Conditionals (Units 21-24)

If ... , then ... .

Present Real Conditionals (21)
If I drink too much coffee, I have trouble sleeping.
= Sometimes this really happens.
If you heat water above 100C, it boils.

Future Real Conditionals (22)
If I drink too much coffee tonight, I will have trouble sleeping.
= Maybe this will really happen in the future.

Present and Future Unreal Conditionals (23)
If I had children now, I would try to save more money.
= I don't have children, so I don't save very much money.
If it snowed tomorrow, I would be very surprised.
= I don't believe it will snow tomorrow.

Past Unreal Conditionals (24)
If I had drunk too much coffee last night, I would have had trouble sleeping.
= I didn't drink too much coffee, so I didn't have trouble sleeping.

- Present real conditionals have both clauses in a present tense. Progressive, simple, modal, imperatives are all fine.
Imperative = instructions or command
If you don't like the product, return it.

If you like movies, you should watch movies in English.
If you don't have much money, you should take the bus.

"Even if" = the result is surprising
Even if he drinks a lot of coffee, he can sleep with no problem.

Return the product if you don't like it. (no comma)
You should take the bus if you don't have much money.

I can't sleep when I drink too much coffee.
= I can't sleep if I drink too much coffee.
