  2. | Descent 20th Anniversary Race |
  3. | February 28th, 2015 - 2:00 PM EST |
  4. +-----------------------------------+
  5.
  6. The Material Defender turns 20 on February 28th; in celebration, he's going to purge the mines of our solar system once again!
  7.
  8.
  9. ==RULES==
  10.
  11. - Any% (Levels 1 to 27, secret levels not required [and not recommended])
  12. - Rookie Difficulty
  13. - Game is to be run through D1X-Rebirth V0.58.1.
  14. - Saving/loading is permitted at any time (DO SO OFTEN TO AVOID FORFEITS/RESTARTS)
  15. - Dying/death warping is allowed
  16.
  17.
  18. ==WHAT YOU NEED==
  19.
  20. Players of all levels, whether seasoned veterans or total newbies, are welcome and encouraged to sign up. To participate, here's what you'll need:
  21. - An account at SpeedRunsLive, as well as either Twitch or Hitbox
  22. - An IRC client
  23. - OBS (or any other streaming program)
  24. - Descent
  25. - D1X-Rebirth v0.58.1
  26.
  27.
  28. ==RACING==
  29.
  30. Once you've got everything above setup, you're ready to race! At some point around 1:00-1:30 PM EST, I will create the race channel. Here's what you'll need to do:
  31.
  32. * Go to #speedrunslive on the SpeedRunsLive IRC.
  33. * Use the .setstream command to set your streaming url if you haven't already.
  34. * Type .races to show the current list of races.
  35. * Join the Descent race channel shown.
  36. * Type .enter in the race channel to join the race.
  37. * Start your stream if you haven't already at this point. Select the difficulty level (Rookie) and wait at the intro cutscene screen.
  38. * Type .ready to ready up.
  39. * When everyone readies up, a countdown will begin. At "GO!", hit esc to exit the cutscene screen and begin playing.
  40. * Type .done upon exiting the final level.
  41. * Type .quit instead if you have to leave/forfeit at any point.

  44. ==SETUP HELP==
  45.
  46. --SpeedRunsLive and IRC--
  47.
  48. For information on SpeedRunsLive, connecting to the IRC channel, and joining the race channel, you can read the FAQ here:
  49. http://www.speedrunslive.com/faq/
  50.
  51.
  52. --OBS Installation and Setup--
  53.
  54. SpeedRunsLive requires all racers of PC games to livestream their gameplay. I recommend using OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) to do so. OBS is 100% free to use. You can grab it here:
  55. https://obsproject.com/
  56.
  57. If you need help configuring it, there's a helpful tutorial here:
  58. https://obsproject.com/forum/threads/tutorial-for-open-broadcaster-software-or-obs.311/
  59.
  60.
  61. --Game Installation--
  62.
  63. As for Descent itself, if you don't own a physical copy of the game, there are two primary outlets for the game:
  64.
  65. http://www.gog.com/game/descent_1_descent_2 - Descent I & II package deal for $9.99
  66. http://store.steampowered.com/app/273570/ - Descent I for $7.99 (Descent II is $9.99)
  67.
  68. You'll also need the sourceport regardless of which version you get. Grab it here. You'll want D1X-Rebirth v0.58.1.
  69. http://www.dxx-rebirth.com/
  70.
  71. Once you have all the necessary resources, navigate to where the base game is installed and grab the following files:
  72.
  73. descent.hog
  74. descent.pig
  75.
  76. And copy them into the 'data' folder found in the d1x-rebirth directory. That's it!
  77.
  78. Optional - I recommend also adding the opl3 music add-on into the data folder. It won't change gameplay, but it provides (in my opinion) a much better soundfont for the music in the game.

  80.
  81.
  82. --Game Configuration--
  83.
  84. There are a few in-game settings you may want to check before the race.
  85.
  86. *Controls*
  87.
  88. Using a mouse & keyboard setup is recommended. I recommend maxing out all rotational sensitivities as well. Here is my personal control setup. Red text denotes Descent II exclusive controls, and can be safely ignored:

  90.
  91. Note that system keys CANNOT BE CHANGED. Here's a quick rundown of the important ones to know:
  92.
  93. Esc - Abort Game Menu
  94. Pause - Pauses the game. Also shows some in-game stats.
  95. Tab - Map
  96.
  97. F1 - System Key Help
  98. F2 - Options
  99. F3 - Toggle HUD mode
  100.
  101. Alt+F1 - Quicksave
  102. Alt+F2 - Save Game
  103. Alt+F3 - Load Game
  104.
  105. *Misc Options*
  106.
  107. Ship Auto-Leveling - HIGHLY RECOMMEND DISABLING THIS. When enabled, the game will constantly try to force your ship to 90 degree angle orientations, which can really mess with movement. Only recommend using this if you're finding yourself constantly getting very disoriented.
  108. Persistent Debris - KEEP THIS DISABLED. It may be a neat visual effect, but the pieces of debris from enemies have hit detection and will block shots from both you and enemies.
  109.
  110. The rest are unimportant. You may want to play around with the last two ("No Weapon Autoselect When Firing" and "Only Cycle Autoselect Weapons"), but these are purely user preference.
  111.
  112.
  113.
  114.
  115.
  116. That's everything you need to know, Material Defender. Now, prepare for descent...
