Mods list 1.7.10 edition:

>Major vanilla overhauls
Diversity - Adds a lot of diversity to villages and recent additions of dungeons.
Gany's Surface - Back ported 1.8.x vanilla additions, removed most of the extra fluff.
Improving Minecraft - Why isn't this already in the game?
Redicovered - Enables would-have-been vanilla content, stuff that never got finished or scrapped.

>World gen or behavior
Bedrock Layer - Flat bedrock.
Dense Ores - Variety to ore gen.
Stalker Creepers - Creepers be creeping.

>Simple things you take for granted playing modded but closer to vanilla, basically RP2 mechanics
Better Storage - Chests, backpacks, crafting.
Redstone Paste - Better Redstone.
Hopper Ducts - Basic pipes and sorting.
Spice of Life - With just the basic mods there is almost double the amount of food stuffs, why not give them a try?
Ender Storage - If there had been lava pumps or quarries, I'd said use carts, but in a vanilla setting I feel these are actually quite balanced.
Dimensional Anchors - Chunk loading but you've got to fuel it.
Helper Tools - Wands to help with big builds.
Bams Graves - Grave Stones but only if you keep a set of chests on your person.
Deconstrunction Table - Give those mob drops a use as materials.

>Small fixes
Stackie - Less clutter, less lagg.
Treecapitator - Configured as enchantment.
Fast Leaf Decay - Kind of redundant once you get capitator, but I still find it useful early on.
Auto Sapling - Leave the saplings behind and the forest grows anew.
Connected Glass - Glass textures always bother me.

>Server and competition
Death Counter - Shame counter.
Morpheus - Less waiting for daytime.
Universal Coins - eConomy, needs configure with diversity for villager trade.
Extra Achievements - More leaderboards.
