Chapter 141 - Birthday Party

　作戦決行当日。

　この日は、ノルンが家に帰ってくる日であり、
　ロキシーが休みの日であった。
　シルフィは別に休みではなかったが、アリエルに頼んで休日にしてもらった。
　準備オッケー。
　あとは作戦を実行に移すだけだ。

　俺はノルンとアイシャ、ロキシーの三人を呼び集めた。

D-day.

Today was a day when Norn would be coming home, and Roxy didn't work. Sylphy didn't have a free day or anything, but was given a day off by Ariel.

Preparations OK.

All that was left to was put the plan into action.

I called Norn, Aisha and Roxy together.

「話がある、ちょっと付き合って欲しい」
「何？」

　妹二人は首をかしげていた。
　しかし、ロキシーには、事前にサプライズパーティをすると伝えてある。
　料理の準備や、プレゼントの受け取り等をするには、妹二人を家から連れ出さなければならない。

"I have something to talk to you about. Could you go out with me for a bit?"

"What?"

My two sisters tilted their heads.

However, Roxy knew beforehand that today was a surprise party. To get the food prepared, and to collect the presents and whatnot, we had to get my two sisters out of the house.

「わかりました。お付き合いしましょう」

　と、自然と誘いに乗ってくれた。
　ククク、自分が祝われる側だとも知らずに。

"I understand. Let's go out for a while."

Roxy naturally accepted my invitation. Kukuku, she has no idea she's on the side being celebrated.

「ねえお母さん。お仕事残ってるけど出かけてきてもいい？」
「ルーデウス様のお誘いです。悪いわけがありません」
「じゃあ、あたしも行きます」

　アイシャはリーリャに許可を取り、承諾。

"Hey, Okaa-san. Though I still have some work to do, can I go out?"

"It's Rudeus-sama's invitation. Of course there's nothing wrong with doing so."

"Well then, I'll be going as well."

　ノルンはというと、少し難しそうな顔でシルフィを見た。

"..."

As for Norn, she was making a slightly difficult face at Sylphy.

「ロキシーさんが行くのに、シルフィ姉さんは行かないんですか？」
「えっ？」

　唐突にふられて、シルフィが挙動不審になった。

"Even though Roxy-san is going, you're not going, Sylphy-neesan?"

"Eh-?"

Sylphy suddenly trembled, and started acting suspiciously.

「えっと、ほら、ボクはルーシーの面倒を見ないといけないから！」
「先日はお二人とも出かけていたんですよね。シルフィ姉さんはそれでいいんですか？」
「えーっと……」

　シルフィは助けを求めるように俺に目を泳がせた。
　が、すぐにロキシーを見て、何かを思いついたように目を輝かせた。

"Umm, I have to look after Lucy, see!?"

"The other day the two of them went out together, didn't they? Are you really fine with this, Sylphy-neesan?"

"Ummmmm..."

Sylphy looked towards me for help. But, she immediately looked at Roxy, and as though she thought of something, her eyes sparkled.

「じ、実は、この話、ボクが計画したことなんだ」
「ん？　どういう事ですか？」
「ノルンちゃん、ロキシーとあんまり仲良くできてないよね」
「まあ、確かに」
「家の中で険悪って、よくないよね。
　だから、一緒にお出かけして親睦を深めてもらおうと思ったんだよ。
　お互いを知れば、より仲良くできるだろうからね」
「……なるほど、わかりました」

　ノルンはそれで納得した。
　むしろ、アイシャの方が訝しげな表情になっている。
　別にアイシャはロキシーと仲良くしてないわけでもないからな。
　ロキシーが明日の授業の準備をする時に、お茶や夜食を持って行ったりなどもしている。
　二人は二人で関係を築きつつある。

　とはいえ、アイシャはすぐに脳内で自己解決したらしい。
　まあいっかという顔をして、ニヤッと笑った。
　……まさか、気づいているんじゃなかろうな。

"Th-, the truth is, what Rudeus wants to talk about is something I planned."

"What do you mean?"

"Norn-chan, you're not very close to Roxy, right?"

"Well, certainly that's the case."

"It wouldn't be good if our family fought easily, right? That's why I was thinking that you could go out together and deepen your friendship. If you two get to know each other better, you'll probably become better friends, right?"

"...I see, I understand."

Norn accepted the explanation.

On the other hand, Aisha was making a doubtful expression. After all, it wasn't like Aisha and Roxy were on particularlar bad terms. Aisha would do things like bring Roxy tea and supper when she was preparing for the classes she had the next day. The two of them were currently building a relationship.

Having said that though, Aisha immediately settled things by herself. Making a face like 'Well, it's fine I guess', she broke into a smile.

...It couldn't be that she's noticed, could it?

「だから、今日は四人で楽しんできて」
「はい」
「はーい」
「お手数かけます」

　少々冷や汗を流しつつも、三人を外へと連れ出すことに成功した。

"That's why I want the four of you to have fun today."

"Yes."

"Okaaay~"

"I'll be in your care."

Though I had a bit of a cold sweat, I successfully left the house with the three of them.

　準備には時間が掛かる。
　料理や飾りつけ、プレゼントの準備を二人で行うのだ。
　余裕を見て、昼下がりまでは外で時間を潰したほうがいいだろう。

　とはいえ、商業街の方には行けない。
　プレゼントの受け取りにいったシルフィと鉢合わせても困る。

　もちろん、宿場街や工房街、学校で時間を潰してもいい。
　が、俺はそこである選択をした。

The preparations would take time. Two people would be doing all the preparations for the good, decorations and presents. To make sure they had enough time, it'd be better to kill time outside until early afternoon.

Having said that though, we couldn't go to the Commerce Street. It'd be bad if we bumped into Sylphy while she was out collecting the presents.

Of course, killing time at the Inn Street, Workshop Street or school would be fine as well. But I'd already made my choice.

「釣りですか」

　俺たちは、町の外に出ていた。
　喧騒から離れた静かな小川である。
　透明な川の中には、何匹もの魚影が見える。

"Fishing?"

We left town. Away from the hubbub of the town, we arrived at a quiet creek. You could see a number of fish in the clear water.

「ああ。こういうのって親睦を深めるにはいいだろう？」
「先ほどのシルフィの発言も、まるっきり嘘というわけではなかったわけですね」

　ロキシーとひそひそと話しつつ、あらかじめ用意しておいた釣具を取り出す。
　リールやルアーなんて気の利いたものは付いてない。
　よくしなる木材に、ジャイアントスパイダーの糸を組み合わせただけの、簡素な代物だ。
　これに、ラジアータフロッグの頬袋で作られた浮きと、鉄製の釣り針を付ける。
　餌はミミズだ。

"Ahh. This would probably be good for deepening friendship, right?"

"What Sylphy declared earlier wasn't a complete lie either, was it?"

Whilst Roxy spoke in a whisper, she produced the fishing gear we prepared in advance. We didn't bring anything proper like a reel and lure. They were simple items: giant spider silk was braided and attached to bendy timber. Attached to this was a float made from radiata frog cheek pouch, and an iron hook. We used earthworms for bait.

「私、釣りなんてやったことないです」
「あたしもあたしも。一度やってみたいと思ってたんだ」

　妹たちはそういいつつも、釣具を手にする。
　アイシャは、浮きと釣り針、そして用意してきた餌をパパッとつけて、川の方へと走っていった。
　そして、三平のようなダイナミックな動作で川に投げ入れていた。
　本当にやった事無いのだろうか。

"I've never done something like fishing before."

"Me neither, me neither. I've wanted to try it for once."

Whilst saying that, my sisters picked up the fishing tools. Aisha speedily assembled the float, hook and bait, and ran over to the creek. She then threw it into the water with movements like Sanpei.※ Has she really not done this before?

「兄さん、これどうするの？」

　ノルンはというと、釣り針と浮きを手に途方にくれていた。

"Onii-san, what do we do with this?"

Said Norn, at a loss as to what to do with the hook and float in her hand.

「ふふ、兄さんはわからんよ。何せ釣りなどやった事が無いからな」

　俺は前世ではインドア派だった。
　釣りになど行ったこともないし、興味もなかった。
　無論、この世界に来てからも、釣りなど一度もやったことがない。
　魚を手に入れたければ、川を凍らせればいいのだ。

"Huhu, your Onii-san doesn't know either. I've never done fishing or anything either, after all."

In my previous life, I was an indoors type. I'd never gone fishing before, not did I have any interest in it. Of course since coming to this world, I hadn't ever done so either. If I needed fish, I could just freeze the river.

「あの、ノルンさん。わたしが教えましょうか」

　ロキシーがおずおずといった感じで申し出た。
　どうやら、彼女は経験者らしい。
　彼女も未経験なら、三人であれこれ試行錯誤するのもよかったかもしれないが、教えてもらえるなら俺も教えてもらおう。

"Um, Norn-san. Shall I teach you?"

Roxy offered timidly. It seems that she has experience. If she didn't know either, it might've been fine if the three of us just trial-and-errored together, but if she's going to teach then I'll have her teach me too.

「……お願いします」

　ノルンは難しそうな顔で頷いた。
　やはり、ミリス教徒ということで、ロキシーには少々思う所があるらしい。
　もっとも、本気でロキシーのことを嫌っているわけではあるまい。

Norn nodded with a difficult expression. As expected, as an adherent of Milis she held a few thoughts about Roxy. However, it wasn't as though she really hated Roxy either.

「――ご自分でやってみてください」
「こうですか？」
「そうです。お上手ですね」
「……ありがとうございます」

　ロキシーが実に丁寧に教えている。
　ノルンもきちんという事を聞いている。
　よしよし。
　ノルンとロキシーにも、仲良くして欲しいのだ。

"――――Please try it yourself."

"Like this?"

"That's right. You're skilled, aren't you?"

"...Thank you."

Roxy very politely taught her.※ Norn was properly listening to her as well.

I want Norn and Roxy to get along as well.

　釣りが開始された。

　ロキシーは熟練者だった。
　なんというか、貫禄がある。
　俺が土魔術で作った椅子に座り、釣具を片手に持って半眼になって水面を見ている。
　その姿は、さながら座禅を組む修行僧のようであった。
　そして、わずかに手に伝わってくる振動に反応して、針を上げるのだ。
　先ほどからあまり大物は釣っていないようだが、それでも、現在で最も釣果を得ている。

We began fishing.

Roxy was experienced.

How do I say this? She felt dignified.

She was sitting on a chair I made from earth magic with a fishing rod in one hand, and watched the surface of the water, eyes half-closed. She was like a monk sitting in zazen. Then, reacting to the slight vibrations transmitted through her fishing rod, she raised the hook out of the water. For a while now she hadn't hooked any considerably large fish, but even so, she was the one who had caught the most.

「ロキシーさん、上手ですね」
「一人旅をしていた頃は、出来る限り自分で食べ物をとらなければいけませんでしたからね」
「そういえば、旅をしていた頃、ルイジェルドさんが魚を取ってくれました」
「彼も釣りを？」
「いえ、槍で、トンって水の中を突いたら、穂先に魚が三匹もついてて――」

　ノルンはというと、ロキシーの隣にすわり、ぽつぽつと会話をしている。
　ぎこちないながらも、いい雰囲気だ。

"You're quite skilled, Roxy-san."

"When I was journeying by myself, I had to catch as much food as possible by myself, after all."

"Speaking of which, during the time I was travelling, Ruijeld-san caught fish for us."

"Did he fish as well?"

"No, he would thrust his spear into the water, and three fish would be stuck to the speartips, and――――"


As for Norn, she was sitting next to Roxy making conversation, little by little. Though it was a bit stiff, there was a good atmosphere.

「あっ、ノルンさん、アタリがきています。引いてください」
「えっ、えっ！　は、はいっ！　あっ……」
「よくある事です。餌を付け直しましょう」

　ノルンは集中力散漫らしく、また一匹のがしてしまったようだ。
　だが、ロキシーと会話する事自体は楽しいらしく、表情は明るかった。


"Ah, Norn-san, you've caught something. Please pull it in."

"Eh-, eh-! Y-, yes-! Ah-..."

"That happens a lot. Let us put bait on it again."


It seems that Norn lost concentration and let one escape again. But, it seems that just talking to Roxy was fun, and her expression brightened up.

「ふふふん、お兄ちゃん。さっきから調子が悪いみたいだけど、どうしたのかなー？」

　アイシャはというと、絶好調だ。
　何度か餌をとられたものの、３匹も吊り上げている。

"Huhuhun, Onii-chan. It seems that you've been doing badly for a while now, but I wonder what's wrong~?"


As for Aisha, she was doing perfectly. Though she lost her bait a few times, she had caught more than three fish.

「負けた方が勝った方の言うことを聞くって約束、忘れちゃダメだからね！」

　先ほど、アイシャが「どっちが多く魚を釣るか競争しよう」なんて言ってきたので受けてやったが、現在の俺の釣果は０匹。
　どうにも負けそうだ。
　負けるのはいいが。
　しかし、どうして初心者同士なのにこうも差が出てしまうのか。
　アイシャはなんでもうまくやるな。

"You'd better not forget what happens when we win or lose, okay!?"


A while ago, Aisha said something like "Let's have a competition to see who catches more" and I accepted, but right now I had 0 catches. It seems that I was going to lose. Though I'm fine losing... Why is it that there's such a difference, even though we're both beginners? Aisha is good at everything, isn't she?

「俺に出来ることにしてくれよ」
「何してもらおっかなー。一晩ギューってしてもらいながら、アイシャ可愛いよ、なんて囁いてもらおっかな。それとも、シルフィ姉とかロキシー姉みたいに――」
「エッチィのは無しにしよう。父さんに怒られる」
「お父さん出すの禁止ー」

　なんて話はするが、どうせ値の張る小物をねだられる程度だろう。
　しかし負けるのはどうだろうか。
　こんな所で、妹に兄を超えさせていいのだろうか。

　否。
　ここは俺の、兄としての威厳を見せ付けるべきではないだろうか。
　優しくて頼りない兄より、力強くて頼れる兄を。

"Please make the prize something I can do."

"What am I gunna make you do~? Shall I make you embrace me for a night, and whisper things like 'Aisha, you're so cute' to me~? Or perhaps like Sylphy-nee and Roxy-nee――――"

"Let's not do anything perverted. Tou-san will get mad at me."

"Mentioning Tou-san is forbidden~"


Though we had a conversation like that, in the end she'll probably just ask for an expensive accessory, or something of that level.

But is it fine to lose?

Is it fine for the little sister to surpass her brother at a time like this?

　魔眼を開眼した。
　そのまま、浮きをじっと見つめる。

　アイシャは魚籠に手を突っ込むと、靴を掴んで川の中へと投げ捨てた。

"Though the one just now looked like a boot, it's a fine creature of the river. I call it the... uhh, Shoes Fish."

"You're going to say 'shoes'!? No count! That's cheating!"


Aisha thrust her hand into the fish basket, and threw the boot into the river.

「ああっ！」

　川にゴミを捨ててはいかんというのに。

　まあいい。これもまたキャッチアンドリリースだ。
　先ほどの靴はまだ子供だった。
　ここで逃がしておけば、頑張って海まで行って、成長して戻ってくるに違いない。
　そう思っておこう。

"Ahh!"


Even though you shouldn't throw rubbish into rivers...


Well whatever. This is also a catch and release.

The boot just now was still a youngling.

If we set it free here, it'll try its best and make it to sea, and come back once it's fully grown. There's no mistake.

　なんて考えているうちに、アイシャが４匹目を釣り上げてしまった。

　俺は今夜、アイシャの慰み者になります……。

"Ah-! Mn... alright! That makes my fourth one!"


While I was thinking those things, Aisha caught her fourth one.

With this, I probably can't win anymore, huh?

Sorry Sylphy, Roxy.

Tonight, I'll be made into Aisha's plaything.

「そうです、いいですよ、引いて、引いて！」
「うっ……くっ……あっ！」
「頑張ってください。慎重に！」

　ふと騒がしくなったので見てみると、ノルンが魚を釣り上げていた。
　大物だ。
　錦鯉ぐらいありそうだ。

"That's right, you're doing well! Pull it in, pull it in!"

"Uu... Kuh... Ah-!"

"Please keep at it. With caution."


Things had suddenly gotten noisy, and when I turned to look, I found that a fish was hanging on Norn's fishing rod.

A big one.

It was about as big as a carp.

「やった！　つれた！　初めて釣れた！」
「すごい！　大物ですよ！」

　ノルンが笑顔で喜び、ロキシーが手を叩いて喜んでいる。
　実に微笑ましい光景だ。

　来た甲斐があったな。

"I did it! I caught one! It's my first one!"

"Amazing! It's a big catch!"


Norn was rejoicing with a smiling face, and Roxy was happily clapping.

It really was a scene to smile at.


It was worthwhile coming here.

　そうしている間に、日が傾いてきたので帰る事とする。

We passed our time like that, and because the sun was beginning to sink, I decided to return home.

「そろそろ帰ろうか」

　そういうと、妹二人がだだをこねた。

"I think we should leave soon."


When I said that, my two sisters whined.

「えー、もう！？」
「……あと１匹ぐらい釣りたいです」

　楽しい時間というものはあっという間に過ぎるものだ。
　もう少し、あと少しと思う気持ちはわかる。
　だが、お楽しみはこれからだ。

"Ehhhhh? Already!?"

"...I want to catch just one more."


When you're having fun, time passes in the blink of an eye.

I understand that they want to have just a bit more time.

But, the fun starts from now.

「暗くなったら、魔物が出るかもしれないからな」
「お兄ちゃんがやっつければいいじゃん！」
「ロキシー先生もいるのに……」

　確かにこの辺の魔物なら、確かになんとかはなる。
　俺とロキシー。
　二人もいれば、ノルンとアイシャを護衛しきることは可能だろう。
　今の俺には、それぐらいの力はあるはずだ。

　とはいえ、それはそれだ。
　そんな事を言い出せば、深夜までここに残ってしまう。
　例え、この後に予定が無かったとしても、万が一の可能性の芽は摘んでおくべきだ。

"Once it darkens, monsters might come out, you know?" [←Rudeus]

"Isn't it fine if you just kill then, Onii-chan!?" [←Aisha]

"Roxy-sensei is here as well..." [←Norn]


Certainly if it's the monsters in this area, then we could do something about it, Roxy and I.

With the two of us here, we could probably guard Norn and Aisha.

The current me should have enough power to do so.


Having said this though, that's that, and this is this.

If I told them that I was strong enough, we'd end up here until late at night.

Even if we didn't have plans after this, we shouldn't take any chances.

「だめだ。また来ればいいだろ？」
「お兄ちゃん、自分が釣れないからって……」
「俺が本気を出したら、魚ぐらいいくらでも取れるんだよ」

　俺は電撃も爆発も使えるから、釣りにこだわる必要なんてないんだ。
　負け惜しみなんかじゃないやい。

"We can't. Isn't it fine if we come here again?"

"Onii-chan, just because you couldn't catch any, you..."

"If I got seriously, I could do something as easy as catching fish."


I can use both electric and explosions, so there was no reason I had to limit myself to fishing.

I'm not just being a sore loser.

「いいから、帰るよ」
「はぁい」
「はい」

　釣った魚を魔術で瞬間冷凍して、持ち帰ることにする。
　途中で焼いて食べる事も考えたが、パーティーはお腹を空かせて行くものだ。
　魚は明日か明後日にでも食べればいいだろう。

　帰路。
　アイシャとノルンは、どっちが多く釣れた、どっちが大きかったと楽しげな会話をしている。
　その後ろを、俺とロキシーが付いていく。
　ロキシーの顔は、なにやら一つの事を成し遂げたようであった。
　彼女とノルンは、ずっとギクシャクしていた。
　今回のことで、それが改善に向かっただろう

"Come on now, we're going home." [←Rudeus]

"Okay." [←Norn]


I froze the fish we caught in an instant, and decided to carry them home.

I had considered roasting them and eating them on the way, but it was better to keep ourselves hungry for the party.

It would be fine if we ate the fish tomorrow or the day after.
