Captain EO changes a desolate mechanical world into a verdant and appealing one and changes the ugly Supreme Leader into a beautiful woman through a power that he can apparently summon when he dances. At first, this just sounds like a clever plot contraption to make Jackson dance in the middle of the film, but think about it--what is this really saying? That’s imagination at work, the dancing and singing. Music is an aural actualization of imagination, in essence. The name of the theme song is “We Are Here to Change the World”, right? They sing that while EO is transforming everything with this power he summons when he sings and dances. So the film is literally telling us that with our imagination and the power of our minds, we can move forward and change the world!
