  6.
  7. Marco woke up and finally put his finger on the feeling that had been growing inside him for months. Discord. A mismatch between him and the rest of the world. Not that the world was strange, or really that he was different from everything else. Just that something was...off.
  8.
  9. He went through the motions, getting dressed and ready for school, made the bus with Star and arriving in time to greet Jackie in the schoolyard. The sight of the skater girl gliding in on her board, so carefree and confident and casually feminine, had him flush with awe and admiration, just as it had for the last ten years.
  10.
  11. He watched as her form disappeared around a corner, his heart swelled and yearning. But not quite in the same way as it had for the last ten years.
  12.
  13. "-arco? Marco!" Star crooned, waving her hand in front of Marco's face. "You alright there, buddy?"
  14.
  15. "Huh? Oh, yeah, of course! Why'd you ask?"
  16.
  17. "You're looking awfully distracted by Jackie. But you're not flushed and awkwardly breathing like usual."
  18.
  19. "I just-, I don't know, Star. I'm just not feeling myself today, I guess."
  20.
  21. "Oh, Marco. Of course you're feeling like yourself! You're you! It's not like you can feel like somebody else or something."
  22.
  23. "I guess you're right," he smiled.
  24.
  25. "...Unless you're a changeling or something!" Star grabbed him by the front of his hoodie had pressed her nose against his, grinning through her mock anger. "What have you done with the real Marco?!"
  26.
  27. "Har har!" Marco said, removing Star's slight hands from his chest and adjusting his clothes before following her towards their classroom.
  28.
  29. Walking behind her, he couldn't help but notice her figure. There was nothing perverted in it, he was simply aware of how her body moved. Arms swinging gently, hips rolling with unconscious grace as she strode easily forwards.
  30.
  31. Something about it just seemed...natural. Far more so than his own awkward gait.
  32.
  33. He found himself stumbling slightly and unsure of what to do with his arms. He just felt so heavy and off-balance, his skin sticky and sweaty, and his body odour just made him feel embarrassed. Nothing at all like the sweet scent drifting from his best friend in the hot morning air.
  34.
  35. Maybe it was puberty catching up on him. He knew his body was undergoing a lot of changes. But did it always feel so...wrong?

  40.
  41. Marco sat through class listlessly, his work as good as ever, but lacking the flair and efficiency he was known for. Instead he found his gaze again drawn to Star. Hunched over, holding her pencil tight in her fist, scrawling at the page and kicking her feet under her desk. Honestly, she'd have looked right at home in a kindergarten class, never mind 9th grade.
  42.
  43. But even so, he couldn't help but think about how nice her seafoam green dress looked on her. On a hot day like this, the airflow and looseness must have made it so much more bearable.
  44.
  45. Not to mention it just looked so comfortable.
  46.
  47. Liberating.
  48.
  49. The other girls as well: Hope and Janna in their skirts, Sabrina and Chantelle in their cheerleader outfits, even Jackie in her short jean shorts. It was just so easy to be distracted by all these girls in cute clothes around him, making him so jealous-.
  50.
  51. ...Jealous?
  52.
  53. "Marco Diaz!" Ms Skullnick called from the front of the room. "The other students have already left for recess."
  54.
  55. Did he seriously miss the entire class just daydreaming?!
  56.
  57. "Sorry, Ms Skullnick, I'll be going now." he said, packing his things and heading for the door.
  58.
  59. "Hold on a sec, kid," the teacher turned troll stopped him at the door, and he turned to face her. "I've spent enough of my life not happy with the way life works to recognize someone in the same boat. What's eating you?"
  60.
  61. Marco floundered for a minute, trying to pull his thoughts together before answering. "You, uh, you weren't happy with life?"
  62.
  63. Skullnick snorted. "Ya think? I'm unmarried, teaching ungrateful brats for a living - no offense - and I got turned into a dammed troll for Pete's sake! Life isn't exactly a basket of roses for me."
  64.
  65. Marco just stood there, not quite sure where to look.
  66.
  67. "But you know what? It took me being turned into a troll to realise there's more to life than what you're doing, or where you are with relationships, or whatever. I mean, I still got to teach you kids, but as a troll I'm basically a young woman again! I'm stronger and faster than I ever was, I can do things now that I never could before, and I have a new lease of life to take everything that's happened to me until now and make it worth something."
  68.
  69. "So...you're happier now?"
  70.
  71. "Happier?" Skullnick paused. "I don't know if I'd say happier. But life's what you make of it, and I feel a lot better about it than I used to. Maybe I am happier?"
  72.
  73. Marco smiled, a kind of peace settling over his mind as her words sunk in. "Well, I'm happy for you, Ms Skullnick, even if you just feel better about things now. Thanks for telling me about all this. I think I feel a bit better as well."
  74.
  75. Skullnick watched as her student left, definitely more like the only kid who ever earned an A-plus-with-a-smiley-face from her.
  76.
  77. "That kid's growing up," she mused. "Heh, who says I'm a bad teacher?"

  82.
  83. For the rest of the day, Marco was able to relax. He still found his mind wandering, but not to the extent that it distracted him from his schoolwork or had him missing breaks.
  84.
  85. He hadn't realised just how much he had been resisting those thoughts. Now he had stopped the mental relief was incredible. How long had he been like that? But now he was able to accept them as his own, and process them rationally.
  86.
  87. He let his thoughts go back to his time at St O's, busting out Flying Princess Pony Head. The pink dress he had worn as a disguise floated into his mind.
  88.
  89. After his initial surprise, it had actually been very comfortable. The tent was roomy enough that he could move well in it without worrying about tripping. Trust Star to think practically, he thought. And there was just something about it, the layers and ruffles and laces and his soft ponytail against his skin.
  90.
  91. The freedom of feeling...
  92.
  93. Pretty.
  94.
  95. There was a word he didn't expect to use thinking about himself.
  96.
  97. He resisted the urge to stop thinking about it.
  98.
  99. It was true, he admitted to himself. He did feel pretty back then. And it had felt good.
  100.
  101. In fact, it felt right. Natural.
  102.
  103. There's nothing wrong with anything that makes you feel good about yourself, right? He wasn't hurting anybody or anything.
  104.
  105. So it's okay for him to enjoy feeling pretty.
  106.
  107. "Hey Marco, you're looking pretty-"
  108.
  109. "Uwah!" He jumped as somebody had read his thoughts, voice cracking.
  110.
  111. "-Uh, pretty distracted. Actually, you've been looking out of it all day. Are you alright?"
  112.
  113. Marco steadied his breathing as he looked into Star's light frown.
  114.
  115. "Yeah, I'm fine. I'm actually feeling a lot better no. Ms Skullnick gave me some good advice."
  116.
  117. "Wow, she can teach you about math problems AND life problems!"
  118.
  119. "Heh, yeah. You know she's actually happier now as a troll than when when she was human?"
  120.
  121. "Why wouldn't she be? If I were a troll, I could do whatever I wanted. There are no troll kingdoms, so I wouldn't have to be queen, I could bash anyone's head in I wanted, 'cos they wouldn't be able to get me back, and just think of all the fun I could have with a few hundred years more to live!"
  122.
  123. "So why haven't you turned yourself into a troll already?"
  124.
  125. "Duh! I wouldn't be able to use my magic! And besides, that shade of green really isn't my color." She smirked.
  126.
  127. "Hmm. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad after all..."
  128.
  129. "Whoa whoa, Marco, wait up a second! You want to be a troll?! Why? Why didn't you tell me?"
  130.
  131. "No! Star, I don't want to be a troll!"
  132.
  133. "-and it'll mess up your center of mass so fighting would be harder and- Oh, thank goodness! I didn't want to be best friends with a troll!"
  134.
  135. "Thanks for nothin' kid." Skullnick grumbled as she passed.
  136.
  137. "So, if I were to change...you wouldn't want to be friends anymore?"
  138.
  139. "What?! No! Marco, I like you because you're you, no matter what you look like. Even if you wanted to be a troll."
  140.
  141. Marco let out a sigh he didn't realise he was holding. "Thanks, Star."
  142.
  143. They shared a smile.
  144.
  145. "So, if you don't want to be a troll, what do you want to be?"
  146.
  147. "Uh, what?!"
  148.
  149. "Oh come on, you said Skullnick gave you some advice, and then said she was happier as a troll. So?"
  150.
  151. "That's not what we were talking about! That was, tangential, to what we were talking about. Yeah."
  152.
  153. "Alright, never mind, Marco, it's fine."
  154.
  155. But he could see her huffing about it.
  156.
  157. "Look, alright, I still beed to figure some things out right now. Can we...talk about it later? Promise."
  158.
  159. "Okay, Marco, but I'll hold you to that!" she smirked, levelling her wand at him.
  160.
  161. "Sure thing, Star." he smiled, grateful for her understanding.
