Three years later...
The Ponyville tragedy of 821PD was the single greatest loss of life and property damage in Equestrian history. The horrors inflicted upon Equestria by the mad draqonequus Discord which culminated in an attempt to stop him by the Elements of Harmony finally ended that same day with a Battle of the Gods. Due to the scale of the battle, the magical fallout which resulted spread all over the country and poisoned the lands  it had come in contact with. The hardest hit was Canterlot, which had to be evacuated and the rural Equestrian West and North west which provided most of the country's food.
For the past few years, the monarchs and the Equestrian court has decided to settle in the Castle of the Pony sisters in the deep Everfree, as a temporary capital while the Canterlot region is being cleansed of the magical poisoning.
The Everfree forest and lands above the Mild West desert where the temporary capital is placed is particularly harsh and filled with creatures ready to tear the new comers apart. And where an army set to destroy Equestria regularly matches steel with the ponies.
