roll 1d100+100
  12. <Aksa>You rolled a raw 37
  13. <Aksa>Dan: your total is 137
  14. <Dyel>roll another check
  15. <Dyel>still ride.
  16. <Dyel>Or atheltics.
  17. <Dyel>which ever is higher
  18. <Dan>definetly ride
  19. <Dan>^roll 1d100+100
  20. <Aksa>You rolled a raw 66
  21. <Aksa>Dan: your total is 166
  22. <Dyel>Dan, your horse buckles underneeth something, and rolls over onto the ground, neighing as it kicks its leg, however, you barely got yourself unholstered and fall out before you are roll over by the thousand pound beast of labor
  23. <Dan>"Woah WOAH, no no no no no!"
  24. <Dyel>It does not take a vet to know that a leg should not be flopping like that
  25. <Dyel>what will you do, Dan?
  26. <Dan>"...Almost made it, Bods. Almost...."
  27. * Dan pauses and searches his remaining supplies for any apple or mints.
  28. <Dyel>you still have your rations, and some dry crab apples.
  29. <Dyel>awful stuff, but the horse isn't going to eat them
  30. <Dyel>thankfully the new lamp you've gotten hasn't broke in the crash
  31. <Dan>"Ah...looks like I can't give anything back friend. I guess what they say is true... 'crooked string only takes.'"
  32. <Dyel>The horse has calmed down from its wreck, laying on the wet road heavily
  33. * Dan draws an arrow and loads his bow, drawing it to point directly between the horses eyes.
  34. <Dan>"Bodkin, I release you from burden. Go on ahead."
  35. <Dyel>It's not a difficult shot, especially for your cursed eyes.
  36. * Dan closes his eyes and fires
  37. * Dan looks away, and unstrings his bow, gathering supplies. He leaves the horse untouched.
  38. <Dan>"Alright, by foot then."
  39. <Dyel>It is done, like magic, the horse is put into a sleep that it will not wake up from, your supplies are gathered, and the road ahead is ready, and full of puddles you can't see the bottom of, the full moon shines, but is clouded, only giving the barest of moon light
  40. <Dyel>BGM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkDo4cTuSTc
  41. <Dyel>Do you stick by the road?
  42. <Dan>((of course not))
  43. <Dan>((;P))
  44. <Dyel>As you walk, your foot gets bogged down in satuated mud, sinking in, a hole, like some kind of wallow
  45. * Dan grips his boot tightly and pulls up gradually, using his spurs to dislodge any trapped air
  46. <Dyel>the water fills the empty space of your boot and makes it hard to pull out, this is difficult terrain at the least.
  47. <Dyel>But no one is going to be tracking you
  48. <Dan>"Ha, reminds me of back home."
  49. * Dan smiles, then the look freezes on his face and he restrings his bow before carrying on
  50. <Dyel>You don't hear anything unnormal, but the darkness unerves you
  51. <Dyel>Shadows that create faces, clawed hands, fiends lurking behind the trees
  52. <Dan>he peers deep into any puddles, up into tree's and looks into deep shadow for any strings of life, that would mark something untree
  53. <Dyel>everything seems to have sheltered from itself from the storm ealier
  54. * Dan puts arrow to bow, with replacements in his off hand, closing the lid on the lantern, narrowing it to a thin beam.
  55. <Dyel>you can see the puddles, and more imporantly, the the mud holes, the foot prints.
  56. * Dan examines the foot prints, to determine if the person was wearing metal shoes, leather, or if they were even human
  57. <Dyel>6 large holes in the ground with nothing defining, like spikes that went through the ground, it makes you think of the large creature shasing you
  58. <Dyel>chasing*
  59. <Dan>That gets his attention.
  60. <Dyel>which way did it go, backward or forward? That's a tricky question you cannot answer
  61. * Dan thinks back to the monster he beat, and considers how well he could have done without his horse.
  62. * Dan beats a hasty retreat back to the path, at the very least he'll be able to see something coming if it was coming
  63. <Dyel>you go back to the where the horse was, or where you think it was, the horse is gone.
  64. <Dyel>BGM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-heSRbvCErU
  65. <Dan>"Huh, guess it wasn't that bad of a break," Dan chuckles under his breath.
  66. <Dyel>Nothing seems to unnatural about it.
  67. <Dyel>No drag marks, no blood stain, just ceased to exist
  68. * Dan examines the area where the horse broke it's leg, keeping an eye up in the trees above and around him.
  69. <Dyel>puddles, to dark to see the bottom, even if you use a light, the relfection is too black
  70. * Dan uses a stick to examine the liquid in the puddles
  71. <Dyel>It is really muddy water, not right for a cobble road
  72. * Dan tries to remember exactly what the monster that chased him looked like, and every specific about how it was summoned.
  73. <Dan>"Hmm."
  74. <Dyel>The horror of the monster chasing you is something burned into your mind, you remember so clearly that you'll have trouble ever forgetting it, but how it was summoned, well it appeared over smoke and fire over a hill
  75. * Dan briefly wonders if it'd be possible to backtrack and go around the forest.
  76. <Dyel>Perhaps if you had 3 months, a guide, and a message that Midland needed 1 week ago
  77. <Dan>"Right."
  78. * Dan listens quietly.
  79. <Dyel>the sound of the muddy water you disturbed settling is what you hear, it sounds, off.
  80. * Dan backs up 100 paces, hides behind a tree and pauses
  81. <Dyel>A whole lot of nothing
  82. * Dan shoots the puddle
  83. <Dyel>Your arrow breaks apart, mud would not shatter your arrow
  84. <Dan>he attaches an arrow to a rope, and tosses the arrow into a puddle, then draws it back towards him to see what happens
  85. <Dyel>the arrow gets stuck on something
  86. <Dan>in the pool or on the draw back?
  87. <Dyel>On the draw back
  88. * Dan tugs on it slowly again, testing if it's a hard stick or something else. Meanwhile he examines the mud on his boot from earlier
  89. <Dyel>It must be a stick, because it lifts and falls with effort, looks like any old mud
  90. <Dan>((hard stick as in "when I pull, how much give does it offer"))
  91. <Dyel>((A little bit))
  92. <Dan>"Shit, If I had the time, I could bottle the stuff and sell it for a fortune."
  93. * Dan silently marks down in his head the forests location, and marks out it's distance to the undead territory
  94. <Dyel>what will you do, Dan?
  95. * Dan ignites an arrow and shoots it into the mud
  96. <Dyel>Roll a new character, the explosion kills you
  97. <Dyel>(not really)
  98. <Dyel>You have now one probably useless arrow
  99. <Dyel>You realize you're still still holding onto the rope of a stuck arrow right?
  100. <Dan>you can hold something in your hand and shoot an arrow...besides I'm not going to reach into the mud to untie the rope from the arrow am I?
  101. <Dan>i'm shooting through the rope to get to the mud
  102. <Dyel>Alright Mcgaiever.
  103. <Dyel>Continuing

  107. * Dan does one last test
  108. - Jolt left
  109. <Dan>reaching into his supplies, he removes a small pouch stuffed with cotton. From within he retrieves a small bell, clapper muted with cotton, a small, long string attached to a ring on the top, and the cotton below.
  110. * Dan attaches the bell to an arrow, drawing bowstring back with cotton string gripped in teeth. He moves back 200 paces, watching his step and then looses in the general area of the holes.
  111. <Dan>the arrow fires, and the cotton is removed mid flight

  140. <Aksa>You rolled a raw 6
  141. <Aksa>Dan: your total is 14
  142. <Dyel>Dan, a hand reaches out from the water and strokes your leg, you jump away at the touch
  143. <Dan>describe this "hand"
  144. <Dyel>Do you wish to take the time to stop moving and investigate it?
  145. <Dan>depends on if it's still moving towards me
  146. <Dyel>Do you wish to take the time and find out?
  147. <Dan>...how much noise did I just make by jumping back
  148. <Dyel>A lot.
  149. <Dyel>Not nearly as much as your bell though.
  150. * Dan cheeses it...quite like
  151. <Dyel>How fast is Dan?
  152. <Dan>Dan has been sprinting away from trouble for his entire life, 80% of the fights he's ever been in have been done while in motion away from the target in question, and the other 20% are split up between fights from behind cover and fights where he paid people to beat other people up
  153. <Dyel>Movement speed please.
  154. <Dyel>I assume you ditch the rope.
  155. <Dan>9 and yep
  156. <Dyel>Skeletal hands begin rising from the water and try to grab you, Dan's quickness avoiding the majority of their grasps

  159. <Dyel>Roll intiative

  204. <Dyel>That is your turn
  205. <Dyel>The skeleton 'horde' shuffles its way behind you, but quick feet will keep you ahead, the second skeleton takes its sword and...chucks it at you!
