- Writing Dialogue - “Quotation Marks”
- - Separate speech from the rest of the sentence with commas:
- “Mom,”_he said,_“I’m hungry.” = He said,_“Mom, I’m hungry.”
- “It’s not easy,”_she said,_“to be a single mother.”
- “It’s not easy to be a single mother,”_she said.
- She said,_“It’s not easy to be a single mother.”
- - Question marks and exclamation marks go inside quotes even if the sentence isn’t finished:
- “Is there anything to eat?”_he asked.
- He asked,_“Is there anything to eat?”
- “Stop!”_he shouted.
- - If you use a person’s name, you can switch [name] and “said” after the quote:
- “I’m hungry,” Carl said. = “I’m hungry,” said Carl.
