  161. 7:02
  162. medacris [Mibbit@hide-24F82FF0.nycmny.fios.verizon.net] entered the room.

  182. 7:03
  183. Permafry_42

  219. 7:05
  220. Cheeseness
  221. Alrighty, let me fix the audio. I see what's happening
  222. 7:05
  223. OTMJohn
  224. I can't hear Cheese's beautiful vocalizations
  225. 7:05
  226. liorean
  227. Hmm. This stream is missing a quality control for some reason, usually Twitch has one of those! And no audio
  228. 7:05
  229. Syd
  230. You need to be a partner with Twitch to get quality options if you're under something like 50 viewers
  231. 7:05
  232. Cheeseness
  233. Yeah
  234. 7:05
  235. Syd
  236. Once you get to around that number, the options kick in
  237. 7:05
  238. Cheeseness
  239. Should have audio now
  240. Let me know if we don't
  241. 7:06
  242. Syd
  243. Yep, there's audio
  244. 7:06
  245. Permafry_42
  246. k its working
  247. 7:06
  248. OTM_Danielle
  249. Roger that
  250. 7:06
  251. OTMJohn
  252. yeah we're good
  253. 7:06

  259. 7:06
  260. yama_
  261. Cheese!
  262. 7:06

  266. 7:06
  267. OTMJohn
  268. Hi!
  269. 7:07
  270. OTM_Danielle
  271. Howdy!
  272. I do all things social, marketing and help keep John fed so he can make the game.
  273. 7:07
  274. OTMJohn
  275. What a friendly guy. you'd have no idea he's running on 4 hours of sleep
  276. 7:07
  277. Cheeseness
  278. Ha ha, he prerecorded it before he went to bed
  279. 7:07
  280. Permafry_42
  281. the subtle glitches in the text are great too
  282. 7:07
  283. OTMJohn
  284. OH! lol
  285. brilliant
  286. 7:08
  287. kisak
  288. that's some interesting glyph corruption, was it supposed to do that?
  289. 7:08
  290. Cheeseness
  291. Yeah, I remember when they were added in - I thought they were fantastic but wanted to check that they weren't actually glitches
  292. 7:08
  293. Syd
  294. We had encountered an odd bug last night while Cheeseness was testing his streaming setup. The combat bot outside of the repurposing facility activated but then just stood there, so the combat music was stuck.
  295. 7:08
  296. Fhqwhgod
  297. Spiderman!
  298. 7:08
  299. OTMJohn
  300. Interesting.
  301. 7:08
  302. Cheeseness
  303. I'm playing an older build though
  304. 7:08
  305. OTMJohn
  306. yeah there's still a few bugs related to the combat music
  307. OH! really
  308. 7:08
  309. Sven_Q45 [Mibbit@hide-4DA91BCD.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] entered the room.
  310. 7:09
  311. Syd
  312. Hey Sven_Q45
  313. 7:09
  314. Cheeseness
  315. Yeah - new mouse stuff doesn't play nicely with streaming for me
  316. 7:09
  317. Sven_Q45
  318. hi
  319. 7:09
  320. OTMJohn
  321. (and yes, the visual glitchy stuff should be intentional)
  322. Hey Sven
  323. 7:09
  324. liorean
  325. I get about one frame every other second... but audio seems smooth and fine
  326. 7:09
  327. OTMJohn
  328. so this is the old mouse system we're looking at eh
  329. 7:09
  330. medacris
  331. I really like this so far.
  332. 7:10
  333. Sven_Q45
  334. Anyone remember the question about a gone home retai? This week I preordered it.
  335. 7:10
  336. Permafry_42
  337. i like the addition of little fireflies and small lighting effects
  338. 7:10
  339. OTMJohn
  340. Gone home retail?
  341. cheers!
  342. 7:10
  343. Sven_Q45
  344. Yes.
  345. 7:10
  346. OTMJohn
  347. I wanted to do all sorts of little plans snapping at you, etc, but we just ran out of time
  348. **Plants
  349. 7:11
  350. Permafry_42
  351. ah sweet did they including anything special in it like the super meat boy retail version?
  352. 7:11
  353. Schmuppinger [Mibbit@hide-BEAFE251.unity-media.net] entered the room.
  354. 7:11
  355. Cheeseness
  356. Hey Schmuppinger
  357. 7:12
  358. OTMJohn
  359. Hey Cheese, do we get to hear your glorious voice in this one, or do you stay silent
  360. 7:12
  361. Schmuppinger
  362. hi Cheeseness :>
  363. 7:12
  364. Schmuppinger
  365. and all the others, of course
  366. 7:12
  367. OTMJohn
  368. Hey man!
  369. 7:12
  370. Syd
  371. We usually do these things longplay-style, without voice over.
  372. 7:12
  373. Cheeseness
  374. I love the glimpses we get of the shadowy character in the background
  375. 7:13
  376. OTMJohn
  377. cheers.
  378. 7:13
  379. Cheeseness
  380. Yeah, if we don't have voice over, then everybody gets equal voice in chat
  381. 7:13
  382. Permafry_42
  383. the idea is that we do most of the chatting in a chat box while we watch the gameplay
  384. 7:13
  385. Sven_Q45
  386. Permafry _42 http://www.adventurecorner.de/news/5212/gone-home-collectors-edition-erscheint-naechste-woche
  387. 7:13
  388. OTMJohn
  389. we actually had a different character here originally (Cheese, you probably remember) but when we went through and cleaned upa the writing, it made a bit more sense to have one main "badguy" through all of this
  390. 7:13
  391. Cheeseness
  392. I do!
  393. 7:13
  394. Permafry_42
  395. that way all of us get to talk together
  396. 7:13
  397. Babar left the room (quit: Quit: ).
  398. 7:14
  399. Cheeseness
  400. I might end up doing a stream and talking over the top about stuff that I personally like/dislike at some stage in the future though
  401. 7:14
  402. yama_
  403. Is this game made in 2D or 3D? Looks 2D to me but Kentucky Route Zero first fooled me into think it was 2D, too...
  404. 7:14
  405. Cheeseness
  406. This sequence is great
  407. 7:14
  408. OTMJohn
  409. 3d!
  410. 7:14
  411. yama_
  412. Ohh.
  413. 7:14
  414. OTMJohn
  415. I want to do more stuff with that ascii screen effect in the next game
  416. never got to play with it much
  417. 7:15
  418. Cheeseness
  419. I still feel like that crane movement is too fast to feel weighty
  420. 7:15
  421. Permafry_42
  422. that gone home collector's edition looks fantastic. I hope it comes to canada as well
  423. 7:15
  424. OTMJohn
  425. yeah, the game is 3d, but rendered with a camera with a very small field of view. most of the environment is 2d cards and such
  426. 7:15
  427. OTM_Danielle
  428. I've seen it called 2.5D places
  429. But that may just be game critics being fancy
  430. 7:15
  431. Mimness [Mibbit@hide-BDC870AD.lns20.hba1.internode.on.net] entered the room.
  432. 7:15
  433. OTMJohn
  434. (yeah that crane does haul ass)
  435. 7:15
  436. yama_
  437. Haha. I see.
  438. 7:15
  439. Cheeseness
  440. Hey Mimness
  441. 7:15
  442. OTMJohn
  443. Hey Mim!
  444. 7:15
  445. yama_
  446. Good morning, Mimness.
  447. 7:15
  448. Permafry_42
  449. i like the idea of a sidescrolling p&c. what made you come up with the idea?
  450. 7:16
  451. Mimness
  452. Morning everyone! ^w^
  453. 7:16
  454. Permafry_42
  455. morning mimi
  456. 7:16
  457. OTMJohn
  458. ah, I'm just a nerd and like those two genres. I really loved Metroid, but I always wanted a bit more interactivity.
  459. 7:16
  460. Cheeseness
  461. Which aspects did you find most interesting from Metroid?
  462. 7:17
  463. Sven_Q45
  464. Permafry_42 I don´t think so. But ater you can buy it on Ebay I think.
  465. 7:17
  466. Sven_Q45 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  467. 7:17
  468. OTMJohn
  469. the emotional feeling of exploration, actually. not a lot of other stuff comes through, I think.
  470. 7:17
  471. Sven_Q45 [Mibbit@hide-4DA91BCD.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] entered the room.
  472. 7:17
  473. Syd
  474. It's interesting to play from the perspective of an AI that has to follow its own version of the laws of robotics.
  475. 7:17
  476. Cheeseness
  477. Totally. The plot is super compelling
  478. 7:17
  479. OTMJohn
  480. Syd, are you into sci-fi?
  481. 7:17
  482. Sven_Q45
  483. oops.
  484. 7:17
  485. Syd
  486. Yeah, I like sci-fi.
  487. 7:18
  488. Permafry_42
  489. i have a us postal address, so i might have to use that to get it. Assuming I can afford the collector's edition, of course
  490. 7:18
  491. Sven_Q45
  492. Wel
  493. 20 Euros.
  494. 7:18
  495. OTMJohn
  496. for Gone Home collector's edition?
  497. 7:18
  498. Permafry_42
  499. i like the way the ai don't have any emotion in their voice even when their character shows signs of emotion in the choice of words
  500. othjohn yep
  501. *otmjohn
  502. 7:19
  503. OTMJohn
  504. Yeah, I'm really glad I had a guy to help direct the voice acting there
  505. I think it would have been better to have no voice than bad voice
  506. 7:20
  507. OTM_Danielle
  508. Hiring Caleb Allard was a real strike of genius.
  509. 7:20
  510. Mimness
  511. Whoops, Cheese forgot the blood
  512. 7:20
  513. OTMJohn
  514. Oh no. worst backtracking problem in the game by far
  515. if you forget the GD blood
  516. 7:20
  517. Cheeseness
  518. Actually, it's good, I think. If you couldn't do that, you'd spend a lot of time not exploring
  519. 7:21
  520. OTMJohn
  521. hmm perhaps
  522. 7:21
  523. Cheeseness
  524. But for speedruns or walkthroughs, sure
  525. 7:21
  526. Permafry_42
  527. backtracking kinda makes metroidvanias what they are imo
  528. 7:21
  529. OTMJohn
  530. people totally ripped into The Cave for that issue
  531. 7:21
  532. Syd
  533. Some people get really grumpy about backtracking though.
  534. 7:21
  535. OTM_Danielle
  536. It's a pain when you feel like it's for no purpose
  537. 7:21
  538. OTMJohn
  539. yeah
  540. 7:22
  541. OTM_Danielle
  542. But I like having a chance to see more of the environment if there is something changing
  543. 7:22
  544. Cheeseness
  545. ;_;
  546. 7:22
  547. OTMJohn
  548. what do you all think about this recent subject of how games are being dumbled down here and there
  549. dumbed*** dumbledore has nothing to do with it

  581. Backtracking feels, to me, like it's really good as a mechanic only in the cases that you can be pretty much certain that it's not in vain as a player. I hate when I have to try backtrack for hours before I finally figure out that the quest is bugged in some games.

  633. I don't mind backtracking if it makes sense, say, if later on I realise I need something I passed earlier. So long as I understand the necessity it's okay. In The Cave though, if you want to play with all the characters you have to play 4 times, which means if you backtrack you could end up doing some parts 8 or more times...

  891. 7:40
  892. Cheeseness
  893. So in some ways her physical form is ambiguous at most, I think

  895. 7:41
  896. OTMJohn

  901. 7:41

  904. 7:41
  905. OTMJohn
  906. yeah agreed
  907. I think it's more restrictive at this point
  908. 7:41

  1060. OTM_Danielle
1061. Mimness thats how some of our friends with littles feel sometimes
  1062. 7:50
  1063. liorean
1064. Not only did they fail to get reboot season 5 going, but they failed multiple times to get the planned full length films funded as well
  1065. 7:50
  1066. OTMJohn
1067. "Great instincts" as a hint maybe?
  1068. 7:50
  1069. Cheeseness
1070. I didn't notice until yesterday that the coin has a sparkle on it. When did that go in?
  1071. 7:50
  1072. medacris
1073. I understand the feeling, but I don't know if I would have shot the baby.
  1074. 7:50
  1075. OTMJohn
1076. should have been in since V1
  1077. 7:51
  1078. Mimness
  1079. OTM_Danielle: Haha! Yeeeeeeah.
  1080. 7:51
  1081. Cheeseness
  1082. Littles are the best
  1083. 7:51
  1084. liorean
1085. Medacris: We've heard that news about a half dozen times now. I'll believe it when I see the reruns of it in the TV listings...
  1086. 7:51
  1087. medacris
  1088. @liorean: I know, I know...
  1089. 7:51
  1090. OTMJohn
1091. I need some other ideas for achievements actually..
  1092. 7:51
  1093. OTM_Danielle
1094. Medacris - I'm only being inflammatory. Our friends with a 4 month old leave us with her and 2 cans of guiness when we babysit
  1095. 7:52
  1096. Cheeseness
1097. I might have some ideas
  1098. 7:52
  1099. Mimness
1100. The closer we get to them the more we get treated like them. Great line.
  1101. 7:52
  1102. Permafry_42
1103. so that would mean reboot... *puts on sunglasses* is getting a reboot *YEEEEEEEAH!*
  1104. 7:52
  1105. OTMJohn
1106. you know they're always welcome!
  1107. thanks!
  1108. 7:52
  1109. Cheeseness
1110. I'll bring them up during the week
  1111. 7:52
  1112. OTMJohn
  1113. hahha Permafry
  1114. that'd make a good patch
1115. maybe 5-10 more achievements + some commentary
  1116. 7:52
  1117. Cheeseness
1118. I like the insinuation here that the Administrator thinks that Arid might be malfunctioning
  1119. 7:53
  1120. OTMJohn
1121. haha yeah. this went through a few iterations. Caleb made it nice
  1122. 7:53
  1123. medacris
  1124. @OTM_Danielle: It's okay. I don't blame you.
  1125. 7:53
  1126. OTMJohn
1127. I like that he tiptoes around her ego
  1128. 7:53
  1129. Cheeseness

  1131. ing
  1132. 7:53
  1133. Permafry_42
1134. i love the subtle coolness to his speech like "totally"
  1135. 7:53
  1136. OTMJohn
1137. We could have you talking about all the linux bugs
  1138. 7:54
  1139. Cheeseness
1140. I like that it's dated coolness though
1141. He still feels a little out of touch
  1142. 7:54
  1143. OTM_Danielle
  1144. 1983 coolness
  1145. 7:54
  1146. OTMJohn
1147. The actor that played that mainframe ai is super tallented
  1148. (they all were really)
  1149. 7:54
  1150. Cheeseness
  1151. OTM_Danielle: Exactly!
  1152. 7:54
  1153. liorean
1154. I don't like games that place normal game progression events as achievements. I'm of the mind that all achievements should be things that you have to go out of your way in the regular gameplay to achieve - either that, or they should be skill based.
  1155. 7:54
  1156. Mimness
1157. 1983 is the best kind of coolness
  1158. 7:54
  1159. OTMJohn
1160. hehe he used to be even more out of date actually.
  1161. 7:54
  1162. Permafry_42
1163. yeah i like the idea of achievements as easter eggs
  1164. 7:55
  1165. medacris
  1166. Mm.
  1167. 7:55
  1168. Permafry_42
1169. but not as either pointless tasks or progression reminders
  1170. 7:55
  1171. medacris
1172. I'll have to check this out if it's on Mac.
  1173. 7:55
  1174. OTMJohn
1175. liorean - it's a good point. we thought we should have a few to give a little feedback that you're progressing and let people know that there ARE acheivements
  1176. 7:55
  1177. Cheeseness
1178. The door to the lab could do with an interaction marker like the diagnostics door downstairs did
  1179. 7:55
  1180. Permafry_42
1181. medacris its on humblestore and steam
  1182. 7:55
  1183. OTMJohn
  1184. medacris - it is!
  1185. 7:55
  1186. Syd
1187. Achievements that are actual achievements are nice, really clever ones can be motivational
  1188. 7:55
  1189. OTMJohn
  1190. Cheese - which?
  1191. 7:55
  1192. Cheeseness
  1193. Yum
  1194. 7:56
  1195. OTMJohn
1196. Speaking of which, I still have to patch the Military Machine achievement. forgot about that one
1197. apparently we've got an achievement in the game that's next to impossible
  1198. 7:56
  1199. medacris
1200. @Permafry_42 @OTMJohn: Awesome. Onto the wishlist it goes.
  1201. 7:56
  1202. OTM_Danielle
1203. 2 more days left in the Steam sale...
  1204. 7:56
  1205. OTMJohn
1206. Oh, our sales are picking up slightly btw
1207. maybe because of Giant Bomb?
  1208. 7:57
  1209. Mimness
1210. I have no problem feeding that child a head.
  1211. 7:57
  1212. Permafry_42
1213. btw do you guys know when you'll be able to have the humblestore version of the game go on sale? I would rather have the humble version since some day i think linux os will become the norm
  1214. 7:57
  1215. Cheeseness
1216. OTMJohn: The upstairs door next to the tag reader could do with an interaction point to help people recognise that that's an area to look out for later
  1217. 7:57
  1218. kisak
1219. hey dad! what's for dinner? Robot: Meat
  1220. 7:57

  1224. Syd
  1225. "Nom nom nom!"
  1226. 7:57
  1227. medacris
  1228. "Num num num!"

  1233. Yummy nutritious face meat.
  1234. 7:57
  1235. OTM_Danielle
  1236. My favourite
  1237. 7:57
  1238. OTMJohn
  1239. Cheesseness: Good idea
  1240. 7:58
  1241. Permafry_42
  1242. ah. didn't know that
  1243. 7:58
  1244. medacris
1245. And Giant Bomb is fantastic, especially with indie games.
  1246. 7:58
  1247. Cheeseness
1248. But Humble's accountless DRM free stuff is better IMO
  1249. 7:58
  1250. Permafry_42
1251. still drm free is always preferable
  1252. 7:58
  1253. Permafry_42
  1254. cheeseness agreed
  1255. 7:58
  1256. OTMJohn
1257. Not 100% sure when a Humble Store Sale will happen, but it will happen!
  1258. 7:58
  1259. Mimness
1260. I love the num num num! That cracked me up. I hope this whole area was supposed to be darkly humorous, and I'm not just a psychopath... O_o
  1261. 7:58
  1262. yama_
1263. Looks interesting enough. I'll buy the game later when the Steam sale is over.
  1264. 7:58
  1265. OTM_Danielle
1266. John and I often check each other to make sure we're not psychopaths
  1267. 7:58
  1268. Cheeseness
1269. You are just a psychopath
  1270. 7:58
  1271. OTM_Danielle
  1272. Dark humour is allowed
  1273. 7:58
  1274. OTMJohn
1275. hahaha yeah Mimness, it was
  1276. 7:59
  1277. Permafry_42
1278. awesome. I'll be sure to get the game and play it then. I'd get it now but as a university student i'm pretty much always broke
  1279. 7:59
  1280. psymin
1281. I'm really enjoying this game, thanks for suggesting it
  1282. 7:59
  1283. OTMJohn
  1284. ah, being broke
  1285. 7:59
  1286. Cheeseness
  1287.
  1288. 7:59
  1289. liorean
1290. I usually have a preference of GOG DRM Free > Humble Bundle DRM free > Steam > Origin/UPlay/etc.
  1291. 7:59
  1292. Mimness
1293. OTM_Danielle: Sounds like you guys have a good set up. Provided you don't both turn at the same time.
  1294. 7:59
  1295. medacris
1296. The psychopathic moments are funny, though.
  1297. 7:59
  1298. Cheeseness
1299. When GOG launches Linux support, they'll probably become my preference as well
  1300. Take first, read later
  1301. 8:00
  1302. OTMJohn
1303. GOG turned me down by the way
  1304. (I'm not bitter though)
  1305. 8:00
  1306. medacris
1307. I usually opt for Steam, but GOG has been great so far
  1308. 8:00
  1309. Cheeseness
  1310. Aww, really?
  1311. 8:00
  1312. OTMJohn
1313. hehehe maybe again in the future if I can provbe I have some sales
  1314. 8:00
  1315. liorean
1316. Did GOG motivate their refusal?
  1317. 8:00
  1318. OTMJohn
  1319. motivate?
  1320. 8:01
  1321. liorean
1322. Did they give a reason why they refused, or just say that you were?
  1323. 8:01
  1324. Mimness
1325. The community could harrass, ahem, I mean request The Fall on GOG by starting a request thread?
  1326. 8:01
  1327. Cheeseness
1328. I *really* *really* want to use the severed hand to push the elevator and console buttons
  1329. 8:01
  1330. OTMJohn
  1331. hahaha
  1332. 8:01
  1333. OTM_Danielle
  1334. Mimness - Go forth!
  1335. 8:01
  1336. Mimness
1337. He does. He talks about it all the time.
  1338. 8:01
  1339. Cheeseness
1340. Yeah, their feature/game request and voting system helps I think
  1341. 8:02
  1342. OTMJohn
1343. liorean - worried that it wouldn't appeal to their core audience
  1344. 8:02
  1345. Syd
1346. GOG turned down Dominique Pamplemousse because they thought it wouldn't be a good fit for GOG.
  1347. 8:02
  1348. OTMJohn
  1349. Dominique Pamplemousse?
  1350. 8:02
  1351. Mimness
1352. Cheese is sad that it doesn't say that the speaker is sticking out of the kid's bum anymore.
  1353. 8:03
  1354. medacris
1355. Oh, btw, what were the inspirations for the game? Asimov? Star Trek? Alien?
  1356. 8:03
  1357. Cheeseness
1358. All of the above, I suspect D
  1359.
  1360. 8:03
  1361. OTMJohn
  1362. yup!
  1363. 8:03
  1364. Syd
1365. OTMJohn: It was an adventure game that was Kickstarted, focuses a lot on gender issues from what I've heard.
  1366. 8:03
  1367. OTMJohn
1368. Alien was the biggest visual influence
1369. interesting Syd, I'll have to take a look
  1370. actually
1371. the guys over at Alien: Isolation made an interesting video about the GUI elements in their game
  1372. 8:04
  1373. Permafry_42
1374. the fog reminds me of limbo a little
  1375. 8:04
  1376. OTMJohn
1377. i was amazed to see it because they share my inspiration almost exactly
1378. yeah Limbo, sorry - in terms of the environments, was a huge inspiration
  1379. 8:04
  1380. Syd
1381. The Alien game coming up looks pretty promising. It's nice to see something that's a bit more Alien than Aliens.
  1382. 8:05
  1383. Cheeseness
1384. When you were on SteamLUG Cast, you mentioned that the Asimov/laws of robotics aspect turned out to get more attention than you expected. What do you think of audiences influencing creativity in game development?
1385. Because you picked up on that and ran with it right?
  1386. 8:05
  1387. OTMJohn
  1388. yeah totally
1389. and I'm totally down with that stuff
1390. actually, I think that part of The Fall's problem is that it's not as immediately readable in the storefront as say, a first person shooter
1391. people who like it offer up ways of interpereting what it is-- that kind of stuff has been helpful to me. actually, we were thinking of going further away from the "rules" thing, but we stayed there because it's something that people know, like, and can understand
  1392. 8:06
  1393. Permafry_42
1394. oh yeah are you looking forwards to inside from playdead?
  1395. 8:07
  1396. Cheeseness
1397. It's tricky to pitch. Talking about Metroid implies more platforming/action than there is, and talking about Monkey Island implies a different style of interaction (though fans of both might appreciate the game without those expectations)
  1398. 8:07
  1399. OTMJohn
1400. I'm totaly interested in what playdead does ^_^
  1401. 8:07
  1402. Cheeseness
1403. Ah, I'm not being fast enough here. Did you end up making this longer, John?
  1404. 8:07
  1405. OTMJohn
  1406. yeah agreed, Cheeseiness
  1407. 8:07
  1408. Permafry_42
1409. yeah same. I like the orwellian feel of it
  1410. 8:07
  1411. medacris
1412. LIMBO is one of the most recently visually arresting indie games, and it works well for a space game like this, so well done.
  1413. 8:07
  1414. Cheeseness
1415. If you don't skip dialogue, it becomes pretty tight
  1416. 8:07
  1417. OTMJohn
  1418. making what longer?
  1419. 8:08
  1420. Mimness
1421. OTMJohn: I feel like the "rules" gave it a solid start. It is a good, familiar launching point.
  1422. 8:08
  1423. Cheeseness
  1424. The baby timeout
  1425. 8:08
  1426. yama_
1427. Just looked at the Steam page for The Fall and wondering if all three parts were funded with Kickstarter or if you're hoping the game will sell well enough to fund the remaining parts.
  1428. 8:08
1429. Schmuppinger left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  1430. 8:08
  1431. medacris
1432. I do think you can see Metroid and Monkey Island influence in here, though it's very much its own thing.
  1433. 8:08
  1434. Mimness
  1435. Yay! The baby!
  1436. 8:08
  1437. OTMJohn
1438. thanks medacris! Mimness - cheers , I think so too
  1439. 8:08
  1440. Cheeseness
1441. I might finish up the stream there
  1442. 8:08
  1443. OTMJohn
  1444. oH!! hmm... I think I added 5 seconds
  1445. 8:08
  1446. Cheeseness
1447. But by all means continue chatting
  1448. 8:08
  1449. kisak
1450. baby is the weakest link, goodbye
  1451. 8:09
  1452. OTMJohn
1453. yama_ we were hoping that yes, but it looks like we'll be okay to make the other ones
1454. I made a safe enough gamble and it seems that we'll be just okay.
  1455. 8:09
  1456. yama_
  1457. That's cool.
  1458. 8:09
  1459. OTM_Danielle
1460. Kickstarter is a brilliant way to test if the market wants what you think they will like
  1461. 8:09
  1462. Mimness
  1463. Yay! More Fall!
  1464. 8:09
  1465. OTMJohn
1466. ah! what happened? you quit out?
  1467. 8:09
  1468. medacris
1469. @OTMJohn: No problem! Thanks to you and @OTMDanielle for making such an awesome game.
  1470. 8:09
  1471. Permafry_42
1472. i love subtle creepiness in a game world; it always makes it feel more engaging
  1473. 8:10

1475. Yeah, the eerie atmosphere is awesome
  1476. 8:10
  1477. OTMJohn

1490. Red Thread Games just the other day decided to make Dreamfall Chapters be released in chapters and people are as upset about it as they were with DF splitting DFA into two parts and Revolution making BS5 a two-parter as well. >.>

  1492. Cheeseness
1493. I always feel hampered when I'm streaming - it's hard to balance attention between the game and chat
  1494. 8:10
  1495. OTMJohn
1496. Ah cheers Syd, this was a lot of fun

1514. For anybody who's interested, I wrote a review which covers my experiences with The Fall starting with being fascinated by the Kickstarter pitch and going through to ending up getting a small credit on the game http://steamcommunity.com/id/cheeseness/recommended/290770/
  1515. 8:11
  1516. medacris

  1547. Cheeseness
  1548. Aww
  1549. 8:13
  1550. OTMJohn
  1551. I think absolutely they'll be easier
1552. yeah I think we're going to have some fun
  1553. I've got a few crazy ideas
  1554. 8:13
  1555. Cheeseness
  1556. It's pretty exciting
  1557. 8:13
  1558. OTMJohn
1559. but we should be able to focus on art and gameplay this time around, without having to wory so much about scripting a whole pile of back end
  1560. 8:14
  1561. Cheeseness
  1562. Right
  1563. 8:14
  1564. yama_
1565. Has the overarching story been finished or is that still a work in progress?
  1566. 8:14
  1567. Cheeseness
1568. Are there any aspects of the game/mechanics that you feel you'd like to continue to refine?
  1569. 8:14
  1570. OTMJohn
1571. the general story has been laid out in terms of the character progression but there's a lot of wiggle room. I hope ep2 will top ep1 in terms of creativity
  1572. yes! the combat
  1573. 8:14
  1574. Permafry_42
1575. oh yeah what engine does the fall run on?
  1576. 8:14
  1577. OTMJohn
1578. the combat is a bit meh
  1579. Unity
  1580. 8:14
  1581. Cheeseness
1582. Also of interest, I've interviewed John on SteamLUG Cast a couple of times. The archive of the most recent one isn't up (should be here soon), but his first appearance from last year can be found here https://steamlug.org/cast/s01e10
  1583. 8:14
  1584. OTMJohn
1585. I'm even tempted to hire a designer for the combat
  1586. 8:15
  1587. Permafry_42
1588. ah makes sense. unity is great for games like this
  1589. 8:15
  1590. OTMJohn
  1591. yeah that's always a good time
1592. Unity is fantastic, I recomend it to anyone
  1593. 8:15
  1594. Cheeseness
1595. Ha ha, actually combat was involved with what I mentioned before the stream. Glad to hear it's something that you feel still has potential to go farther
  1596. 8:15
  1597. OTMJohn
  1598. yeah absolutely
  1599. 8:15
  1600. Permafry_42
1601. Apparently after learning a java variant called processing, sfu teaches the rest of the undergrad courses with unity
  1602. 8:16
  1603. psymin
1604. I told administrator I'm not up with being domestic, am I boned now?
  1605. 8:16
  1606. OTMJohn
1607. it's a tricky thing in general.. Combat is something that's basically there just to break up monotony and make the game feel tense a bit
  1608. 8:16
  1609. Cheeseness
1610. psymin: Nah, you can't dead end yourself in this game aside from dying (that I know of)
  1611. 8:16
  1612. OTMJohn
1613. psymin nope! you actually have to purposely fail that conversation a few times to pass the puzzle
1614. i hate dead ending in adventure games
  1615. 8:16
  1616. psymin
  1617. ahh, whew
  1618. 8:17
  1619. Cheeseness
1620. psymin: In fact, that part you're on is where I started talking about the restrictions placed on the player mirroring the restrictions that Arid has
1621. In an adventure game context, you'd think that "boned" would be a good thing. I can't think of a single time where I've come across a bone that wasn't useful
  1622. 8:17
  1623. OTMJohn
1624. oh, the conversational stuff, right
1625. I'd like to play with that in ep. 2 as well...
  1626. 8:18
  1627. yama_
1628. Like using bones to push buttons?
  1629. 8:18
  1630. Cheeseness
1631. Monkey Island 2's jail scene springs to mind
  1632. 8:18
  1633. OTMJohn
1634. haha sorry no, mirroring player challenges with the character's challenges
  1635. 8:18
  1636. yama_
  1637.
  1638. 8:18
  1639. Cheeseness
1640. I'm interested to see what Arid ends up valuing in part 2 - what an individual values says a lot about who they are. At this point, Arid values nothing but the safety of her pilot
  1641. 8:19
  1642. OTMJohn
  1643. yeah
  1644. yeah we've got a few options
  1645. gotta construct somethingggg
  1646. 8:19
  1647. Cheeseness
1648. If Arid is in part 2 (ooooh, was that a spoiler? Or misdirection? \o/)
  1649. 8:19
  1650. yama_
1651. Was there any indication of the pilot's gender in the game so far? (Sorry, I'm bad at paying attention sometimes.)
  1652. 8:20
  1653. Cheeseness
1654. I need to get the strings off you at some point, John
  1655. 8:20
  1656. OTMJohn
  1657. Strings?
  1658. 8:20
  1659. Cheeseness
1660. I keep wanting to say there's not, but I'm not 100% certain
  1661. 8:20
  1662. OTMJohn
1663. yeah I thinkkk we mentioned that the gender is male, but I'm not sure
1664. now that you mention it...
  1665. 8:20
  1666. Cheeseness
1667. If there is, it's only once
  1668. 8:20
  1669. OTMJohn
  1670. yeah
  1671. 8:21
  1672. OTM_Danielle
1673. The pilot is mentioned as a he.
  1674. 8:21
  1675. yama_
  1676. Ah-ha.
  1677. 8:21
  1678. Cheeseness
1679. And I keep forgetting to look when I'm testing
  1680. 8:21
  1681. OTM_Danielle
  1682. I think so.
1683. but I've seen the game through so many times, it's hard to remember
  1684. 8:21
  1685. OTMJohn
  1686. yeah
  1687. 8:21
  1688. OTM_Danielle
1689. definitely later he is mentioned as 'Josephs'
  1690. 8:21
  1691. Mimness
1692. I always just assumed Josephs was a masculine name. Which is stupid, really.
  1693. 8:21
  1694. Cheeseness
  1695. Well, it's the character's last name, I assume
  1696. 8:21
  1697. OTMJohn
1698. yeah it's the last name
1699. but we did have the intention that he's male
1700. if it's not written in stone in ep1 it could change???? but probably not
  1701. 8:22
  1702. yama_
  1703. Okies.
  1704. 8:22
  1705. Cheeseness
1706. If it's ambiguous in the work, that's kinda cool
1707. We'll have to look out for it during the next session
  1708. 8:22
  1709. OTMJohn
  1710. haha yeah
  1711. 8:22
  1712. yama_
1713. I'll probably not be able to make it to the next session. *sad*
  1714. 8:22
  1715. OTMJohn
  1716.
  1717. 8:23
  1718. Mimness
1719. It was probably a combination of things that just made me assume her pilot was male - Josephs making me think of the male name Joseph, the masculine suit, etc
  1720. 8:23
  1721. Cheeseness
  1722. Aww, yama_
  1723. 8:23
  1724. OTMJohn
  1725. right yeah
  1726. 8:23
  1727. yama_
1728. I'll just have to play the game myself and read the chat lot at a later date.
  1729. 8:23
  1730. OTMJohn
1731. and the other ARID has a female pilot
  1732. 8:23
  1733. Mimness
1734. yama_: Yes yes! Play the game!
  1735. 8:23
  1736. yama_
  1737. lot = log
  1738. 8:24
  1739. medacris
1740. Awh, yama, do you want us to keep you up to date with what happens?
  1741. 8:24
  1742. Mimness
1743. OTMJohn: Really? Does the sad dude whose power core she nicks have a female pilot?
  1744. 8:24
  1745. yama_
1746. medacris, naw, but thanks for asking.
  1747. 8:24
  1748. OTMJohn
  1749. yeah!
  1750. 8:25
  1751. Mimness
1752. How did I miss that! My mind is blown. I'm doing a PhD in gender studies at the moment. I should quit.
  1753. 8:25
  1754. medacris
1755. And aw, The Fall doesn't have a TVTropes page yet. Just one on the band, TV show, and film of the same name. Gotta make a page for that and Crypt of The Necrodancer.
  1756. 8:25
  1757. Cheeseness
1758. The other suit doesn't mention that its pilot was female does it?
  1759. 8:25
  1760. medacris
1761. Nah, s'okay, Mim. And yeah, but briefly, Cheese.
  1762. 8:25
  1763. OTMJohn
1764. haha you flatter us Mimness
1765. TVTropes? i'll have to look into it
  1766. yeah it does!
  1767. 8:26
  1768. Cheeseness
  1769. Ah, OK
  1770. 8:26
  1771. OTMJohn
1772. my pilot has been unresponsive gor 10 hours (or what ever) -- she is dead
  1773. 8:26
  1774. Cheeseness
1775. Note to self: pay more attnetion
  1776. And speel more bettr
  1777. 8:26
  1778. liorean
1779. TV Tropes, destroyer of lives... or at least, eater of time
  1780. 8:26
  1781. OTMJohn
  1782. haha
  1783. 8:26
  1784. Cheeseness
1785. Yeah, now that you mention it
  1786. 8:26
  1787. OTMJohn
1788. Mimness - we tried to do some interesting stuff with gender actually, but we weren't sure how it was going to be recieved
  1789. 8:26
  1790. Mimness
1791. Ohhhhhhhh yeah. I was paying more attention to the somewhat flippant way he says that line. Very unemotional compared to how passionate ARID is about her pilot.
  1792. 8:27
  1793. yama_
1794. Wasn't it like 25 minutes or something? Made me feel sad hearing it that it had happened such a short while ago.
  1795. 8:27
  1796. Cheeseness
  1797. Yeah
  1798. 8:27
  1799. medacris
1800. TVTropes is great for introducing people to new shows, movies, games, etc.
  1801. 8:27
  1802. Mimness
1803. OTMJohn: Well it was well received in this house ^_^
  1804. 8:27
  1805. medacris
1806. Mim, I think it was cool that they were written as contrasts.
  1807. 8:27
  1808. kisak
1809. OTMJohn: unresponsive for 10 hours, and has been flailed about constantly for the last 9 hours, no chance of neck / spine / internal bleeding, right?
  1810. 8:27
  1811. liorean
1812. Yes, but it's also a great way to lose 3-4 hours you really didn't intend to
  1813. 8:27
  1814. medacris
  1815. @liorean: True.
  1816. 8:28
  1817. Permafry_42
1818. i like TVTropes because without it homestuck probably wouldn't exist, or would be a very different webcomic
  1819. 8:28
  1820. OTMJohn
  1821. hahah kisak, interesting point
  1822. maybe
  1823. 8:28
  1824. psymin
  1825. is administrator Cyril?
  1826. 8:29
  1827. Mimness
1828. I agree medacris, I agree. It made me feel that ARID was unique.
  1829. 8:29
  1830. Cheeseness
1831. Does someone usually continue to bleed after 10 hours?
  1832. 8:29
  1833. liorean
1834. I like TVTropes because I don't think any resource like it ever existed in offline format
  1835. 8:29
  1836. Cheeseness
1837. I suppose that would depend on how recently it was strung up on the cross maybe?
  1838. 8:29
  1839. OTMJohn
  1840. yeah, I don't think it's 10 hours
1841. it might evben be in the minutes
1842. we chatted about that when we wrote the line
  1843. but now I don't remember
  1844. 8:30
  1845. kisak
1846. the timeframe of the other combat system implied that the timeframe was minimal
1847. less than an hour maybe?
  1848. 8:31
  1849. OTMJohn
1850. it might ebven be 20 minutes
