  9. Mal serves as one of the clan guards, posted at the lair's entrance. It's his job to make sure that those who come into the lair are friendly, or at least mean no harm, and to chase off any dangers, draconic or otherwise, that try to get in. If they won't be chased off, then he's to hold them back while he raises the alarm, so that Moira and however many of her defenders are needed can come help. Plague dragons tend to be fierce by nature, and Mal's red eyes combined with his forbidding black and red colors certainly give that effect. Mal rather enjoys coming off as fierce and intimidating, but don't be fooled. If any dragons who aren't a threat seem genuinely afraid of him, he immediately adopts a gentler attitude, speaking softly to them and doing his best to set them at ease.

  11. Although he's a dauntless fighter who never backs down, he wanted to learn how to fight so that he could defend those who were weaker than him. It wasn't an attitude that was particular admired in the Scarred Wasteland, but he found that he fit in perfectly in the Clan of Amity. Moira has trained him in battle, but what he truly wants is to be a guard and defender, not a warrior. He views the clan as his own family, and though he tries to act tough and impressive, he can't help but let it slip in his attitude how much he cares about them. Mal's worst kept secret is that despite his gruff exterior, he has a heart of pure marshmallow. He has a particular weakness for hatchlings, and it's not unusual to see the tough defender with a hatchling hanging off each wing. [/columns]

  30. Fyodor is one of the clan's hunters, helping to keep everyone there fed. He has always been a little bit wild and a shy of the presence of other dragons. The other dragons in the Sunbeam Ruins where he was born, most of them sophisticated and scholarly, whispered that he was too wild and ill-mannered, with no interest in higher things like pursuing knowledge, uncivilized. They in turn made him jumpy and nervous, trying to avoid being caught in loudly talking groups or crowded rooms. He always preferred to be out in the wilderness, where it was wide open and quiet, and he could finally feel calm and able to take a deep breath. On the rare occasions he did try to socialize with them, he felt more than a little outcast. So he left for the Southern Icefield, hoping the vast expanse of snow and tundra would be more to his taste.
  31.
  32. There, he found himself in the territory of the Clan of Amity. To his surprise, although they clearly knew about his presence, no one came to chase him off, or tell him that the land and hunting rights here belonged to their clan. They didn't even try to approach him once they realized he was hiding or avoiding them. However, he began finding small things left where he would be sure to come across them. Gifts of food, on the day before a blizzard kept him from being able to hunt. Medicine when the cold temperatures he wasn't used to made him cough and sneeze. A neck wrap and vest neatly folded on a tree stump, with a note telling him to bundle up and stay warm. Finally, a map, with a clan lair clearly marked, and the words “Come visit any time!” Fyodor followed the map to their lair, bringing a gift of food he'd caught. He was welcomed inside, by dragons who seemed to understand his need for space, who didn't crowd him or all try to talk to him at once, and let him wander back out without a word when it got to be too much. His visits, bringing food each time, became more frequent, until he'd somehow become a clan member, and one of their best hunters. Although he still enjoys his solitude, and sometimes spends days at a time away hunting alone, he happily considers the Clan of Amity his home. [/columns]

  50. Fain had always known that he was striking, with his dark obsidian scales patterned in sky blue stripes, and his flashing green eyes. He was proud of the effect his handsome appearance had on other dragons when he went for a leisurely flight, or a stroll through the lair. And he was an expert at picking out exactly the apparel to show off his good looks to their best effect. He was quite popular in his clan, at least, until he did the unthinkable and befriended a Plague dragon, Juwel. Nature and Plague are known for their enmity, and he tried to keep the nocturne he'd met at the border between their regions a secret. But it soon got out, and both dragons found themselves unwelcome in their old homes. However, they had heard stories about a clan who promised haven and acceptance to any who needed help, and the two friends promised each other they'd find it together.

  52. Find it they did, after an exhausting flight across the ocean, and nothing had ever looked more welcoming. Fain, a little worried that his friend wouldn't be any more welcome in the Southern Icefield, informed them first thing that they'd come here together, and if one couldn't stay then they'd leave together too. He needn't have worried. They were both welcomed equally, which earned them Fain's friendship and loyalty, not given lightly and never forgotten. Now Fain spends his time as the clan's stylist and fashion consultant, using the skills he enjoys the most. Fain takes joy in being able to brighten up the days of the sick, lost, or unhappy refugees the Clan of Amity takes in and make them feel good about themselves again with some deftly chosen accessories and a little styling. Although his skills are much in demand, he always finds time to spend with his best friend Juwel. [/columns]

  69. Juwel had always been taught that as a Plague dragons, she had to fight to be stronger than everyone else. The Scarred Wasteland isn't very forgiving, and although deep down a little part of her didn't like it, she learned to be fierce and take what she needed before anyone else could. However, she liked to sneak off by herself, to the edge of the region, where the Scarred Wastelands began to meet the Viridian Labyrinth. There she could be alone, without having to fight anyone, lie in the sparse tufts of grass, and daydream. She thought Fain was a daydream too, at first. She'd never seen a dragon so elegant before. But none of her daydreams had ever walked over and introduced themselves. Although the two of them came from vastly different backgrounds, Nature and Plague flight's feud being notorious, they found more and more in common with each other, and soon they'd become inseparable friends. So when their clans found out, and Juwel was told to abandon her friend or leave their clan, she chose her friend. They had heard stories about a clan who promised haven and acceptance to any who needed help, and the two friends promised each other they'd find it together.
  70.
  71. Find it they did, and although her loyal friend Fain made it clear that they would both leave and keep searching if they weren't both accepted there, they had no need to leave. The Clan of Amity welcomed them both in, regardless of flight. Juwel worried about finding a place there. Fain had his own skills, but what job was there for a reluctant warrior? Would she be forced to fight again? No, she was told. No one was forced into doing things they disliked in their clan. But perhaps she would be willing to use her warrior training in a different way? The clan provided escorts in and out of their territory for dragons who might be weak, injured, have several hatchlings along, any who needed protection. The sight of a guard detail alone often deterred the cowards who sought to prey on the weak, but they couldn't promise no fighting at all. Juwel still found herself accepting. This was different from fighting only for herself. It felt like it meant something to defend others. She found it much more fulfilling than anything from before, and now carries out her duties proudly. Although she's often busy, even volunteering to take extra shifts to ensure that everyone who needs it has a safe escort to their destination, she always finds time to spend with her best friend Fain.
