  1. >You once believed you were going to be a dancer.
  2. >When you were little it's all you could think about. You knew it was your life's calling.
  3. >You knew.
  4. >Unfortunately, you were never a graceful filly. You were just so clumsy and awkward. Your body never moved like you wanted.
  5. >And your parents were always quick to remind you of it.
  6. >So you trained yourself to get better. Practicing daily, studying technique, giving your all, you would never ever give up hope.
  7. >After all, you knew.
  8. >Days turned to months turned to years.
  9. >And that clumsy filly began to grow into a clumsy mare.
  10. >Even if your parents didn't believe in you, you still held fast to your hope.
  11. >Or so you kept telling yourself.
  12. >But slowly their words began to take hold.
  13. >And little by little that beautiful lie began to erode.
  14. >After all, they're only speaking the truth.
  15. >If you weren't so incompetent you could have kept your balance during the second scene.
  16. >If you weren't so stupid, you would have gotten your cutie mark already.
  17. >If you weren't so worthless, you could have been a dancer...
  18. >To your parents benefit they put up with you a lot longer than you deserved.
  19. >It isn't a surprise when you find your things have been dumped into a cardboard box and left out the lawn.
  20. >There's no note, but the message is clear.
  21. >They harbored your failure as long as they could stand.
  22. >You are no longer welcome with them.
  23. >With nowhere to go and no money, you drag the box to an alley and hide inside.
  24. >You try to be strong, but the dark is scary.
  25. >And you soon find yourself back on their front porch crying to be let inside.
  26. >After all they're still your parents.
  27. >They still love you.
  28. >They still care.
  29. >But nopony comes.
  30. >And the night sounds chase you back to the safest place you know.
  31. >Your box.
  32. >The first night was hard. But when you got through it, you thought the worst was over.
  33. >Then hunger set in.
  34. >Curling into a tight ball, you wish the world away.
  35. >One by one, you watch as your precious possessions get sold for bare bottom prices.
  36. >Money is such an evil thing. Why can't things just be free?
  37. >Everypony should be allowed food and water and shelter for free.
  38. >You curse the bits in your hand as you exchange them for precious nourishment.
  39. >Hungrily, you devour the small meal.
  40. >This was paid for with your dancing shoes.
  41. >You tried so hard not to part with them, but the hunger was too much.
  42. >The hunger is always too much.
  43. >Before you know it, you've consumed the whole thing and are licking the remains off your hooves.
  44. >After you thoroughly made you've gotten every last morsel, you stare at your empty hooves.
  45. >There's nothing left.
  46. >That was it. You have no way to earn money now.
  47. >The gnawing desire for food will return very shortly and you will have no way to sate it.
  48. >The thought is enough to bring tears to your eyes.
  49. >What will you do?
  50. >Nopony will hire you.
  51. >You have no talent. And you're living on the street.
  52. >Begging gets you nothing.
  53. >For such proactive society, ponies sure don't care about the downtrodden.
  54. >Walking back to your box, you curl up and do the only the thing you can.
  55. >You wait for somepony to come save you.
  56. >They don't.
  57. >They never do.
  58. >When the pain gets to be too much, you try your hand at begging again.
  59. >Nopony helps you.
  60. >Please. Just one or two bits.
  61. >No.
  62. >Please. I'm so hungry.
  63. >I can't spare it.
  64. >Please. Please. I'll do anything.
  65. >Anything?
  66. >Anything.
  67. >Alright.
  68. >The stranger tosses you twenty bits.
  69. >He just fed you for a week.
  70. >You hug his leg and cry.
  71. >But the euphoria dies down quick as you find what "anything" actually means.
  72. >You're reluctant at first, but when he moves to take back the bits, you cave.
  73. >You so badly want those bits.
  74. >Anything hurts...
  75. >But not as bad as the hunger. And he says this pain will pass.
  76. >He's right. It does.
  77. >Eventually. Long after he's gone and your stomach is full, you cry yourself to sleep.
  78. >And while you're asleep, there is no pain.
