  1. "Come on Rin, it's easy!"
  2.
  3. "I know it is. I just don't want to do it."
  4.
  5. "But you said you would!" I pout at her. It's obvious that pouting doesn't phase her, but I just keep doing it out of instinct.
  6.
  7. "Yes. And I will," she says simply, "you won't stop asking about it."
  8.
  9. "Just this once, okay?" I chirp at her with a smile, as I take her foot in my hand.
  10.
  11. I take a sock in my other hand and deftly slide it around her foot, tugging it above her ankles to secure it in place.
  12.
  13. Rin makes a frown. "I still don't get it. Can't I just run in sandals?"
  14.
  15. I return her expression, "No way, Rin. You have to wear shoes when you run. No exceptions."
  16.
  17. Rin brightens up more and gives me a grin, "you don't have to wear shoes."
  18.
  19. I firmly punch her on the left shoe I just put her foot in, "Very funny," I say sternly. That was a low blow from her, but I guess she can't help it.
  20.
  21. I put on her right sock and shoe with as much effort as the last. I'm used to doing this with my own casual prosthetics, but this is the first time I've put them on real feet. This whole situation feels awkward. She'd better appreciate this.
  22.
  23. The shoes do look pretty nice on her, though, and they match the red color of the P.E. uniform I picked up for her yesterday, while wondering how she got herself excused from ever needing one before.
  24.
  25. I stand up, and proceed to show Rin how to stretch properly. She doesn't seem to mind stretching at all, but after the first step, she just starts stretching on her own. Raising her legs into the air, kicking them around, then stretching them into a wide 'V' shape. I don't stop her because it still counts as stretching. That, and the sight of it is cute to watch. I let her continue with her own thing as I start my usual stretching routine.
  26.
  27. After we finish, I start walking towards the track, motioning at Rin to follow. We pause at the center of the straightaway.
  28.
  29. I turn to her. "Okay, just run as long as you can, that's all you have to do."
  30.
  31. Rin doesn't respond. I hope she doesn't just stand there. I don't waste another moment, and begin to run down the track, looking over my shoulder. She begins to move forward, and breaks into a slow, haggard-looking jog. She's definitely not used to running, and it must be even harder without arms. I quickly consider what it would be like trying to run with my hands tied behind my back. Seems like a pain in the ass.
  32.
  33. I continue to round the track at my normal pace, Rin continues at hers. Soon enough, I can look over to the side and see Rin on the opposite end of the track. She's going as slow as before, but still going.
  34.
  35. "How is it, Rin?" I yell out to her. I see her mouth move but it doesn't seem like she bothered to shout it out. I shrug and continue on.
  36.
  37. As I approach her from behind, I notice she has now stopped completely. She turns toward me as I come close and stop next to her.
  38.
  39. "Tired. I said tired earlier. Also, sweaty. I don't think I want to do this." Rin shakes her head around, a couple of drops of sweat flinging off her hair.
  40.
  41. I sigh. I just want to yank her by the... sleeve and pull her through another couple of laps, but I decide to drop it. With the odd outfit change and the act of dragging her out here in the first place, I feel like I pushed her enough for today. I consider how much she doesn't really seem to get around in her daily life. From what she's told me, when she's not in class she mostly just spends time in her dorm room, working on her art.
  42.
  43. She definitely needs to exercise, she shouldn't just be sitting on her ass all the time. As her voluntary caretaker, I can't allow it. I'll have to try to get her out here again, some day in the future.
  44.
  45. "All right then Rin, it's good that you tried anyway. Go ahead and rest on the bleachers, we'll go shower after I finish my runs."
  46. Rin nods in response and walks off the track. I resume my running, quickly speeding up to a nice pace. As I turn a corner, I look over at Rin in the distance. Oddly enough, she's looking right back at me. I glance again a little further down the straightaway, and her eyes are still following as I go. It seems a little off-putting, considering her typical aloof gazes.
  47.
  48. "Hey!" I shout at her, waving my hand, "enjoying the view?"
  49.
  50. I see Rin's mouth move, but once again, it doesn't sound like she wants to yell it in response. I continue on without a hitch, still taking a peek back at her every half lap or so. She's still watching. Even if she's not running with me, it feels nice to have someone watch.
  51.
  52. I finish my laps in what felt like a shorter time than usual, thanks in part to a bit of me wanting to show off to my new attentive friend. I do a lap of slow jogging to cool down, then make my way over to Rin on the bottom plank of the bleachers.
  53.
  54. "You're pretty good at running, looks like," she says as she looks up at me. "That's what I said earlier."
  55.
  56. "Oh? You think so?" I say back to her with a smile of gratitude.
  57.
  58. "Yeah. Well, I don't know, but I don't think I've seen something move that fast, that wasn't a car or a train. Or an airplane. Or a bullet." Rin blinks slowly, shaking off her thoughts with a tilt of her head. "The fastest human I've seen, definitely."
  59.
  60. I chuckle at her commentary, feeling empowered by her off-kilter compliment. "Just takes practice. Anyone can run well if they keep at it."
  61.
  62. "No," Rin responds promptly, shutting her eyes, in deep thought. "It's more than that, I think. It looks like you're a ray of light that just shoots out without interruption when the switch is flipped. It's like you're a different person, but maybe not. Maybe more of a person. More you, more Emi."
  63.
  64. A look of confusion fills my face, but I can only take that as a heartfelt comment, "I never looked at that quite like that," I lean towards her and give her a grin, "but I think you're right. Running makes me feel more like myself. It makes me feel free."
  65.
  66. I stand up straight once again and take a step back, "Anyway, we should hurry and go shower if we want to make it to class on time." As Rin gets up and follows, I wink at her, "feel free to come watch me any morning you want, Rin."
  67.
  68. Over the past few days, I've gotten used to helping Rin in the mornings, helping her clean and dress herself. There are a few points of her hygiene that I haven't had to deal with yet, but I'm ready to cross those bridges when we get to them. It helps that Rin's already very used to whatever I may need to do for her, so there really should be no problem.
  69.
  70. It's another typical showering session this morning. I help Rin out of her P.E. clothing before stripping myself. I grab the sponge and start working on cleaning her.
  71.
  72. "Hey uh... Emi," Rin says slowly, breaking me out of my own idle thoughts.
  73.
  74. "What is it, Rin?" I respond, tilting my head to the side to look at her face's profile.
  75.
  76. "I need something else today." She's looking down and fidgeting. "I'm really itchy."
  77.
  78. I make a small frown of confusion. "Itchy? Where?"
  79.
  80. "It's not... I..." Her head is swaying side to side now. "I want to just say it but I think you'd be uncomfortable. But I have to ask. I need contact, between my legs, but I can't reach. Can you do it for me?"
  81.
  82. My jaw proves that the act of it dropping is not a metaphor. Not just from her sudden request, but from the way she put it so awkwardly, yet clearly. I manage to collect myself. "N-no! Do it your-" I stop myself, glancing at her partial upper arms. That's right... how would she do it herself? I recall again the first time I saw her, straddled over her nightstand. It didn't seem like a very comfortable, or hygienic, way of going about it. Still, I can't actually do that for her, can I?
  83.
  84. "Do it my what?" Rin's words snap me partially back to reality. Her head is turned now, her deep turquoise eyes looking directly at mine.
  85.
  86. "Y-your what?" I stammer in confusion.
  87.
  88. "You were saying something."
  89.
  90. "Oh! Right." Okay, fully back in reality now. I take another moment to come up with an answer for her. If I wait too much longer, this situation is only going to get more unsettling. I force a stern look at her. "I'm sorry, I can't do that for you, Rin."
  91.
  92. Rin simply nods and turns her head forward again, "Okay." She seems to be having much less trouble with this situation. Maybe she just wanted to ask, although she might be hiding her disappointment.
  93.
  94. Why me, though? For the convenience? Can't she find someone more suited to that? A boyfriend, maybe? I'm not sure if Rin's even the type to be able to pick up guys, or if she even likes guys.
  95.
  96. It's only now that I feel the heat in my cheeks and realize I've been blushing for the past few minutes.
  97.
  98. With some shame, I decide to dodge her crotch during the cleaning process. She doesn't call me out on it, luckily.
