  5. Read the sample responses to yesterday’s writing practice. Try to put them in order from best to worst. (For the integrated writing you have one example of each score from 1 to 5. For independent, there are four examples, so one number is missing.)
  6. Integrated
  7. 5 - E
  8. 4 - A - This more clearly talks about both the text and the lecture for each point.
  9. 3 - D - This touches all three points, but misses the problem with the collar (from the text) and the details about the light and shadow.
  10. 2 - C
  11. 1 - B
  12. Independent
  13. 5 - B
  14. 4 - (no example)
  15. 3 - D
  16. 2 - A
  17. 1 - C
  18. ---
  19. A simple “standard” introduction could be:
  20. The text and the lecture are about a painting called “Portrait…”. The text explains why this paining is no longer considered an official part of Rembrandt’s work. The lecture, on the other hand, disagrees, and explains why the problems brought up by the text don’t prove it’s not a Rembrandt.
  21. ---
  22. Speaking Task 2 (old 3)
  23. - 45 seconds to read an announcement or proposal (about a change at a university)
  24. (what’s the change? why are they making or suggesting it?)
  25. - listen to a short conversation between students
  26. (what is the student’s opinion? why?)
  27. ---
  28. A response can be organized like this:
  29. 1 Introduction: summarize the text (what’s the change and why are they doing it?)
  30. 2 Thesis statement: state the speaker’s opinion (“The man thinks this is a bad idea.”)
  31. 3 Lead-in: (“He gives two reasons for his opinion.”)
  32. 4 First point: (“First, he says that the route is outdated.”)
  33. 5 Detail/example: (“The bus doesn’t go where students live now, and that’s why few…”)
  34. 6 Second point: (“Second, he disagrees with the idea of expanding the parking.”)
  35. 7 Detail/example: (“If they eliminate buses and expand parking, students will…”)
  36. (8 Conclusion - if you have time)
  37. ---
  38. ETS Guide tests 1 and 2 - sample responses
