- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: yeah nah that is really cool I actually kinda want to make that jacket now]
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: I'll do that after the $2,000 Gaming PC and a car I guess]
- <Dis> what parts are you getting to be spending 2k?
- <Damarus[Dusk]> ^ *
- <Mask[Ethan]> (back)
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: I'm not sure yet it's just that most of my research tells me that it's gonna be in that range :U 16GB RAM, GTX GeForce 980, hoping to go with 1440p]
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: but like I don't know shit about a lot of this so research is still happening]
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: I was gonna get a Titan (I forget the random associated letters, sue me) but basically everyone told me that most games don't even come close to needing it and it was like, 1,000 bucks so]
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: oh here we go, Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan X.]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Do you have a 1440p monitor?
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: I don't I'm gonna get one]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> .. also yeah dont bother with the titan x for now
- <Damarus[Dusk]> 980 TI
- <Damarus[Dusk]> better price per preformance
- <Damarus[Dusk]> You dont need a 12gb frame buffer
- <Damarus[Dusk]> By the time you do the clockspeed will be the bottleneck on that card
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Dont need 16gb of memory for gaming either
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: basically my plan is to replace everything I have right now with a newer shiner thing because it's all stuff I bought on the cheap/5 years old]
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: oh? Alright]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> CPU all depends on if you plan on overclocking it or not
- <Damarus[Dusk]> If you are, get a K series, as they're unlocked chips
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: I mean I don't plan on it :u knowing me I'd damage something]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Like a 4770k or 4790k (i have that one)
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Even if you're not, those cards have decent clockspeeds and hyperthreading
- <Damarus[Dusk]> i5's generally dont have hyperthreading
- <Damarus[Dusk]> But are ok for gaming -now- but not totally amazing for workstation use.
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Don't bother with 6/8 cores for now either, as games aren't using them yet.
- <Damarus[Dusk]> As for a mobo. Get one with features you want, other than that it doesn't matter as long as it has the right compatability with the chip
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: well, how many hoops do you have to jump through to upgrade a processor?]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> The only one really being if you plan on going intel or amd (hint. go intel)
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: oh yeah nah I already decided on Intel]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Basically, pick a CPU first
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: like the first thing I read said "AMD processors suck buy Intel"]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> then pick a mobo with that chipset
- <Damarus[Dusk]> If you do ever plan to upgrade (if by the time you upgrade they're even still using the same chipsets, (x99, z97 etc)
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Then all you'd need to do is make sure the chip follows that board.
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: oh shit really? Just stick it in and update the drivers?]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> If not you'd need a new board too. which is what i had to do when i went from my i7 820 to the 4g i7 4790k
- <Damarus[Dusk]> CPU doesnt need drivers
- <Damarus[Dusk]> You'll probably need to flash the bios though, but that's normally a piece of piss nowdays
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: ... :U I knew that]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Especially if you're going gaming? Look into the asus ROG motherboards
- <Damarus[Dusk]> They have a usb flashback button on the back
- <Damarus[Dusk]> literally just stick the stick in, press the button, done.
- <Damarus[Dusk]> bios flashed
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: okay alright sounds good. Probably won't get an 8 core processor]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Memory you dont need to worry about the speeds of
- <Damarus[Dusk]> I have 1333 and it does me fine
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: yeah uh quick question]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> The differences in actual preformances from the speeds are negligble
- <Damarus[Dusk]> so dont worry too much
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: what is the difference between memory, storage and the hard drive?]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Just get a reliable brand, hyperx, corsair
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Memory is your RAM
- <Damarus[Dusk]> storage is your hard drive
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: because I'm a retard and those all sound like the same thing to me]
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: ... OH]
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: okay]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> If you're gaming on it? Get a decent SSd
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: yeah alright people were just using different words for it]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Intel series are good, samsung are good, i have a crucial 512gb
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Which are cheap but good
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Then just get a decent storage mechanical drive
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: alrighty]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> western digital are a decent brand. Get a black if possible
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Green are ok, but generally a bit slower, but not too bad really for gaming, you wont really notice
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: uuuuh I have around 500GB on this computer and it's almost full, do they make SSDs with more than that?]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> SSD you pretty much just want your OS and a few regular games on
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Then have the rest of the games on the main storage hard drive, which would be a mechanical disk drive
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Rather than solid state
- * Damarus[Dusk] has a 3TB drive for his games, another 2 drives for movies/music/files, and the SSD for OS and regular apps
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: oh okay :u so, it would just be another drive like C: but it's not C:]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Yeah basically
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: and it's always in the computer]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> C will be your OS drive, so your SSD.
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: RIGHT okay]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> And the other drive you can just format to whatever letter
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Like, i have mine as G: for games
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: see this is all so much less confusing than I thought]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> It's pretty simple really
- <Damarus[Dusk]> For motherboards? ROG line is pretty decent
- <Damarus[Dusk]> I have a maximus hero 7
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Mainly because i wanted the better sound chip, red colour scheme (yay asthetics) and the better ethernet.
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: oh dude I saw that one and almost decided to get it for the fucking name alone. Luckily I'm not stupid so I didn't do that but still]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> It's a good board, expensive, but if you want the shit on it it's built well
- <Damarus[Dusk]> But, really. As long as it takes what you want it's good
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: I dunno I'm not really gonna overclock and I dunno what else it does so I prooobably just wanna go cheaper]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Also, make sure if you do get a board what memory it takes, as newer boards are moving to DDR4
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: DDR4?]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> DDR3 is fine, but in the future it'll mostly be DDR4
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Basically faster RAM
- <Damarus[Dusk]> But, honestly it doesnt matter much for gaming
- <Damarus[Dusk]> 8gb of a decent brand is fine
- <Damarus[Dusk]> If you can, go for dual channel, so 2x4gb sticks, (most boards have 4 slots so you could add another 8gb later)
- <Damarus[Dusk]> (and stick with the same brand too)
- <Damarus[Dusk]> As for case, just go for whatever size and cooling options you want.
- <Damarus[Dusk]> And things like front pannel options, number of usb ports and shit
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Fans, noctua are a good brand, corsair another good brand, coolermaster too
- <Damarus[Dusk]> For CPU cooling, decide if you want waterblock or air cooled.
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Waterblock gets better preformance, but more points for failure
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: yeah, just gonna go aircooled. Watercooling seems :U like more than I need and more than I'm capible of not fucking up]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> (Also, unless you want to really fuck around with it, get an all in one, otherwise you have to then sort out your own watercooling loops, reserviors, pumps, sockets, plates etc)
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Noctua do good aircooled heatsinks
- <Damarus[Dusk]> But, yeah, work out your parts size first, then get a case to match
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: is the heatsink a seperate part? I figured it'd come with the MB/cooling system]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> GTX 980ti are quite long, so small form factor cases could be a bit iffy
- <Damarus[Dusk]> You -do- get a stock cooler with most CPUS. But they're a bit crap
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: nah man I'm getting a big motherboard]
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: and a big case]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Right, then you might not have any issue
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: I want my black tower to be large]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Also, work out your power supply
- <Damarus[Dusk]> There's things online to work out your exact power usage
- <Mask[Ethan]> uno momento
- <Damarus[Dusk]> But for those sorts of parts? Go 650w minimum
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Corsair again do good PSU's
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Also work out if you want modular, semi modular, or all in one cabling
- <Damarus[Dusk]> modular gives more space options and better cable management by far.
- <Damarus[Dusk]> But slightly more expensive
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Though depending on what type you get probably wont be sleeved cables, so making it look better might need a bit of fiddling to get it looking pretty. Corsairs are nice and thin though so easy to route
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Also they're black if you want it to colour match
- <Damarus[Dusk]> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jDXbYuNf_s&index=6&list=PL8mG-RkN2uTwlcLU_rv29Gt4578XfgJm_
- <Damarus[Dusk]> 's a good channel to work out the sort of builds and such you might be interested in
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Also if you're going multiple screens at 1080p or higher, might want to look at SLI for your cards.
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: I hath returned]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Also, for GPU, work out if you like nvidia or AMD.. which.. AMD tends to be a bit cheaper but nvidia is better.. and if you're going to be spending up to 2k, get a 980ti
- <Damarus[Dusk]> It's just better
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: oh fuck no this AMD has given me nothing but trouble and my old Nvidia worked like a reliable farm horse]
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: Nvidia it is]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Also
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Aftermarket cards tend to work better than stock GPUs
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: ...I dunno the difference (._. ) I']
- <Damarus[Dusk]> If you go for an asus board, get an asus card, the 980ti Strix DCU3 edition should be good
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: I'm starting to see what Aristotle meant]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Basically, "stock nvidia or branded"
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: so like, Made by Nvidia or just produced/funded by Nvidia?]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> So like, an asus 980ti / EVGA 980ti etc tend to have different things like turboboost and overclock options on the GPU (Easy overlocking)
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Different cooling on it too
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Like, the stock nvidia cards have an internal to external venting just kinda bogstandard
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Strix cards have 3 fans, giant heatpipes etc
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Generally, they just run better and cooler.
- <Damarus[Dusk]> And have better overclock options
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Like oneclick overclocks.
- <Damarus[Dusk]> And asus ones run quieter if you care about that.
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: nah not really]
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: between "works better" and "works quieter" I'm going with the former]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> ... you know, you can have both
- <Damarus[Dusk]> More fans and better overall cooling = quieter.
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Better overall cooling = less thermal throttling = works better
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Also plan your cooling for airflow, if you want it intake > outake, make sure it has the right pressure otherwise you'll be drawing dust into the system.
- <Damarus[Dusk]> If you get an aftermarket cooler like a much larger heatsink, get static pressure based fans for that
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Airflow fans tend to be quieter, and are good for intake
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Or passive cooling
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Also if you want easy control of your fans, could look into a fan controller for that
- <Damarus[Dusk]> If you dont plan on getting too many fans, you should be ok with using the fan headers on the motherboard
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: you need fan control? o.o this thing I have now has always worked without it]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Well, i mean, if you care about that
- <Damarus[Dusk]> So you can tweak the RPM, noise, cooling etc.
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Some motherboards have fan controllers built in, like the hero 7
- <Damarus[Dusk]> So i can tweak mine from silent to full speed in the OS
- <Damarus[Dusk]> But if you want it quick and easy from the front of the case
- <Damarus[Dusk]> a fan controller can route that so you can just turn a dial on the front
- <Damarus[Dusk]> And if you get more fans than your board has ports for, you'll either need something like a pwm splitter that just routes onto a power cable and runs it full speed
- <Damarus[Dusk]> or a controller so you can adjust it
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: :U I think I'll look into that at some point. Right now I just want to focus on a nice machine that covers the basics, if I do overclocking and watercooling and shit now it's just gonna overwhelm me]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> I mean, i've not OC'ed mine yet
- <Damarus[Dusk]> But it's good to have the option later, but i want to get a better cooler before I do.
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Cus, stock cooling is kinda shite.
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: then again I have like 4 months to absorb the information so like I dunno]
- * Damarus[Dusk] nods
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Basically, look at budget and price per preformance
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: I mean my budget is "I'm going to keep saving money until I have enough for all the stuff I want"]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Main things to concentrate on are graphics, and CPU
- <Damarus[Dusk]> My CPU (4790k) was.. 350 i think, or 250..
- <Damarus[Dusk]> http://www.microcenter.com/product/434176/core_i7-4790k_40ghz_lga_1150_boxed_processor that'n
- <Damarus[Dusk]> 270
- <Damarus[Dusk]> http://www.amazon.com/1150-ASUS-Maximus-VII-Motherboard/dp/B00K8MUTMO that board

- <Damarus[Dusk]> good storage drive
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Also.
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Black friday and cyber monday
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Buy shit then
- <Damarus[Dusk]> You can basically take a 1/3 off those prices at least
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: ooh nice]
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: ... I dunno that's like 2 months longer than I want to wait >.>; I might]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Considering the cash you can save
- <Damarus[Dusk]> You'd probably be able to get a better monitor
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Or more monitors.
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Maybe even get another 980ti and sli it for surround gaming
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: ...that is a good point]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> But yeah, the cash you'll save, just wait the extra time
- <Damarus[Dusk]> 's why i went and bought all the shit in the US on black friday
- <Damarus[Dusk]> I saved about £300, so 461 dollars.
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Also got a 5tb external drive for like $70
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: jesus christ]
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: o_o]
- <Damarus[Dusk]> xactly
- * GM has quit (Quit: Bye)
- <Damarus[Dusk]> http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OBRE5UE/ref=psdc_1292116011_t3_B00IF4NGXQ 's a good ssd
- <Damarus[Dusk]> and if you only want it for the OS, can probably drop to a 250 and save $80
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: should I get one 8GB stick to start with or two 4GB?]
- <Mask[Ethan]> [Corgi: I'm thinking 1 8GB]
- * GM (GM@50.11.oq.mnk) has joined
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Depends on price, how likely you are to update it, and how many slots
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Generally, dual channel is a little better
- * You are now known as Corgi
- <Corgi> well the hero has like 4 slots right?
- <Corgi> ...nah actually if I need an upgrade really bad and I have 4 4GB installed I can just take them all out what am I thinking
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Thing is, by black friday, recomended cpu/mobos for the price might have changed
- <Damarus[Dusk]> and will probably be ddr4
- <Damarus[Dusk]> But, yeah, make a list, then just recheck it when it comes closer to the time, see if prices have gone down etc.
- <Damarus[Dusk]> budget and plan for -now- then you have an idea if things adjust in a few months time
- <Corgi> yis
- <Corgi> you know what power supply you have?
- <Damarus[Dusk]> 650rm corsair
- <Corgi> uuuh this?
- <Corgi> https://pcpartpicker.com/part/corsair-power-supply-cmpsu650txv2
- <Damarus[Dusk]> If you go for an SLI card, maybe look into a 750
- <Damarus[Dusk]> 's a tx
- <Damarus[Dusk]> http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-80PLUS-Gold-Certified-Power-Supply/dp/B00EB7UIRS/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1433895732&sr=1-1&keywords=rm+650
- <Damarus[Dusk]> that's what i have

- <Corgi> the links are the same but I found the upgrade you're talking about :U
- <Corgi> and right now I guess Newegg or someone has it cheaper than the old version
- <Corgi> what cooler?
- <Corgi> Sorry I'm making a list of the shit you have/recomend for later
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Atm im just on a stock cpu cooler, but i plan on getting a noctua big block cooler
- <Damarus[Dusk]> http://www.amazon.com/Noctua-NH-D15-Premium-Cooler-Cooling/dp/B00L7UZMAK/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1433895947&sr=1-3&keywords=noctua+cooler
- <Damarus[Dusk]> like that
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Though, again that's something i need to properlly look into sizing for
- <Damarus[Dusk]> And position of things like memory
- <Damarus[Dusk]> there's always things that could be changed though
- <Damarus[Dusk]> http://www.amazon.com/Noctua-Heatpipe-Bearing-NH-C12P-SE14/dp/B003JME1CO/ref=sr_1_11?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1433895947&sr=1-11&keywords=noctua+cooler like that if the memory is too close to the cpu
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Raises the block so it can fit
- <Corgi> what's your GPU? 980 Ti?
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Oh, no, not got the cash for that yet
- <Damarus[Dusk]> And, my card is getting saught after so the prices aren't the greatest to compare against
- <Damarus[Dusk]> but it's a 760 asus dcu2
- <GM[Twi]> Today I learned I forgot how to jumprope
- <Damarus[Dusk]> http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00DBPKEOI?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00 this one
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Out of stock, so hence why it's not the best comparison
- <Corgi> is the case super important? Or is it just a "get one that works" sorta deal
- <GM[Twi]> A good case can last you through several computers
- <Damarus[Dusk]> ^
- <Damarus[Dusk]> As i said earlier, just get something that'll fit stuff you need
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Looks nice
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Has the front ports n shit you want
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Decent build quality
- <GM[Twi]> Yeah
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Enough cooling that you want
- * Damarus[Dusk] has a coolermaster CM storm 2
- <Damarus[Dusk]> http://www.amazon.co.uk/CM-Advanced-Enclosure-External-Internal/dp/B00A7JBK80/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1433896370&sr=1-1&keywords=coolermaster+cm+storm+2 this one
- <GM[Twi]> It's not super important, but get one you like and you can trade out parts until they stop making parts for the form factor.
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Jesus
- <Damarus[Dusk]> price went up £30
- <Corgi> :U aaaaand the Damarus Build is complete
- <Corgi> ish
- <Corgi> close enough
- <Corgi> for reference
- <GM[Twi]> Drunk robots https://www.facebook.com/DeusEx/videos/827549117298438/
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Well, apart from the 3 extra hard drives i have
- * Damarus[Dusk] has a 1.5, 2, and 3tb WD green drives along with the crucial ssd.
- <Corgi> jesus
- <Corgi> I'm saving this all as a Pastebin anyway so fuckit I'll maybe add them later maybe not
- <Damarus[Dusk]> (also have a 3 and the 5tb externals i mentioned earlier)
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Oh, also, if you dont already have one, get a 360 wireless adaptor.
- <Corgi> :U like the controller?
- <Damarus[Dusk]> And if you want to make it neat, and have an extra USB2 header, get an internal usb header, stick a hub in there, and have it inside hooked up to a hard drive cage or something, makes it nice and clean
- <Corgi> oh not like the controller
- * Siouxsie has quit (Quit: Leaving)
- <Corgi> jeeeeesus thanks for all the help :u I feel like 95% less lost now
- <Damarus[Dusk]> Np
