  45.
  46. Hi Teddy, I hope this will explain why I cannot answer your questions. Feel
  47. free to share it with your group.
  48.
  49. MY RETIREMENT
  50.
  51.
  52. *Is the rumor true?*
  53.
  54.
  55.
  56. Yes, it is true. I, Marc Laidlaw, have retired from Valve.
  57.
  58.
  59.
  60. *Was there really a rumor to that effect?*
  61.
  62.
  63.
  64. Not to my knowledge. I just thought that in case there was one, I might as
  65. well start by confirming it. Most of my friends already know because I told
  66. them directly.
  67.
  68.
  69.
  70. *What do you mean you're retiring from Valve?*
  71.
  72.
  73.
  74. I am no longer a full or part time Valve employee, no longer involved in
  75. day to day decisions or operations, no longer a spokesman for the company,
  76. no longer privy to most types of confidential information, no longer
  77. working on Valve games in any capacity.
  78.
  79.
  80.
  81. *Why are you retiring?*
  82.
  83.
  84.
  85. There are many reasons, most of them personal. An outwardly obvious reason
  86. is that I'm old, or anyway oldish. My nickname when I first started at
  87. Valve in 1997 was "Old Man Laidlaw." The little baby level designer who
  88. gave me that nickname is older now than I was then. Imagine how much older
  89. I am! I had the unbelievable luck to fall in with the kids at Valve when
  90. they could have just dismissed me as an old fogey who didn't know shit
  91. about videogames. The only Zelda I=E2=80=99d ever heard of was F. Scott
  92. Fitzgerald=E2=80=99s wife. They taught me everything. I had a good run but =
  93. lately I
  94. have been feeling a need for a break from the collaborative chaos of game
  95. production, and a return to more self-directed writing projects.
  96.
  97.
  98.
  99. *What does this mean for Half-Life?*
  100.
  101.
  102.
  103. I don't and can't entirely know. Half-Life is fully owned by Valve. It came
  104. into existence before my arrival. Where Valve may choose to take it in the
  105. future is not in my hands. I have been a grateful co-creator, but my time
  106. of working on the series is behind me. Since I no longer speak for Valve,
  107. it would be inappropriate for me to answer questions or speculate openly on
  108. the fate of the franchise. I can speak about games I worked on in the past,
  109. to the extent this is public knowledge, but I have talked about those
  110. subjects endlessly over the years and I don't think there's much to add.
  111.
  112.
  113.
  114. *Will you have any kind of continuing relationship with Valve?*
  115.
  116.
  117.
  118. Valve has been my second home, and home to a great many of my dreams and
  119. ambitions, for over 18 years. I will always have a connection to the
  120. company, the many friends I made there, the games I worked on, and
  121. especially the characters I helped create. My friends know they can consult
  122. me if questions come up that I can help them answer. I hope that for at
  123. least a few years, if I come to the door, people will still recognize me
  124. and let me in without calling security. I won't blame them if they hide the
  125. silverware, however. I can be trusted with company secrets, but not with
  126. spoons. Never with spoons.
  127.
  128.
  129.
  130. *What are you going to do now?*
  131.
  132.
  133.
  134. That is unclear. I will almost certainly get back to writing more stories
  135. of my own; that's simply my default setting. Working on games has been an
  136. amazing education, a vocation, an entire career I never expected to have. I
  137. found a calling that didn't even exist when I was a sprout. But it feels
  138. like the time is right to return to my roots and see where that takes me.
  139. It might well take me back into games by other routes, but currently that=
  140. =E2=80=99s
  141. not part of the plan. I=E2=80=99ll be exploring for a while.
  142.
  143.
  144.
  145. *Are you willing to do interviews or engage in further correspondence about
  146. all this?*
  147.
  148.
  149.
  150. Not at this time. For now, I am going to let this written statement stand
  151. as my complete comment on the matter. If it seems like there is something
  152. important I neglected to mention, or some world shattering new event that
  153. demands to be trumpeted, such as the arrival of a new grey hair, then I
  154. suppose I might update it. Those who write asking for further clarification
  155. or expanded explanations will probably just receive another copy of this
  156. message. I appreciate all the interest and enthusiasm from Half-Life fans
  157. over the years; I loved working on the games and engaging with the
  158. community, but I can no longer be considered a potential source of new
  159. information. And please don't bombard Valve with questions either. There is
  160. nothing anyone there can tell you about my personal decision to retire.
  161.
  162.
  163.
  164. *How do we know this email is not a fake?*
  165.
  166.
  167.
  168. Assuming the entire universe is not itself a hoax, this uncertainty arises
  169. mainly thanks to a small, specialized cottage industry of trolls who have
  170. been employed turning out fake emails in my name, in which I say things
  171. about Valve that I would never say. What you are reading is the genuine
  172. article, a hand-picked assortment of words selected and arranged in a
  173. particular, convoluted order for one specific purpose: to demonstrate that
  174. I and nobody else have or could have written this email. I expect that
  175. after enough identical versions of this message have been shared in the
  176. Steam forums, on Reddit, or wherever else gamers congregate, people will
  177. come to accept its authenticity, especially when I don=E2=80=99t contradict=
  178. them.
  179. So if you were planning to write to me directly asking whether it's real,
  180. please accept one of these preemptive replies: (a) Yes, it=E2=80=99s real. =
  181. (b)
  182. Nope, it=E2=80=99s not a fake. (c) Nope, it=E2=80=99s real. (d) Yes, it=E2=
  183. =80=99s not a fake.
  184.
  185.
  186.
  187. *How do we know if your explanation of how we know this email is not a
  188. fake, is not a fake?*
  189.
  190.
  191.
  192. Did trolls create this universe, or are they merely its creatures?
  193.
  194.
  195.
  196. Thank you for playing along.
  197.
