  1. FOREWARD: The Wingdings isn't 100% accurate, since Chrome doesn't yet fully support the new unicode standards which implement Wingdings symbols as emoji. As such, I substituted similar symbols where the true symbols were missing. The least obvious neccesary substitutions were a Shamrock for the Wingdings Celtic Cross and an Orthodox Cross for the Wingdings Shaded Cross. I also switched out some true symbols for similar ones for visibility purposes.

  11. The creation of The Machine had, as these things tended to go, been an accident. His goal had been to create a computer with a soul- a being of metal & magic with a will of its own. He had failed at that goal.
  12.
  13. But the end result had been impressive enough for Asgore to grant him the position of Royal Scientist anyway. It was clear his skills as an inventor were needed. He was to do anything he could to improve the lives of the people. He would be afforded any number of workers, any amount of materials needed to do so.

  45. He had the design of the CORE ready by the next day. The design, the methods of construction were unprecedented- but sound. Construction began immediately. He was hailed as a genius, a miracle worker.
  46.
  47. The reality was that he simply had all the time in the world. Five years tweaking The Machine. Three years designing the CORE. One year devising safer construction methods. Another two years reworking the design after witnessing catastrophic failure. One day to wrap everything he'd learned into a neat proposal to give to Asgore.

  57. In the process, Gaster gained his first assistant. His main concern was design and construction, but using The Machine was tricky business. He needed someone to keep track of things- to keep events in order, keep track of when they were, when they needed to be, and how much time they had left. In that regard, Sans was the best assistant he could ask for: observant and hard-working to a fault. He got so good at keeping track of things that on the rare occasions Gaster would use The Machine without him present he would still manage a solid guess at what had transpired.

Timelines starting and ending, backtracking, going about in loops- he could not work in these conditions. The future was shrouded once again in an impenetrable darkness. There was no way to tell what the consequences of any one event would be. Not unless you could see every outcome at once.

  65. They turned next to studying the barrier, which in turn lead them to the study of souls. From there, the discovery of substance DT. Here he found his second assistant. Suzy's condition had to be closely monitored- too much of substance DT lead to breakdown- he shuddered to think what could have happened had he tried the treatment on multiple subjects rather than a single test case. On the other hand, too little of substance DT and she would return to her comatose state. Her condition demanded she stay in the lab housing the Extraction Machine, as DT levels could shift at any time, and she made a point to help out where she could.
