  142. BACKSTORY:
  143.
  144. Ikoma Teruhide is a young, mostly unseasoned courtier from the Ikoma Bard School. He is the oldest of two children in his family (he has a younger sister), and is 18 years of age. From a young age, he was keenly aware of the histories of the Lion clan...and especially the history of his great-grandfather. His great-grandfather committed an act of great shame as a yojimbo, and was consigned to the Deathseekers to atone. However, he took ill and rapidly died soon after this pronouncement, leaving his shame unatoned for. As a result, this blemish remains on his family, a mistake that Teruhide wishes deeply to rectify.
  145.
  146. When he became of age to send into training, he was picked up for the Bard school by Ikoma Akihiko, a wizened old man who embodies all of the ideals of Ikoma himself in his love of fine sake, fine women, and fine song. Teruhide views being chosen for the Bard school as both a high honor and a huge favor on the part of Akihiko-sama, while the old Bard just views it as doing his job and picking the best candidates he can. While he has repeatedly brushed off Teruhide's insistence on repaying him for the honor, he's come to accept that the enthusiastic young man will do it anyway, and has settled into a more mentoring role with him. Teruhide, for his part, has resolved to help his mentor in little ways to improve his life, rather than the sweeping ways he is sure his mentor will reject (Obligation).
  147.
  148. Teruhide is somewhat headstrong, and irreverent to his own limits. He is confident that he can, and must, do great things in the courts in order to clear his family name, and will not take "impossible!" for an answer (Overconfident). He has spent much of his time knee-deep in history books, both of Rokugan and the Lion Clan, and has the ability to recall seemingly irrelevant details he has gleaned from the stories (Precise Memory). This focus has also helped to still his mind, and shrug off attempts to befuddle him (Clear Thinker).
  149.
  150. Teruhide is a young man of 18 years, with short black hair and expressive brown eyes. He is fairly handsome, though not excessively so. He is free of scars or other distinguishing markings, beyond a large ring with a red gem he wears on his right hand. The ring belonged to his great-grandfather, and reminds him of the hard work he has ahead of him.
  151.
  152. GREAT-GRANDFATHER: Teruhide's great-grandfather Ikoma Teruo is the source of his line's shame, and for good reason. In his younger days, he amassed a reputation as a flashy, self-confident ladies' man with the skill at dueling to back it up. As he grew older, however, his antics were viewed with less and less favor, especially once he was married and had children. This culminated in his mid 30s, sometime after the birth of his second child. At the Imperial Winter Court, he had set his eye on a young courtier, only to find out that she had been betrothed earlier in the day as part of the Court proceedings. Deciding there was no time like the present, he seduced her. Unfortunately for him, they were caught by her betrothed, and Teruo was challenged to a duel. Both of their superiors, however, refused to give sanction to the duel and instead did their best to cover it all up quietly, as to not embarass both clans. Instead, Teruo challenged the man to an illegal duel, and accidentally slew him. This caused enough of an incident that the Ikoma family forbade Teruo to commit Seppuku, instead forcing him into the Deathseekers. As a final gesture of bad luck from the fortunes, he took ill and rapidly died en route back home from the court. As a result, while his family remained in the Ikoma family, this unredeemed shame would haunt the line for generations.
