  12. Writing Dialogue - “Quotation Marks”

  14. - Separate speech from the rest of the sentence with commas:
  15. “Mom,”_he said,_“I’m hungry.” = He said,_“Mom, I’m hungry.”
  16. “It’s not easy,”_she said,_“to be a single mother.”
  17. “It’s not easy to be a single mother,”_she said.
  18. She said,_“It’s not easy to be a single mother.”
  19. - Question marks and exclamation marks go inside quotes even if the sentence isn’t finished:
  20. “Is there anything to eat?”_he asked.
  21. He asked,_“Is there anything to eat?”
  22. “Stop!”_he shouted.
  23. - If you use a person’s name, you can switch [name] and “said” after the quote:
  24. “I’m hungry,” Carl said. = “I’m hungry,” said Carl.
