  1. In September 12, 1994, Apple announced OS 7.5. However, it's product are in great danger when another operating system we know came out: Windows 95. Orginally in 1992 as Windows Chicago, it was a heck of a beast. It was amazing. The design was amazing. The look of it was amazing. Everyone who owned a PC wanted to have it. In the first year, over 40 million copies were sold. Let's have a brief look of Windows 95. It's basically like your modern PC, because it included the taskbar, your clock on the right, and a button with the Windows logo and start. If you click it, a box appears with serveral task you can open, such as Programs, Documents, Settings, Find, Help, Run, and Shut Down. Those were the common task for Windows 95, and can still be found function today in Windows Vista, the last version to use the Classic Start Menu. You can still access DOS via the MS-DOS Prompt. Due to the success of Windows 95, Microsoft planned to make another operating system to replace Windows 95. And they did. Meanwhile in 1996, Microsoft was focused on Windows NT 4.0. The NT line was supposed to be for business, but soon, it was for consumers. In fact, you could be even using a NT operating system. So, it was like this: Windows NT 4.0 was released on July 29, 1996, but it wasn't that popular. In fact, earlier version of Windows NT had the same problem, and it could either be because it was for business user back than. Even since the fifth generation had started, it was like a total monster. Many companies decide to skip 32-bit and go to 64-bit. Nintendo was one of them, with the Nintendo 64, released in September 29, 1996. It was well praised unlike the Atari Jaguar, which failed in the market. But the best thing about it, was that it shipped with Super Mario 64. Here the storyline. Mario was going to Peach for cake until Bowser came in and stole the princess. The only way to save her is by power stars. Once you collected 60 power star, you now have to defeat Bowser. Once you did, you got the cake! Nevermind. The cake is a lie. It was more sucessful than Super Mario Bros. but with Super Mario World in the market, it didn't overpass Super Mario World. Apple was ready to fail. With nothing to overun Windows 95, the Macintosh was in jeopardy. However, on December 20, 1996, Apple had brought NeXT, which was owned by Steve Jobs. Now back at Apple, Steve Jobs took some dramatic actions. First, he discontinued the Apple Pippin, because he felt it was a commerical failure. Next, he stopped Apple developers from using OS 7.x and start working on future version. With that announcement, Apple had released OS 8.0 in July 26, 1997. Now, Apple was getting back on their feet. On August 15, 1998, Apple had released the iMac. However, it was in total danger with the release of another Windows operating system: Windows 98, released on June 25, 1998. It was like Windows 95, but with a few features, such as the quick launch bar besides the taskbar. This feature is still being used today in future versions. Once Windows 98 was released, the operating system market exploded twice again. Now, more user are now using Windows 98 now, and some of them are even using Windows 98 this day. On November 18, 1998, Nintendo released a minor console named the Game Boy Color for the fifth generations of handheld consoles. With over 118.69 million units sold worldwide, it was more successful in the US market and the Japanese market. Meanwqhile, My Little Pony had reached the 2nd generation. However it was not popular and died quickly. On May 1999, Nintendo said they were making another console, codenamed "Project Dolphin". Soon, OS 9.0 was released on October 23, 1999, and it was the best internet operating system. On February 17, 2000, Windows 2000 was released. It would be the most secure operating system, with the exception of the strongest viruses, Nimda and Code Red. However, because it was "still" for business, it wasn't popular either. Despite this, over 1 million copies were sold. On August 24, 2000, "Project Dolphin" was renamed to Nintendo Gamecube, and is planning to launch very soon. On September 14, 2000, Microsoft made something that would be a nightmare to Microsoft. It was Windows Millennium Edition, or Windows ME for short. Despite the new feature included for home user, the popularity of this operating system sucked, probably due to removal of Real-mod MS-DOS. Everyone regretted using Windows ever again. Windows ME was dubbed the "Mistake Edition". Over 1 million user quit using Windows and instead started using a new kind of Mac OS: OS X Public Beta. It was starting to get really good nowm with the new dock, and the new design of the Windows. It would be released as OS X 10.0 "Cheetah" in March 24, 2001. Soon, Microsoft announced Xbox, to overthown Playstation 2. Nintendo was planning to release the Gamecube during the 2001 holiday season, alongside with Xbox. Apple was now getting back to the comsumer market with the release of OS 10.1 "Puma". And Windows ME had failed for Microsoft. But it was meant for a stopgap release between Windows 98, and the new operating system Microsoft was working on since 1999: Windows XP.
