  76.
  77. rin "The desk sounds different. It's like the sounds are coming from another world or something. Maybe they are."
  78.
  79. hi "No, I think it's because solid matter transfers sound much better than air. It's amplified."
  80.
  81. hi "That's why the indians listen to the ground for the the buffalos."
  82.
  83. "Rin abruptly sits upright and turns to look at me with a sour look on her face."

  94.
  95. "I don't understand."
  96.
  97. "The teacher arrives, carrying a marble bust of some woman and a vase with red roses on a big wooden tray."
  98.
  99. "He seems to have trouble keeping all of that in balance, so he is striding carefully, which doesn't prevent him from smiling brightly from behind the expressionless bust."
  100.
  101. no "Hello everyone!"
  102.
  103. "How on earth is he always so positive, except when he is giving feedback to us?"
  104.

  106.
  107. no "Today we are going to draw still life. Form two groups and gather around one of these objects."
  108.
  109. no "Practice perspective, shading and proportion."

  112.
  113. "The club members quickly shuffle their chairs around the classroom to get closer to either the vase or the bust."
  114.
  115. "We, or rather I, choose the vase and set to work."
  116.
  117. "…"
  118.
  119. "Well, half of us."
  120.
  121. "Rin is ignoring Nomiya's assignment just like she is suddenly ignoring me."
  122.
  123. "She is doodling something idly with her foot, not even looking at what she is drawing."
  124.
  125. "I try to catch her eyes, but she is looking out of the window."
  126.
  127. "…"
  128.
  129. "Rin's presence is making me uneasy."
  130.
  131. "She looks almost like she is asleep, leaning back against the chair with her legs resting easily on the desk, now completely given up on the drawing."
  132.
  133. "I don't think that she is acting any different than usual, but after what happened last week…"
  134.
  135. "The more I try to relax and just be myself, the more it feels that something is wrong."
  136.
  137. "I feel that there should be… something, but there is nothing."
  138.
  139. rin "What's that word for when you think that you have forgotten something special and you know that if you knew where to start from you'd know how to track the lost thing through your mind?"
  140.
  141. "While her conversation-opener is just as nonsensical as usual, it makes me wonder what her habit of asking other people about words means."
  142.
  143. hi "I don't think there is a word for that… or at least I don't know one."
  144.
  145. rin "What about the one for when you are thinking only about one person all the time and nothing else and it makes your stomach hurt and there are stars and possibly even moons in your eyes."
  146.
  147. hi "Lovesick, maybe?"
  148.
  149. "Rin furrows her brows and humphs at my answer."
  150.
  151. rin "Why is it so negative? Why sick?"
  152.
  153. hi "Damn, I am no etymologist. Why are you asking me this?"
  154.
  155. "She takes my outburst without as much as a blink of an eye, cooling my temper instantly, and stupidly enough, compelling me to think about the matter even though I don't care about it at all."
  156.
  157. hi "I don't know, probably because of unrequited love and stuff like that. You know."
  158.
  159. rin "I don't know."
  160.
  161. hi "Uhh… you are not making this easy. Well, I guess that love can be a negative power as well as a positive one or something… damn that sounded cheesy."
  162.
  163. hi "Errr, it makes your brain go all awry. You can't think straight so it's like you are a bit ill… damned if I know."
  164.
  165. "This is so awkward. I stammer with my words and the topic makes me uncomfortable in other ways too. I hope I am not blushing."
  166.
  167. "Rin is her usual calm self, not apparently seeing anything problematic with the situation, which leaves me wondering…"
  168.
  169. "Are we talking about us two specifically, or more generally?"
  170.
  171. "And love… just a few days ago it was just friends."
  172.
  173. "Or is she just playing with me? I can't imagine Rin would do anything like that."
  174.
  175. "Aah, it's driving me crazy."
  176.
  177. "I realize that once again, I have all but given up on actually working on the teacher's assignment in favour of prattling with Rin."
  178.
  179. "I glance at Nomiya, who is shooting disapproving glances at us because clearly neither of us is doing what we are supposed to do."
  180.
  181. hi "Are you going to tell the teacher?"
  182.
  183. rin "You think he doesn't know what a lovesick is?"
  184.
  185. rin "Then again, he looks like he might not know. You could have a point"
  186.
  187. "Rin's flexibility at moving from one conversation topic to another is strangely lost when someone else initiates the change of direction."
  188.
  189. "Maybe she has a true one-tracked mind. Can't think of anything but one thing at a time, and when it changes, she forgets about the previous one."
  190.
  191. hi "Not that, about your decision to try getting your paintings on show."
  192.
  193. rin "Oh. I think so."
  194.
  195. "True enough, as the rest of the art class files out of the room, Rin and I stay behind."
  196.
  197. rin "Teach."
  198.
  199. rin "I will do it."
  200.
  201. "Nomiya, who was humming to himself while sorting the pencils, turns around with a mixed expression of friendliness and incomprehension on his face."
  202.
  203. no "Hmm? I'm not sure if I follow you."
  204.
  205. rin "The gallery person. I can talk with that person. At least yesterday I thought I could."
  206.
  207. rin "And today too."
  208.
  209. rin "I think."
  210.
  211. "Nomiya looks over Rin's shoulders at me with a wide smile on his face, but I can only shrug out of modesty."
  212.
  213. "He turns back to Rin, positively beaming."
  214.
  215. no "Oh, wonderful! I had almost lost hope!"
  216.
  217. no "You are such a hardheaded girl, you are! But I knew that sooner or later you'd understand as well!"
  218.
  219. no "I will call to my good friend Saionji and arrange a meeting."
  220.
  221. no "You will need to show your work to her so she can estimate it."
  222.
  223. "Nomiya is talking more to himself than to us and walking in circles around his desk, all the while waving his hands around wildly."
  224.
  225. no "You have the paintings in your room, right?"
  226.
  227. rin "No, but I know where to find them."
  228.
  229. no "You should collect some kind of a portfolio to show to Sae."
  230.
  231. rin "Tomorrow."
  232.
  233. "Rin's nonchalantness is a striking foil to Nomiya's over the top enthusiasm, but neither seems to mind the other."
  234.
  235. no "Very good, very good indeed."
  236.
  237. no "If she accepts you, we can pick the pieces for the actual exhibit together."
  238.
  239. no "Let's hope that she will be as enchanted by your talent as all are."
  240.
  241. no "Not to get your hopes too high, but I'm sure she'll like them. I have known her for a long time and we are good friends."
  242.
  243. no "Well then, I shall go downstairs and make the call. Have a nice day, both of you!"
  244.
  245. "He bustles out of the room and disappears into the hallway."

  435.
  436. rin "Sometimes… I see or hear or think or speak or remember or dream things that feel like they could be important."
  437.
  438. rin "Then I paint."
  439.
  440. "She is still leaving the critical part off. The transformation from idea to art, what is that process?"
  441.
  442. "I don't understand."
  443.
  444. "Maybe stuff like this is not something that can be rationally understood."
  445.
  446. "Rin's paintings are so… odd, dreamlike… damn, I can't even come up with a good adjective to describe them."
  447.
  448. "They must be some of the strangest pictures I have seen like… ever, but even so, many of them are very beautiful."
  449.
  450. hi "So you paint dreams, huh?"
  451.
  452. rin "If I feel like it."

  459.
  460. hi "I don't think there is a single word for that… but isn't that sort of like that old philosophy riddle?"
  461.
  462. hi "You know, are you a butterfly dreaming of being Rin who is painting a dream of being the butterfly, or vice versa?"
  463.
  464. "Rin furrows her brow for a moment, but then her expression relaxes to its usual pokerface."
  465.

  467.
  468. "I feel a smug satisfaction for getting back at Rin for all the confusion her usual banter causes to me."
  469.
  470. rin "I've never dreamt that I'm a butterfly. I was a frog once, though."
  471.

  473.
  474. rin "That was the last time I let Emi sleep in my bed, no matter how much she complains about being cold."
  475.
  476. "The idea of Emi pulling Rin's hair in her sleep somehow transferring inside her dreams gives me a laugh, making Rin look at me like I suddenly went crazy."
  477.
  478. "I wave it away, and she turns back to her paintings."

  483.
  484. hi "What's up with these? Are they unfinished?"
  485.
  486. rin "Kind of, like a slice of toast you eat only halfway and then forget somewhere."
  487.
  488. hi "Lost the inspiration?"
  489.
  490. rin "Yeah. And then I couldn't find it from anywhere."
  491.
  492. rin "I can't even remember what I was trying to do. This one was something about upside down, or raspberry jam."
  493.
  494. rin "One or the other, I can't remember."
  495.
  496. hi "Too bad. I like these two."

  501.
  502. "She moves both of them to the right side pile and the moves to contemplate the next painting in the thinning original pile."
  503.
  504. "Rin is bothering me again, although she obviously doesn't realize it."
  505.
  506. "She is acting like nothing of significance happened last week."
  507.
  508. "The first kiss was understandable in a way… she was not clear in the head, not that she ever is, but…"
  509.
  510. "Maybe I am putting too much significance on a thing like that. It's just that…ah, I don't know."
  511.
  512. "This kind of thing is not something I can say I am good at."
  513.
  514. "The last painting in the original pile is sorted to the left side, leaving us with two new piles."
  515.
  516. "Without prompting, I pick up the approved pile and look at Rin questioningly."
  517.
  518. rin "Just put them anywhere."
  519.
  520. "I lay the pile on top of one of the desks and then pick up the other pile, taking it to a corner of the room that Rin shows me, which she is using as a storage."
  521.
  522. "I still feel that this is not the best place in the world to store one's paintings, but who am I to argue with Rin?"
  523.
  524. "She seems to be immune to logical arguments."
  525.
  526. "With the portfolio chosen, we walk downstairs out to the quad."
  527.
  528. "We walk the cherry tree lined path down to the dorms in silent agreement."
  529.
  530. "I know I have to do some homework, the end of trimester is coming soon, along with exams, but I have no idea what Rin is going to do."
  531.
  532. "She doesn't feel like the type who would study a lot."
  533.
  534. "As we reach the girls' dormitory, which unfairly is closer to the school and the hall than the boys', Rin stops in her tracks."
  535.
  536. "I turn to see why, but she just stands there, studying me with her eyes."
  537.
  538. rin "Will you come to see the gallery person tomorrow?"
  539.
  540. "Huh… I didn't think that I'd go. It's Rin's and the teacher's meeting after all."
  541.
  542. hi "If it's fine with you."
  543.

  609.

  611.
  612. "We turn around to see Rin just had stopped at the previous street corner, staring at the window of a home electronics store."

  699.
  700. sa "I'm rather proud of my newest find, he is a young artist as well, not as young as you are… but very promising."

  705.
  706. "I follow her to the furthest corner of the gallery and flop the portfolio on the big table standing there."

  727.
  728. "It is probably for the best."
  729.

  791.
  792. no "Just lovely, aren't they?"

  827.
  828. "Good luck with that, although her skill at ignoring Rin's irrelevancies is greater than what mine was during the first few times I talked to Rin."
  829.
  830. "Maybe the teacher has warned her beforehand."
  831.
  832. sa "Are these all of your works? Or do you have more back at your school?"

  869.
  870. sa "Very well, let me suggest this: I can rent you gallery space for an exhibit of your own."
  871.
  872. sa "It'll probably have to be only a part of this place, unless you can provide enough works for the entire space."
  873.
  874. sa "As for the rental fee for gallery space, I'm certain that you don't have that kind of money, so would you agree on me “buying” lets say, two of your paintings for my own collection and covering the rent with that?"
  875.
  876. sa "As an gesture of goodwill, I'll pay you generously for them."
  877.

  899.
  900. sa "Oh I'm terribly sorry! Please forgive my rudeness, I completely forgot."
  901.
  902. rin "Don't mind."
  903.

  907.
  908. sa "Yes, I would also have a suggestion regarding those…"
  909.
  910. "The gallerist and the teacher start negotiating about dates and fees between themselves, so I take the opportunity to take a look at the main gallery room."
  911.
  912. "The paintings are pretty, and somehow much easier to appreciate than Rin's, even though I think I might prefer hers now that I've gotten used to her."
  913.
  914. "I am glad that Rin's meeting went so smoothly, despite her odd behaviour and my blunder."
  915.
  916. "I guess the teacher being friends with the gallerist was a big help."
  917.
  918. "The business talks are quickly over, and Nomiya leads us out of the gallery to the street."
  919.
  920. "The hot summery town and bright sunlight seem to fit my mood perfectly."
  921.
  922. "The teacher too seems to be in very jolly spirits, actually much more so than Rin herself."
  923.
  924. "She is walking a few steps behind us like on the way here, contemplating something by herself."
  925.
  926. "Nomiya is blabbering about something about wonderful and amazing that I'm not listening to, just responding with nods and unintelligible mumbling at appropriate places."
  927.
  928. "When he finishes, I slow down my steps so that Rin catches up with me."
  929.

  1059.
1060. "Rin is leaning against the doorjamb, as if her legs had great trouble keeping her standing up."
  1061.

  1081.
1082. "Rin's inherent impoliteness ticks me off."

  1085.
1086. "This is not the time to start wallowing in that issue, though."

  1103.
1104. rin "What time is it?"

1108. "My news makes Rin furrow her brow and humph in contemplation, not to mention ignoring my suggestion."

  1137.
1138. "She doesn't look happy at all."
  1139.
1140. rin "But I'm tired. Isn't it enough that she is pushing herself for exams?"
  1141.
  1142. hi "That's called friendship, I think."

  1145.
1146. "Rin is obviously not amused."
  1147.
1148. hi "Er, anyway, see you after classes. Is the main building lobby all right?"
  1149.
1150. rin "Is something wrong with it? Well, I guess the stairs are a bit worn, did you know that the fourth step is actually loose and someone has twisted their ankle there but it's still not fixed?"
  1151.
1152. "She suddenly turns halfway around to peer into her room, looking around in search of something."
  1153.
1154. rin "You can answer later. I need to find my brushes now."
  1155.
1156. "Her mind is so obviously somewhere else now, so I think it's better to excuse myself."
  1157.
1158. hi "Ok well, I'll go eat then. I'm starving."
  1159.
  1160. rin "Be careful."
  1161.

  1165.
1166. "Well, I suppose she has a lot on her mind now."
  1167.
1168. "After an uninspiring and lonely lunch I drag my own butt to afternoon class, even though I don't particularly feel like it."
  1169.
1170. "I have to force myself to pay attention, but only because the teacher is saying that today's topic will be on exam."
  1171.
1172. "It's not that I'm too worried about the exams, but I sort of feel obligated to do well after being so long away from school."
  1173.

  1221.
1222. "Rin's eyes are peacefully closed, the long eyelashes throwing thin shadows on her cheeks. Her mouth is slightly open and she is breathing quietly."
  1223.
1224. "The hair that's usually so messy is today even more so, laying in a complete disorder over half of her face and forehead."
  1225.
1226. "Her bag is lying at her feet like a forgotten rag doll, some books and pens fallen out of it all around her seat."
  1227.
1228. "The scene makes me smile for reasons I don't know myself."

1232. "Rin stirs, and I retract my hand on reflex, feeling embarrassed for touching her so casually."
  1233.
1234. "She looks so vulnerable, like any sleeping person. It's impossible not to feel fondness towards her."
  1235.
1236. "I sit on the desktop of whoever is sitting in front of Rin and draw the window slightly open to get some fresh air and, hopefully, wake Rin up without having to resort to cruder methods."
  1237.
1238. "She doesn't wake up, but I really didn't expect her to."
  1239.
1240. "Looking at her makes me sleepy as well. To be honest, I wouldn't mind a quick nap either, but I content myself with leaning against the large window and watching Rin."
  1241.
1242. "The light is slowly melting into her auburn hair, softening Rin's outlines so that she seems to be fading into her surroundings."
  1243.
1244. "The minute twitches of her muscles, her hair swaying in the air current, the even rhythm of her breathing, it all gives a strong impression of a dreaming girl."
  1245.
1246. "Like all sleeping people, Rin looks like she is away from this world."
  1247.
1248. "It reminds me of something else she does, but I am left wondering what it is."
  1249.
1250. "Rin sleeps, wherever her dream country is."
  1251.
1252. "With Rin, it doesn't feel so obvious that she would ever come back. She seems to be so detached from her surroundings even when she is awake…"
  1253.

  1255.
1256. "Rin sometimes looks like that when she is painting."
  1257.
1258. "Her focused expressions give the same feeling of being on the other side of some imaginary gap than looking at her sleeping face."
  1259.
1260. "I feel a pain in my chest."
  1261.
1262. "There is no way I can close that gap, to be on the same level with her."
  1263.
1264. "It hurts, even though I know that it's impossible for any two people two truly understand each other."
  1265.
1266. "But Rin… she is almost literally in another world when she is talking about art, thinking about art or making art."
  1267.
  1268. "It's a world I, or anyone, can't share with her."
  1269.
1270. "I wonder if it's the same thing as sleeping for her. Rin seems to value sleeping a lot, despite her apparent lack of common sense regarding sleep rhythm."
  1271.
  1272. "What to do?"
  1273.
1274. "Rin doesn't show any signs of waking up, so I am faced with the decision to wake her up or wait for her to wake on her own."

  1297.
1298. "Another tear follows the first, and then a third."
  1299.
1300. "A feeling of anxiety overcomes me, petrifying me on the spot."
  1301.
1302. "It's so strange, seeing Rin's face peaceful as she sleeps, at the same time as tears stream down her cheeks, wetting the wooden desktop her rests her head on."
  1303.
1304. "I don't know what to do so I do nothing, just watch the tears roll one by one down her face."
  1305.
1306. "I wonder what she is dreaming of."
  1307.
1308. "With one final stir Rin wakes up, or maybe it is because of the crying."

  1312. rin "Ah."

  1323.
  1324. rin "Ah."
  1325.
1326. "Rin notices the tears and wipes them on the shoulders of her shirt."
  1327.
1328. hi "You cried in your sleep. Was it a bad dream?"
  1329.
1330. "I recall Rin claiming that she has never had one, but I had to ask anyway."

1332. rin "No. This just happens sometimes."
  1333.

1340. rin "Oh. Well, it's after classes now and I am seeing you right here."

  1347.
1348. rin "I was painting all night and then it was morning and I sort of forgot that it would have been a good idea to sleep."
  1349.
1350. "She frowns, just a little, to show that she is not satisfied."
  1351.
1352. rin "I'm going to the 22nd Corner to see the atelier and do something."
  1353.

  1357.
1358. rin "Do you want to come?"
  1359.
1360. "I contemplate for a moment. Rin's invitation is surprising, but it might be just because she stood me up twice today."
  1361.
1362. hi "Nah, I'm fine. I would only be in your way and you have to work hard for the exhibition, right? Some other time."
  1363.
1364. "I can't read Rin reaction from her face. Whether she is relieved, disappointed or something else, she won't show it."
  1365.
1366. rin "Okay. I think I better go now."
  1367.
1368. "I step down on floor as well and stretch my back."

  1847.
1848. hi "So, you try to paint the things that can't be put into words, is that it?"
  1849.
1850. hi "But, if these things can't be explained by anything, then they can't be communicated by art either."
  1851.
1852. "Rin blows a stray strand of auburn hair off her forehead and looks up to the sky visible through the opening in the ceiling."
  1853.
1854. rin "That's the way it is."
  1855.
1856. hi "So what kind of things these qualia are, except colors?"
  1857.
1858. rin "All kinds of things."
  1859.
1860. rin "It's like, everyone in the world has their own idea of a thing, and when you or I say the word for it you never can be sure if the other person is thinking of the same thing."
  1861.
1862. rin "Like, try to explain red, or love."
  1863.
1864. hi "Well, I don't know… love is a feeling of affection, attraction, caring. Stuff like that."
  1865.
1866. "Rin looks doubtful, unimpressed at my meek attempt at explaining a deep concept with a few simple words."
  1867.
  1868. rin "Is that love?"
  1869.
1870. hi "Yeah ok, I understand. The associations and thoughts in my head are different from what I am saying"
  1871.
1872. hi "But you know, by that definition, isn't almost everything in the world like that… qualia?"
  1873.
1874. hi "All words are used to communicate ideas, some ideas just are more universal than others."
  1875.
1876. hi "I don't think I could too accurately explain any given experience I've had to another person."
  1877.
1878. hi "Each person is an individual, you can't get inside someone else's head."
  1879.
1880. hi "It's like that symbols game of yours, everyone associates different things to words."
  1881.
1882. rin "You guessed right once."
  1883.
  1884. hi "I got lucky."
  1885.
1886. "My retort silences Rin. She retreats from the conversation, slipping again away from me."
  1887.
1888. "She doesn't return to painting, just keeps on looking me with that empty poker face of hers."
  1889.
1890. "Why did she choose that word?"
  1891.
1892. "It is not a game she's playing with my head. Rin is not a disingenuous person, of that I am sure."
  1893.
1894. "Maybe it's just my own mind playing tricks."
  1895.
1896. "Love, affection, that kind of thing in the context of Rin have made me feel pretty confused lately."
  1897.
1898. "When did I start having thoughts like this? I can't remember."
  1899.
1900. "Maybe last week was the key."
  1901.
1902. "She is a puzzle, a conundrum, an enigma."
  1903.
1904. "I feel attracted to it, compelled to solve it, the overtly rational part of my brain won't let me give up."
  1905.
1906. "I never would have believed I could be this obsessive about something."
  1907.
1908. "Damn, this side of me reminds me of Rin herself, too."
  1909.
1910. "Then, why do I hesitate and keep running in circles around her?"
  1911.
  1912. "Carpe diem, right?"
  1913.
  1914. hi "Rin."
  1915.
1916. "Saying her name with an intention like this makes my mouth dry, as if my subconscious is fighting against what I'm going to say next."
  1917.
1918. "Rin looks up from her paint-covered toes and stops wriggling them as there now isn't anyone to observe them curiously."
  1919.
1920. "The hard stare of her dark green eyes seems like a portent."
  1921.
  1922. hi "I like you."
  1923.
1924. "The lack of any reaction is like a slap to the face."

  1927.
  1928. rin "What is “more?”"
  1929.
1930. "The slow, hesitant words coming from between her strawberry-colored lips are not the ones I was waiting for. Neither of the two options, actually."
  1931.
1932. "I feel myself blushing heavily, as is the par for course in these kinds of situations."
  1933.
1934. "Still, Rin's faux-innocent inquiry feels like grilling over hot charcoals."

  2440.
2441. "When they are troubled, most people escape their unhappy lives to a world of fantasy."

  2444.
2445. "Rin doesn't look happy but I ignore her. At least she is somewhat cooperative, walking after me first the stairs down and then out to the street."
  2446.
2447. "The night has fallen upon the town."
  2448.
2449. "It is a gentle summer night, less oppressive than those of fall or winter."
  2450.
2451. "The sunlight is replaced by shining neon colours and bland yellow street lights, and the air is easy to breathe."
  2452.
2453. "The feeling of the hot summer day lasts long into the evening and night."
  2454.
  2455. "Now then…"
  2456.
2457. "I grab Rin by her sleeve like I've seen Emi do and to my surprise, she obediently follows."
  2458.
2459. "The pale street lights are fighting against the all-enveloping darkness as we walk, the guide and the guided although neither knows where we are going."
  2460.
  2461. "But it doesn't matter."
  2462.
  2463. "We can't get lost."
  2464.
2465. "This is the one moment where the usual silences that have become a ritual between me and Rin fit perfectly."
  2466.
2467. "We walk side by side, choosing directions by impulse or inspiration, sometimes finding ourselves back at a place we had already seen once or twice."
  2468.
  2469. "Sometimes finding new places."
  2470.
2471. "Rin doesn't ask where we are going. Maybe she doesn't care. Maybe she knows I couldn't answer her."
  2472.
2473. "The silence of the night is not scary, after all the lights drive most of it away."
  2474.
2475. "The air is becoming cooler as the moon progresses along its journey in the cloudless sky."
  2476.
2477. "I buy some hot coffee and snacks from a vending machine and we sit down on a bench to consume them."
  2478.
2479. "There is no time in the night of the town."
  2480.
2481. "Thus we spend an uncounted amount of it just sitting there, observing the stillness of the usually so vivid townscape."
  2482.
2483. "Still, it's getting very late."
  2484.
2485. "Few cars are trickling down the streets and even less people are around."
  2486.
2487. "The apparent lack of nocturnal life is somehow very fitting of this place."
  2488.
2489. "There are around-the clock shops and cafés, sure, but the atmosphere is like the town itself was slumbering."
  2490.
2491. "This town sleeps eight hours a day."
  2492.
2493. "The city, bathing in the electric glow of a million lightbulbs, never slept."
  2494.
2495. "I have seen it, it's not the first time I'm doing this."
  2496.
2497. "It was one of the first times I was left home alone."
  2498.
2499. "Both of my parents had business trips neither could cancel, so they deemed me old enough to survive two days by myself."
  2500.
2501. "Their misplaced trust in me did not go to waste, as I proceeded to spend the entire night out in the city."
  2502.
2503. "Afterwards, I could not say what made me stay in downtown longer than I intended after school."
  2504.
2505. "I did not feel like going to home, so I stayed through the evening and eventually through the entire night."
  2506.
2507. "I walked long concentric circles around a randomly chosen landmark."
  2508.
2509. "For some reason, the nightly city felt fascinating."
  2510.
2511. "So I walked its streets."
  2512.
2513. "At every intersection it was possible to choose your direction at random because they all lead nowhere."
  2514.
2515. "The aimless wandering made me see things differently."
  2516.
2517. "The lack of anything to do gave my brains time to mull over… whatever I was thinking about back then."
  2518.
  2519. "I can't remember anymore."
  2520.
  2521. rin "Is this it?"
  2522.
2523. "Her voice drags me from my reminiscence."
  2524.
2525. "She doesn't sound bored. Rather, her tone is inquisitive, uncertain as to why I dragged her out here but curious to find out."
  2526.
2527. hi "Yeah. Have you ever been out all night? It's like a different world."
  2528.
2529. "The remark sends her thinking for a while, looking around as if she was looking for something."
  2530.
2531. "The wisps of light reflecting from the corners of her eyes are suddenly very sharp."
  2532.
2533. rin "It's not a different world. It's the same world, just asleep."
  2534.
2535. rin "What do you think this town is dreaming of? Maybe something like car sheep or cloud sheep? Why are dreams always about sheep or phallic objects?"
  2536.
2537. rin "I've never seen a sheep dream."
  2538.
2539. rin "Do different towns dream of different things?"
  2540.
2541. hi "Probably. How could they not?"
  2542.
2543. "I answer half joking, half spurring her on. For the first time tonight, Rin seems like a bit of her life has returned to her."
  2544.
2545. "She doesn't continue her list of rhetoric questions though."
  2546.
2547. "The cool breeze blowing between the buildings seems to steal the conversation before it even really begins."
  2548.
2549. "Too bad, it looked like Rin would get out of her blue mood."
  2550.
  2551. hi "Are you cold?"
  2552.
  2553. "I ask because I am."
  2554.
2555. hi "Want go there to get somewhere warm?"
  2556.
2557. "We are standing in front of a 24h karaoke place. The red neon light sign is missing the last character, but it doesn't matter."
  2558.
  2559. rin "Will you sing?"
  2560.
2561. "Rin's pensive expression tells me that she doesn't fancy singing, but it's not the first thing in my mind either."
  2562.
  2563. hi "No."
  2564.
2565. rin "Then we can go."
  2566.
2567. "The insides of the karaoke parlor are warm and welcoming."
  2568.
2569. "A friendly looking lady greets us, and after collecting my money shows us to a room with promises of bringing the coffee I ordered right away."
  2570.
2571. hi "Do you want something else?"
  2572.
2573. "She shrugs dismissively but more importantly, in asking that I realize how little I really know about Rin."
  2574.
2575. "Emi is right, she rarely tells anything substantial about herself."
  2576.
2577. "Her preferences, her dislikes… I know something of that, but I feel like I know nothing of her."
  2578.
2579. "It's like Rin is open to everything, equally (dis)interested in everything on the outset."
  2580.
2581. "Only giving straight answers if asked, and only of things she is certain about."
  2582.
2583. "Sometimes she locks herself inside her inner world, shutting everything else out."
  2584.
2585. "Other times, her thoughts flow freely from her mind, but they are not organized in a fashion that would make them intelligible to anyone else."
  2586.
2587. hi "Do you ever feel like you are trying to reach out for something that is impossible to reach?"
  2588.
2589. "Rin turns her gaze from the track catalogue she was absentmindedly shuffling with her feet, tilting her head quizzically."
  2590.
2591. "I like how I nowadays manage to catch her attention just by speaking aloud."
  2592.
  2593. rin "All the time."
  2594.
2595. rin "At least I think so. Isn't that just what painting is?"
  2596.
2597. "Huh. Never thought about it that way."
  2598.
2599. "But she is right, of course. Pictures of ideas."
  2600.
2601. "She told it to me before, how art and intent rarely meet, and the end result is only an approximation, an echoing image of the almost Platonic idea the artist has."
  2602.
2603. "It's kind of sad, if nobody ever will see what the artists really wants them to see."
  2604.
2605. hi "I wish I could understand you."
  2606.
2607. "She looks at me melancholically, roused by my thoughts materializing as spoken aloud words."
  2608.
  2609. rin "Me too."
  2610.
2611. "Whether she meant she wished for me to understand her, her to understand me, or her to understand herself, I never ask, nor do I find out"
  2612.
2613. "Rin lies down on the couch, looking very tired although the sharpness that took over her when we were outside has not left her eyes."
  2614.
2615. "The fatigue from the walking has piled up on my shins too so I follow suit, claiming the other couch that is perpendicularly placed."
  2616.
2617. "Our heads are pretty close to each other, but neither can see the other."
  2618.
2619. "We lie there, looking at the ceiling."
  2620.
2621. "When the coffee arrives we drink it, banishing the drowsiness for a while."
  2622.
2623. "This self-inflicted insomnia is not as bad as the drug-induced one I was suffering from the first weeks here, but I still feel like sleeping would be a good idea."
  2624.
2625. "I can't fall asleep though, despite the drowsy feeling and the almost comfortable couch."
  2626.
2627. "The ceiling tiles are tempting me to count their number but I resist the urge."
  2628.
2629. "At some point I wonder if I should put on some karaoke background music to fill the void of silence, but decide against it."
  2630.
2631. "This impulsiveness is strange. First spending the night out in the town, now this."
  2632.
2633. "I don't feel like me. But I just needed to do something. Couldn't let Rin stay there lying on the floor."
  2634.
2635. "Maybe it spurred from that."
  2636.
2637. "I don't know if it will help, but rationally thinking, getting your mind away from something should give you new perspective and such when you get back to it."
  2638.
2639. "Problem is, rationality never was a thing for Rin."
  2640.
2641. "It doesn't restrict her like it restricts me."
  2642.
2643. "I feel something slap against my face and then fall along my cheek."
  2644.
  2645. "It's Rin's sleeve."
  2646.
2647. "It's so rare to see her even moving her arms, much less slapping someone with her empty sleeve that I just turn my face to look at her, dumbfounded."
  2648.
  2649. rin "Don't worry."
  2650.
2651. "I see her eyes searching for mine, serious and cryptic as they are, I'm not getting any explanation from there."
  2652.
2653. "What does she mean? Did she just read my mind?"
  2654.
  2655. hi "I will."
  2656.
2657. "She half sniffs, half breathes in at my response, Rin's equivalent for the dry chuckle these kinds of jokes are supposed to evoke."
  2658.
2659. "Small hints of a smile are wavering on her lips as she turns back to look at the ceiling."
  2660.
2661. "When she is like this, it makes me feel that maybe there is hope for us."
  2662.
2663. "We get along so well for being so different."
  2664.
2665. #"It's just, we never {b}really{/b} get along, because we are so different."
  2666.
2667. "It's just, we never really get along, because we are so different."
  2668.
2669. "Maybe it was Rin's passionate approach to her own art exhibition, maybe it was my careless words, but last week was different from usual."
  2670.
2671. "The small friction between us seems to be somewhat volatile, but at least we now seem to be back to normal."
  2672.
  2673. "Relatively speaking."
  2674.
  2675. #timeskip
  2676.
2677. "When the time is over, we are already ready to leave back into the night."
  2678.
2679. "We pick yet another direction to go."
  2680.
2681. "The wee hours are passing slowly as we measure the streets of the town one step at a time."
  2682.
2683. "The relaxed atmosphere that the interlude at the karaoke place created breaks through the night, giving us the sense of wild freedom that this kind of thing is supposed to give."
  2684.
2685. "We are finally at ease, not minding the lone and rare passers-by, the eerie darkness, each other, ourselves."
  2686.
2687. "We don't talk, save for the single remarks that are spoken into the night of the town and never answered."
  2688.
2689. "The details jump into the eye instead of the usual blur they are during the day."
  2690.
2691. "As the sky above the town changes from deep dark blue to grey, I know that our night is soon ending."
  2692.
  2693. hi "It's almost morning."
  2694.
2695. "Rin looks up too and nods at me."
  2696.
2697. "It's true. We've been staying up all night, and now the twilight's creeping through the sky, climbing higher by the minute."
  2698.
  2699. "It feels surreal."
  2700.
2701. "Sun won't come up for a while, but I get the feeling that the end of this night really is here."
  2702.
2703. hi "Should we get back to somewhere?"
  2704.
2705. "My silent companion nods again, twice, her hair waving in the breeze that seems to be heralding the morning."
  2706.
2707. "Abruptly, she takes off, taking the lead of this walkabout that has so far been in my hands."
  2708.
2709. "Rin's navigational skills are probably not any better than mine, but eventually we find ourselves at the bus station."
  2710.
2711. hi "I don't know if this was any help. I've done this a few times before, but it was then more because of a stupid impulse or not being able to sleep or that kind of thing."
  2712.
2713. hi "Maybe it was silly and didn't help you at all."
  2714.
2715. "She just nods as an answer."
  2716.
2717. "Rin turns around to leave, but instead of taking off, she hesitates a moment, and turns back again to face me."
  2718.
  2719. rin "Touch me."
  2720.
  2721. hi "What?"
  2722.
2723. rin "You say that too often. Just do it."
  2724.
2725. "Is this some silly dare? No, Rin is not that kind of a person."
  2726.
2727. "I raise my hand hesitantly even though I don't know what for I am doing this."
  2728.
2729. "Her eyes tell me that she's not going to explain."
  2730.
2731. "A thousand thoughts race through my head as I slowly bring my hand closer to Rin's face and press three fingers against her pale cheek."
  2732.

  4057.
4058. "As the room is small, she runs quickly out of things to look at, but nothing else transpires, allowing the uncomfortable silence take over the atmosphere of the small room."
  4059.
4060. "The mood is chilly to say the least, and both of us are on guard, waiting for the other to play first."
  4061.
  4062. hi "So…"
  4063.
4064. "I give up because she never would and try to open conversation because it seems that she wants to say something and I want to get over with it."
  4065.
4066. "Why else would she be here if she didn't want to talk?"
  4067.
4068. "I don't know what to say myself. I wanted to be angry, I am angry, but I can't bring myself to yell at her or anything."
  4069.
4070. "Despite this apathy, my voice catches her attention and she tries to search for the words as well, but it seems that she is not entirely certain as to why she's here either."
  4071.
4072. "And so, Rin simply takes a few steps to close the distance between us and rises on the tips of her toes to even out the height difference…"
  4073.
  4074. centered "“It's impossible.”"
  4075.
4076. centered "“There was no way for us to get along.”"
  4077.
4078. "It's a reflex and almost as an afterthought, the words “no,” “yes” and “maybe” surface into my mind simultaneously."
  4079.
4080. "My hand is between her lips and mine, a wall that I raised to guard against… something."
  4081.
4082. "Her breath feels warm against my fingers. The scent of her skin lingers about, the mysterious indescribable sensation that captures me and draws my eyes deep into hers."
  4083.
4084. "The look in her eyes is surprised, quizzical as to why the impertinent hand prevented her advances."
  4085.
4086. "Her eyes are really big and glistening with moisture, and staring right into my own with a soft gaze that I'm having a hard time to match."
  4087.
4088. "Rin's half-open mouth makes her look even more confused, although the sensual way her lips are arching is signaling something completely else."
  4089.
  4090. rin "Please."
  4091.
  4092. rin "I need you."
  4093.
4094. "The words come from her throat as a coarse whisper meant only for me, bypassing her tongue and teeth without giving them any chance to interrupt."
  4095.
4096. "They sober me in an instant, and I clumsily flinch back to get a little bit of distance between us, painfully bumping against my desk in the process."
  4097.
4098. "Maybe it's her choice of words, maybe the way she says it, but something in it puts me off."
  4099.
4100. "Something is wrong, something is terribly wrong again."
  4101.
4102. hi "Need me for what?"
  4103.
4104. "All the unpleasant feelings emerge again and I feel my heartbeat suddenly increasing at least tenfold."
  4105.
4106. "Talk about mood-shattering, but it was actually her who tried to break my original bad mood, or something like that."
  4107.
4108. "Rin's eyes go out of focus and back again as her body relaxes from its tensed state and she stands upright again."
  4109.
4110. rin "I don't think I was thinking about anything. Why do you draw patterns in that dust on your night table?"
  4111.
4112. rin "There is a word for that kind of thing but I can't remember…"
  4113.
4114. "Her remark almost throws me off track and I glance over her shoulder at the small table next to my bed but I can't see anything from this distance."
  4115.
4116. "So she needs me for nothing specific?"
  4117.
4118. "Just, happened to came by because she thought I'd be glad to see her after she shut me out, no complaints accepted, for a week."
  4119.
  4120. "Completely altruistic motives?"
  4121.
  4122. "Felt like it?"
  4123.
4124. hi "Bullshit. I can answer myself."
  4125.
4126. hi "To play mind games with whenever you want, to kiss whenever you want, to ignore whenever you want, to fulfill your whims whenever you want?"
  4127.
4128. hi "Is that it? What you need me for?"
  4129.
4130. "I'm sounding very angry again, even to myself."
  4131.
  4132. extend "Good."
  4133.
4134. "Rin too finally catches the mood and her curious expression changes instantly to something more uncharacteristic."
  4135.
4136. rin "No—" #reminder for the potential {nw} break
  4137.
4138. "She leaves it to that, her eyes restlessly wandering around, searching the room as if the words she tries to find were written in the tapestries of my walls."
  4139.
  4140. hi "Then what?"
  4141.
4142. rin "I needed to paint so—" #reminder for the potential {nw} break
  4143.
  4144. "Paint."
  4145.
4146. "My vision is filtering through the blood-red lens of unbridled anger."
  4147.
4148. hi "Don't give me that, Rin! I am not some fucking muse of yours, free to be abused for the sake of painting!"
  4149.
4150. hi "I am not some medium for whatever you aspire to, I am me!"
  4151.
4152. hi "So what if I don't know anything about my future?"
  4153.
4154. hi "I care for things too, I want some things too! Even I can dream of other things than nightmares!"
  4155.
4156. "I am yelling already but I'm way past the point of caring about things like that."
  4157.
4158. "Rin looks down at her toes and wiggles them a little melancholically while she takes in my outburst without saying anything to defend herself."
  4159.
4160. "Only after I have finished she tries to respond somehow."
  4161.
4162. rin "I can't do anything else. Or I can do all sorts of things, but I… can't…do."
  4163.
4164. rin "It's everything. It's the only thing."
  4165.
4166. "Yeah, that much I've figured out by myself, thanks. Art first, everything else second, or thousandth."
  4167.
4168. hi "What about me? Am I nothing? Mildly interesting because I am mildly interested about art?"
  4169.
4170. hi "Ever paused to consider things from perspective other than yours?"
  4171.
4172. "I snarl the words from between my teeth, they taste like poison anyway."
  4173.
4174. "Rin is positively alarmed by now. So at least she not completely dense, but it seems that she just doesn't understand what I'm angry about."
  4175.
4176. "I can't believe even she could be so stupid."
  4177.
  4178. rin "I didn't want to—" #reminder for the potential {nw} break
  4179.
4180. "This time it's Rin herself who interrupts her in midsentence."
  4181.
  4182. rin "Don't you understand? I can't."
  4183.
  4184. hi "Can't what?"
  4185.
4186. hi "You never explain yourself! How am I supposed to understand anything if you never say anything?"
  4187.
4188. hi "Why don't you ever talk?"
  4189.
  4190. hi "Say something!"
  4191.
4192. "Venting my anger at her feels satisfying and being satisfied about it feels terrible but I am not going to stop myself now."
  4193.
4194. "Not wanting to face my anger toe to toe, Rin turns around to steadfastly look out of my window even though there is nothing to look at."
  4195.
4196. "The worst of my ire gone, I shut up as I can't be bothered to keep on yelling at the back of her head, so the silence finally returns."
  4197.
4198. "Through my adrenaline-distorted vision I try to discern some hints of her reaction."
  4199.
4200. "My output was not the best kind but I hope Rin got the clue that she just can't ignore everything else whenever she feels like it."
  4201.
4202. "I'd hate it if she didn't. She never ever listens to anything, she's so unaffected by the world around her."
  4203.
4204. "Not this time, it seems."
  4205.
4206. "Her body is shaking like from held-back tears, but I already know that Rin is not crying."
  4207.
4208. "Still, did I go too far?"
  4209.
4210. hi "Look, I—" #reminder for the potential {nw} break
  4211.
  4212. rin "Go away."
  4213.
  4214. rin "Go away Hisao."
  4215.
4216. "Her voice is tiny and tired as she says this, but I hear the words clear as day."
  4217.
  4218. "…"
  4219.
4220. "What is there to say anymore?"
  4221.
4222. hi "This is my room."
  4223.
4224. "The blunt, hollow remark is a fitting coda for this unpleasant discussion that became an even more unpleasant and very one-sided yelling match."
  4225.
4226. "After a moment of collecting herself Rin just gives up, I can see it from the way she slumps her shoulders, and walks out."
  4227.
4228. "Even though she deliberately looks to the other direction, I can see how she's biting the corner of her lip so hard it might start bleeding if she won't stop."
  4229.
4230. "As she makes her exit I realize that she left the door open when she came in and my yelling must've echoed round the dorm hallways."
  4231.
  4232. "Sigh."
  4233.
4234. "After she is gone, I am left alone in the room with my guilt."
  4235.
4236. "As the thumping in my chest slowly subdues, the anxiety gains room."
  4237.
4238. "Somehow, I feel that none of this would've ever happened if not for me."
  4239.
4240. "No matter how infuriating, unbearable and outrageous Rin is, she is not the Rin I thought I knew."
  4241.
4242. "Or maybe I only thought I knew her, or maybe I knew the Rin that she isn't, or…"
  4243.
  4244. "…"
  4245.
4246. "Was it me who caused all this by talking Rin into taking her chances with the exhibition?"
  4247.
4248. "Am I directly responsible for Rin becoming like she has been for the past weeks?"
  4249.
4250. "I can't think of any other explanation for her weird behavior than the exhibition and all the things that came along with it."
  4251.
4252. "Maybe it was the only way that could've brought us closer but all it did was separate us further away from each other and now, beyond the reach of either of us."
  4253.
4254. "As there are no fitting blunt objects nearby, I bang my head hard against the wall."
  4255.
4256. "Twice, to make sure it hurts for real."
  4257.
  4258. #Act 3, "Distance", end.
