3/26/18 - Octathlon Results

Holy Crap, I actually finished Octathlon!!!!!! HYPE!!!!!!!!

In all seriousness though, after 20:10:17 seconds, I not only finished the octathlon, but managed to win by default because every single other person dropped out. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that I would win octathlon, lol. Huge thanks to everyone who watched even just a little bit of it, as without you guys, it would have been rough. Special shoutouts to some of my best friends online, Nacho, Loz, and Draco, who voice chatted with me as much as they could, helped keep me sane, and in the case of Nacho helped me keep track of bonus stars throughout MP3 and 4. Before I get into Octathlon more thoroughly, I will say that the plan for the next few weeks is simply TY. In addition, I will be participating in a PMD: Explorers of Sky All Special Episodes relay race soon! More info to come when I get it.

	Now, onto Octathlon details! Mario Party 1 and 2 both went really well, considering I PB'd in both of them! Mario Party 3 was......a disaster. i'm not surprised however given that was the only one i failed to adequately practice beforehand. Mario Party 4 went decent, scoring myself another new PB (MP3 was technically also a PB, but by default). Mario Party 5.....wow. I've never gotten fucked so hard in Mario Party in my life. MP5 almost made me quit (SHoutouts to Draco who kept me going during this rough patch). Mario Party 6 went decent (No PB though). Mario Party 7 was amazing! Couldn't have asked for a better MP7. Plus, another PB! Finally, Mario Party 8 also went really well with....ANOTHER PB! That's a total of 6 PB's across 8 games!!!!!! That's incredible!

Finally, I want to do my top ten list. I think it's only appropriate that i do my top ten highlights (and lowlights) from Octathlon. I'll also include timestamps in my highlights so you guys can watch too!

10. False start in Mario Party 2

Not even an hour into Octathlon, I did a dumb. Upon starting Mario Party 2, I immediately went in with a bang....by saving the game and quitting on accident. Luckily, it didn't cost me too much time, just a funny early mistake I made. Speaking of early mistakes...

9. False starts in Mario Party 4

After finally finishing Mario Party 3, you would think that I would be HYPED to get onto four. Well, I was! In fact, i was so hyped that I decided to load a saved game that was right at the end of the game cutscene! Oh well, mistakes happen. Except the second time I tried starting I selected the wrong board to start with. And I thought my Mario Party 2 false start was bad lol

8. Fuck the Mystical Mushroom (Mario Party 1)

Mario Party 1 had the trend of the harder, more RNG heavy minigames going really well while some easy one's I choked. And then there was The Mystical Mushroom. A simple minigame, where all I had to do was wait for the music to stop playing, jump on the mushroom and hit the treasure chest first. Sounds easy, right? That's because it is. Yet I managed to fail it not once, not even twice, but FOUR times! And, when i did get it, I dont even know how! First mistake of the Octathlon, and far from the last.

7. Bobsledding for Miracles (Mario Party 2)

Man, what a finish! I genuinely thought I lost the minigame, yet the game in a rare moment of kindness opted to give the victory to me and Luigi. Thank you bobsled gods!

6. R.I.P Chilly Waters (Mario Party 3)

My goal going into MP3 was to not have to redo any of the boards. Well, that dream was crushed on board 1 because of my inability to do simple arithmetic. I was under the impression that the Happening bonus star was gonna go to Yoshi, and with that I would have 3 stars, mario would have 3, but because I had more coins I would win the board. Except apparently I miscounted because the Happening star ended up being a tie between mario and Yoshi. This gave Mario 4 stars while i was at 3, meaning......I lost. This was my biggest mistake in the entire Octathlon, costing me around 45 minutes. Luckily, once I lost I recruited Nacho to help me track bonus stars the rest of the way through so that way I didn't fuck up a second time.

5. DK! DONKEY KONG IS HERE! (Mario Party 7)

Mario Party 7 was going really well when I began Pagoda Peak. For those unaware, the goal is to reach the top of the mountain with 100 coins. Usually it takes several trips up the mountain as you slowly acquire coins. The game however knew I was in a hurry, and opted to let me roll a 10 on the first turn, letting me land on DK. I then rolled another 10, landing on DK a second time. I then rolled a 9, giving me A THIRD DK! By this point, i was already halfway up the mountain at 29 spaces travelled, and had 110 coins 60 of which were from DK! GG DK, GG!

4. Feeling Lucky? (Mario Party 8)

Here's the scenario. Me and CPU both at 1 star. It takes two to win. It's the CPU's turn, and he is two spaces away from getting the star he needs to win the board. Obviously, it felt hopeless. Then, the die roll heard round the world.......he rolled a 1. Holy Crap! While I was trying to be quiet as my roommate was asleep literally two feet to my left, I was freaking the fuck out on the inside. 1/10 chance, and it happened. good thing I bought that thrice candy!

3. The Minigame Heard round the world! (Mario Party 7)

While many games I did practice before the octathlon, nothing came close to Mario Party 7, and to be specific, the final bowser minigame. For those unaware, the final bowser minigame is triggered when you approach the middle of the board with a star. If you win the minigame, you are done! Lose, and you need to go back and get another star to bring back. Meanwhile, your progress in the minigame is saved. The minigame itself is simply an elevator where by hitting dice blocks you cause it to rise. Get it to reach level 100 (without dying) and you win. So in theory, I could start at floor 0, raise it to floor 97, and die. Then, the CPU can go ahead in, and starts where I left off at Floor 97. As you can see, this can make or break a run by a lot. With this knowledge, I probably played the minigame for six hours total in the weeks leading up to Octathlon, and it paid off! Before I got to the minigame, the CPU got there and raised it to floor 25, which is why when I started I was already at floor 25. From there, everything went perfect, and it really made MP7 be the best run it could have been.

2. The Comeback to end all comebacks (Mario Party 5)

After 15 hours of Mario Party, I thought I would be relieved to be on MP5. And then it decided to fuck me hard. The first board took me way too long, and while the second one started promising, it quickly delved into a nightmare. For some explanation, the object of MP5 is to make all the koopa kids lose their coins while keeping coins yourself. By beating them in minigames, you cause them to lose coins. I already knocked out Red and blue Koopa Kid, leaving only Green left. And then green kept kicking my ass in minigames. It got to the point where I had 6 coins, and he had 49. At that point, I decided that the comeback was real. And boy was it ever. I began a minigame tear which resulted in me finally winning the board. I'm so glad it did too, cause this was the moment I almost dropped out of the octathlon myself.

1. The last few minutes (Mario Party 8)

Of course the number one spot had to go to when I finally ended the whole freaking thing. I began a small speech once i knew I had won the Bowser board, and while I choked a little in the final minigame, it was all good as I finally finished. I am so proud of this moment, and I'm glad I did it. Honestly, just watch.
