  1. The books just aren’t optimistic and Gerry (I just call Tarrant that in my head) gets a pretty shitty ending.
  2.
  3. Why?
  4. >Vryce walks through what is essentially nine circles of hell to save Gerry’s soul from the fae he’s contracted to: which is by far the most romantic thing I have ever read in fiction
  5. >Gerry survives the cost of saving Vryce and co, he survives getting tortured in hell for doing a good deed, he survives breaking the fae contract, he survives almost dying to his fucking heart and he survives getting mindraped by the Iezu only to get his head cut off by the completely drug addicted unsympathetic jerk of a descendant
  6. >Said descendant now goes on to fucking burn the Forest and all the books and knowledge that Gerry keeps there
  7. >Only Vryce will ever know Gerry as anything more than a complete monster and Vryce is the only one who mourns his death. Even though Gerry basically offered up his soul because he led a society on a path which wasn’t total destruction (which contravened the terms of his contract and essentially damned him to eternal hell because he let Vryce’s morals get to him) and his life to end the magic that was manifesting every negative thought in humankind’s heads his name will be slandered for the rest of eternity
  8. >It turns out Gerry survives at the cost of his identity – if he ever tries to reclaim his identity he will die for real. Consequently, he can never see Vryce again and the last pages of the book are of him saying goodbye to Vryce forever
