  106. Bio: Ria Sharp. Great-granddaughter of Valory Sharp, noted pathfinder and lawbringer, whose work taming the frontier of Ersht is the stuff of family legend. Second child and only daughter of one Alicia Sharp, decorated veteran of the Ersht Air Crops, who served with distinction during the War of Annihilation. Born on a ranch in western Ersht, the girl seemed as apt to follow in her mother's footsteps as her older brother did to tending the family homestead. Certainly, there was more than a fair bit of truth to her mother's claims that Ria learned to ride before she walked, and took to flying a good deal faster than most fledglings. As soon as the girl learned to saddle her own horse, she spent most of her remaining childhood dodging chores, soaring far and wide over the plains and mountains of western Ersht; as far as she could get within a couple of days, anyway. Attempts to discipline her and keep her on the ground seemed only to encourage her, spurring longer and longer journeys. Until the day of her sixteenth birthday, when the girl packed her bags and left home for good, family shaking their heads as they watched her fly off into the sunrise.
  107.
  108. That Ria would chose to make her way east, stopping in at the first recruitment office in the first major city she found, was only a partial surprise. Tough though military life might be, the young flier figured that the chance at adventure and glory was enough to inspire her to jump at the opportunity. All it would take was a month or two of training, a few opportunities to show her stuff, and she'd get the action she craved.
  109.
  110. Unfortunately for her, there was no such luck. Though she proved herself a damned good pegasus rider in training--winning a number of commendations for her flying and her skill with a lance, nigh equaling the speed with which she managed to receive reprimands for her inability to follow proper protocol--she never got much chance for more. With the lack of open warfare, she was left to be assigned to a small coastal garrison, the best she could hope for was a chance to rescue the odd fisherman from the storm, or scare off a dinghy full of pirates before they thought of attacking some backwater village. All while under the watchful eye of an old, by-the-book commander. It was, for her, a sort of hell.
  111. One which some might have hoped would teach her proper discipline.
  112.
  113. No such luck, of course. Eventually, even with her obvious skill, it was too much for her superiors to bear. Ria was drummed out of the Air Corps for insubordination.
  114.
  115. But, for her, it was a mixed blessing. Insulting as being thrown out on her rear was, it gave her a new opportunity, and just enough coin to charter a room and stabling on a ship bound for Sivult where her behavior might be overlooked in favor of her talent. And where there were many, many more opportunities for interesting work, ranging far over the hostile interior of Govitz to gather intelligence.
  116.
  117. This time, the chance paid off. And with a couple of years, she amassed more than a fair share of experience, coin, and praise from her employers. Praise which, along with the maps and information she'd gathered, made its way back through covert channels to her own homeland and to the ears of certain officers.
