- After the opening day defeat to villa, anti-Wenger sentiment was the highest it's ever been. Fans, media, press, journos all calling him out saying his time was up.
- At the same time is the issue of AW's new contract. What would the reaction have been if the board had offered him a new contract then? Ridicule of course.
- Wenger dilly dallied all summer, unable to close a deal. Higuain, Suarez etc. Fans were pissed that we'd only signed an injured postman from Ligue 2. The board need to swing fan support back in favour of AW in order for any new contract to be accepted by fans.
- Final few days of the window, the opportunity arises to snatch Ozil from Madrid who need to recoup some money from the Bale deal. Fed up with Wenger's pissing about, the board tell AW that the deal will be forced through. No pissing about, haggling over price. £42m, it's done. Of course, there's no way this version of events can be leaked to the press for fear of "Arsenal in managerial meltdown" headlines.
- The deal is dressed up as being all Arsene's doing. He personally phoned Ozil we're told. Maybe he did, maybe he didn't. None of us can ever know for sure.
- Suddenly, all the fans are happy again. It's all "One Arsene Wenger", look what a great manager he is, he's changed, he's finally making big signings etc...
- Meanwhile, Kroenke, IG & co can slap a new contract on the table for Wenger and nobody has a problem at all if he signs it. We're doing well in the league after all.
- When Wenger signs the new contract, on we go with more of the same for three more years. SK, board and co are happy because Wenger's making them a shitload of money...
