Gnome-alsamixer sound tests

RE: sound at login no sound after Ubuntu loads (internal speaker)

With ext speakers connected via headphone jack.
With youtube playing.

Headphone jack sound controls are :

Master
Headphone
PCM

With ext speakers removed from headphone jack
Ie. leaving only the internal speaker:

At no point does sound emerge from the internal speaker.
(obviously tried muted unmuted auto-muted etc. etc.)

(I thought this was going to be it!..... but no.)

With auto-mute unchecked:
I inserted speaker into headphone jack,
On gnome-alsamixer, the 'speaker channel' auto muted!!!!!

Is that significant?

Rmoving the jackplug unmutes 'speakers' and volume goes to max (no sound)

Of the above, we do not know which controls the internal speaker.
At the moment.... none of them do.
