- Strange
- Over 1,000 Signatures On Petition Calling For Alabama Attorney General To
- Investigate American Legislative Exchange Council
- A petition signed by over 1,000 people calling on Alabama Attorney General
- Luther Strange to investigate the American Legislative Exchange Council’s (ALEC) tax status and its compliance with Alabama’s lobbying laws.
- ALEC has been at the center of a national controversy over laws it has promoted
- such as “Stand Your Ground” legislation.
- According to Teamster Nation, “Corporations that have publicly cut ties to ALEC
- in recent weeks include, Scantron Corporation, Kaplan Higher Education, Procter
- & Gamble, YUM! Brands, Blue Cross Blue Shield, American Traffic Solutions, Reed
- Elsevier, Arizona Public Service, Mars, Wendy's, McDonald's, Intuit, Kraft
- Foods, PepsiCo, and Coca-Cola. The addition of Amazon.com brings the total to
- 16. Four non-profits -- Lumina Foundation for Education, the National
- Association of Charter School Authorizers (NACSA), the National Board for
- Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), and the Gates Foundation -- and 54
- state legislators have also cut ties with ALEC.”
- Common Cause President Bob Edgar, whose organization has filed an Internal
- Revenue Service Whistleblower Complaint against ALEC, has said, “ALEC is a
- corporate lobby front group masquerading as a public charity.” The idea for
- this petition came from the Common Cause campaign to ask state attorney generals
- to investigate ALEC.
- The petition will remain active and will be delivered online to Attorney General
- Strange’s office after this physical delivery. Please link any coverage to the
- petition.
