  46. Exception: Imperative sentences (instructions) don’t need a subject. We understand the subject is “you”.
  47. Don’t send text messages. = This is an order. I am instructing you not to send texts.
  48. You don’t send text messages. = This is a fact. You (for whatever reason) don’t text other people.

  50. A sentence also needs to express a complete thought.
  51. When I got home. - fragment, because the meaning is just a specific time, not an action
  52. If it rains. - fragment, because the meaning is a condition, not what will happen in that condition

  54. Fragments are always incorrect in academic writing, but they are very common in conversations, because we don’t repeat information that the other person already said or asked.
