flowers are not in bloom

before our ambitions, we had
hospital lights and spellings bees

like, an empty parking lot
we were given numerous sticks of sharp, colored chalk, and told
here is where you are
and here is the exit
a crossword if you want
no mail in rebate

before our ambitions
we were given time
from the old man
who doesn’t shave
he isn’t all bad
he is just
tired

like
give a kid a dollar
a fat kid who only likes candy
and so he buys a box
and a corporation
only for candy, entirely for candy

because that is his ambition
