  19. New Study: Linux Adoption Trends 2012: A Survey of Enterprise End Users
  20. =3D=3D=3D
  21.
  22. The Linux Foundation's latest report =E2=80=9CLinux Adoption Trends 2012: A
  23. Survey of Enterprise End Users=E2=80=9D has been released. The survey and
  24. resulting study share new data representing Linux=E2=80=99s dominant role =
  25. in
  26. supporting cloud computing, =E2=80=9CBig Data=E2=80=9D and =E2=80=9Cgreenf=
  27. ield=E2=80=9D
  28. deployments.
  29.
  30. The data in the report reflects the results of the second invitation-only
  31. survey of The Linux Foundation=E2=80=99s Enterprise End User Council, as w=
  32. ell
  33. as other companies and government organizations. The first Enterprise
  34. Linux report was released in October 2010.
  35.
  36. This year=E2=80=99s survey was conducted in partnership with Yeoman Technol=
  37. ogy
  38. Group late last year and received responses from nearly 1900 individuals.
  39. Like the 2010 report, it filters the data to surface trends among the
  40. world=E2=80=99s largest enterprise companies and government organizations =
  41. =E2=80=93
  42. identified by 428 respondents at organizations with $500 million or more
  43. in annual revenues or greater than 500 employees. The number of
  44. respondents from the largest enterprises in the world grew by more than
  45. 10% this year, providing an even better picture of enterprise Linux
  46. adoption trends.
  47.
  48. The 2012 Enterprise Linux survey shows that affinity among new and
  49. veteran Linux users continues to increase at the expense of Windows and
  50. Unix. Part of this growth is due to Linux=E2=80=99s role in two of today=
  51. =E2=80=99s
  52. biggest IT trends: supporting the increasing level of =E2=80=9CBig Data=E2=
  53. =80=9D and
  54. achieving productivity and security gains with virtualization and cloud
  55. computing. Enterprise Linux users show steady progress on all of these
  56. fronts and a clear preference for Linux as the foundation for these
  57. trends.

  69. 2012 Event and Linux Training Schedule Released
  70. =3D=3D=3D
  71.
  72. The Linux Foundation has released its 2012 event and onsite Linux
  73. training schedule. It is also opening the Call for Presentations (CFPs)
  74. for its remaining 2012 event lineup, which includes LinuxCon conferences
  75. in North America, Japan and Europe.
  76.
  77. LinuxCon North America will take place this year in San Diego,
  78. California, where it will be co-located with the Linux Plumbers
  79. Conference and exclusive Linux Kernel Summit. Hosting these events
  80. together in one location ensures the brightest minds in Linux are
  81. together in one place to advance the state of the art in the Linux
  82. platform. LinuxCon Europe, which debuted to a sold out crowd in Prague in
  83. 2011, will be in Barcelona, Spain this year. Embedded Linux Conference
  84. Europe and KVM Forum will also take place in Barcelona. LinuxCon Japan
  85. returns to Yokohama.
  86.
  87. The Linux Foundation has also designed an annual event-specific Linux
  88. training schedule to help attendees maximize their educational
  89. experiences onsite. The Linux Foundation=E2=80=99s courses are designed to=
  90. give
  91. attendees hands-on experience and the advanced technical skills needed to
  92. thrive in their careers today. With all indicators showing an increasing
  93. demand for Linux talent, this program helps prepare new and veteran

  157. Jim Zemlin's Blog: HP Releases More Details on the Open Sourcing of
  158. webOS
  159. =3D=3D=3D
  160.
  161. HP recently announced more details on its contribution of the webOS
  162. platform to the open source community. I find these details and the
  163. timeline associated with the release to be positive developments, both
  164. for Linux and for the wider mobile markets.
  165.
  166. The webOS stack represents a rich set of components that combined
  167. together create a comprehensive platform for mobile devices. The
  168. highlight of the announcement has to be the open sourcing of Enyo, the
  169. application framework for webOS. This is a powerful framework that app
  170. developers can use to build applications that will work across different
  171. platforms including iOS, Android, webOS and so on.
  172.
  173. Companies announce open sourcing products and projects all the time.
  174. There are several decisions HP executives made in this process that I
  175. think signal they are on the right track...

  218. 13-Year Software Veteran Learns New Tricks with Embedded Linux Course
  219. =3D=3D=3D
  220.
  221. We recently had the opportunity to talk to a Linux developer and user who
  222. attended one of The Linux Foundation's Linux training courses while
  223. attending LinuxCon and the 20th Anniversary of Linux Gala. Derald Woods
  224. is a 13-year software veteran who shared with us why he values
  225. professional development today more than ever:
  226.
  227. Derald works in software development, designing and supporting electronic
  228. vehicle controls for heavy equipment and trucks. Lately, his time is
  229. being used to work on an ARM9-based embedded Linux solution that involves
  230. NTSC/PAL video CSI input, V4L2 overlay, and graphics provided by an SDL
  231. implementation.
  232.
  233. This work led him to The Linux Foundation's "Embedded Linux: A Crash
  234. Course" to dig in deeper and build upon his existing knowledge in this
  235. area.
  236.
  237. "I have had embedded Linux training from other sources, but this was an
  238. opportunity to ask questions and discuss some approaches that I have
  239. taken in the process of maintaining my own embedded Linux environment. It
  240. was good that the other class participants were also experienced Linux
  241. developers. We were able to pinpoint our specific needs and pull from the
  242. instructor's background. The instructor was a seasoned and experienced
  243. professional who actually has helped to deliver real solutions. He was
  244. able to sense the needs of the class and tailor the time spent toward
  245. those needs."
  246.
  247. In addition to the instructor's depth of knowledge, Derald said that the
  248. Linux training offered an opportunity to learn from other developers and
  249. engineers who deal with problems similar to his own. He says the biggest
  250. reason he chose this course from The Linux Foundation is because of the
  251. organization's neutral position and alignment with the Linux development
  252. community.
  253.
  254. "I wanted to be sure that the information received was from a group that
  255. has some exposure to Linux at an intimate level."
  256.
  257. Derald was able to maximize his Linux training investment by taking
  258. "Embedded Linux: A Crash Course" while attending LinuxCon North America
  259. in Vancouver, B.C.
  260.
  261. "The combination of the Embedded Linux training and the LinuxCon event
  262. provided a unique opportunity to get a full open source experience. I am
  263. usually the only person in the room who has gone beyond the high-level
  264. interactions with Linux code. At LinuxCon North America, everyone was
  265. like me to some degree. That was very refreshing."
  266.
  267. As for the learning experiences in the LinuxCon sessions, Derald says
  268. that the sessions were very good. "They gave me some perspective on how
  269. open source projects are managed," he added.
  270.
  271. "Being in the same room with kernel maintainers was an interesting
  272. experience. Once you realize that they are actually 'human' beings and
  273. not 'mystical' beings, the big picture starts to unfold. They need our
  274. help with testing, validation, and occasionally a good idea."
  275.

  481. <p style=3D"color: #333;"><span style=3D"font-size: 12px;">The data in the=

  495. <p style=3D"color: #333;"><span style=3D"font-size: 12px;">The 2012 Enterp=

  711. Derald Woods" />We recently had the opportunity to talk to a Linux develope=
  712. r and user who attended one of The Linux Foundation's Linux training course=
  713. s while attending LinuxCon and the 20th Anniversary of Linux Gala. Derald W=
  714. oods is a 13-year software veteran who shared with us why he values profess=
  715. ional development today more than ever: </span></p>
  716. <p style=3D"color: #333;"><span style=3D"font-size: 12px;">Derald works in=
  717. software development, designing and supporting electronic vehicle controls=
  718. for heavy equipment and trucks. Lately, his time is being used to work on =
  719. an ARM9-based embedded Linux solution that involves NTSC/PAL video CSI inpu=
  720. t, V4L2 overlay, and graphics provided by an SDL implementation. </span></p>
  721. <p style=3D"color: #333;"><span style=3D"font-size: 12px;">This work led h=
  722. im to The Linux Foundation's "Embedded Linux: A Crash Course" to dig in dee=
  723. per and build upon his existing knowledge in this area. </span></p>
  724. <p style=3D"color: #333333; padding-left: 30px;"><em><span style=3D"font-s=
  725. ize: 12px;">"I have had embedded Linux training from other sources, but thi=
  726. s was an opportunity to ask questions and discuss some approaches that I ha=
  727. ve taken in the process of maintaining my own embedded Linux environment. I=
  728. t was good that the other class participants were also experienced Linux de=
  729. velopers. We were able to pinpoint our specific needs and pull from the ins=
  730. tructor's background. The instructor was a seasoned and experienced profess=
  731. ional who actually has helped to deliver real solutions. He was able to sen=
  732. se the needs of the class and tailor the time spent toward those needs." </=
  733. span></em></p>
  734. <p style=3D"color: #333;"><span style=3D"font-size: 12px;">In addition to =
  735. the instructor's depth of knowledge, Derald said that the Linux training of=
  736. fered an opportunity to learn from other developers and engineers who deal =
  737. with problems similar to his own. He says the biggest reason he chose this =
  738. course from The Linux Foundation is because of the organization's neutral p=
  739. osition and alignment with the Linux development community. </span></p>
  740. <p style=3D"color: #333333; padding-left: 30px;"><em><span style=3D"font-s=
  741. ize: 12px;">"I wanted to be sure that the information received was from a g=
  742. roup that has some exposure to Linux at an intimate level." </span></em></p>
  743. <p style=3D"color: #333;"><span style=3D"font-size: 12px;">Derald was able=
  744. to maximize his Linux training investment by taking "Embedded Linux: A Cra=
  745. sh Course" while attending LinuxCon North America in Vancouver, B.C. </span=
  746.
  747. ></p>
  748. <p style=3D"color: #333333; padding-left: 30px;"><em><span style=3D"font-s=
  749. ize: 12px;">"The combination of the Embedded Linux training and the LinuxCo=
  750. n event provided a unique opportunity to get a full open source experience.=
  751. I am usually the only person in the room who has gone beyond the high-leve=
  752. l interactions with Linux code. At LinuxCon North America, everyone was lik=
  753. e me to some degree. That was very refreshing."</span></em></p>
  754. <p style=3D"color: #333;"><span style=3D"font-size: 12px;"> As for the lea=
  755. rning experiences in the LinuxCon sessions, Derald says that the sessions w=
  756. ere very good. "They gave me some perspective on how open source projects a=
  757. re managed," he added. </span></p>
  758. <p style=3D"color: #333333; padding-left: 30px;"><span style=3D"font-size:=
  759. 12px;">"Being in the same room with kernel maintainers was an interesting =
  760. experience. Once you realize that they are actually 'human' beings and not =
  761. 'mystical' beings, the big picture starts to unfold. They need our help wit=
  762. h testing, validation, and occasionally a good idea."</span></p>
