22.
Trigger warning: miscarriage

 23.
When Andre José and Selma got married, they never realized that they had such similar backgrounds (it was a rather whirlwind of a relationship in which they got married younger than they’d really want to admit). Both of their families had immigrated from Cuba when they were just children, escaping from the island after the revolution. But the promise of the American Dream was much better than their homeland could ever give to them, so they set out to make a life. It was in their hopes that they would have a large family that they could provide for, to show every ounce of love and help create a bright future.

 24.
For many years, they tried. Even with all the home remedies and charms and prayers, there was no fruition for Andre José and Selma until the beginning of 1989. Though they were excited, they knew better than to announce the pregnancy after the miscarriages and losses they had previous experienced. But later that year, Valeria Mila Márquez was born. After being named after her Abuela Valentia on her mother’s side, she was given the middle name of Mila after Virgin Mary, Nuestra Señora de los Milagros — our Lady of Miracles. That’s what the little baby in pink represented to Andre José and Selma after their years of attempts and nearly giving up: a miracle.

 25.
However, it seemed that Valeria was the only miracle that the Márquezes would receive because their attempts at pregnancy after were once again only in vain. Their dreams and expectations of having a large family shattered, but they still had their daughter. Perhaps it was their fear of letting their only child slipping through their fingers, but ever since she was a baby, her parents made it their priority to do everything and anything in their power to do what they deemed best for their daughter. At first, Valeria didn’t mind it; she saw it as her parents’ love and attention and devotion for her.

 26.
They enrolled her in the best Catholic school in all of Little Havana from pre-school, all the way until high school. They made sure she had tutoring on weeknights and took etiquette classes and spent time with her abuelos and primos on the weekend. They had even planned out what school she would attend and the degree that she would earn. But as she grew older and started her rebellious years, she started to question her parents’ intentions and their authority that they held over her. They reminded her that they knew what was good for Valeria, even if she didn’t see the bigger picture. But in her head, she had made it up that her parents were making her owe them for the fact that she was their only child.

 27.
It wasn’t until she went away for college that Val finally tasted her first sense of freedom in her whole eighteen years. Despite the fact that her parents had their eyes set on something closer like University of Florida, they agreed upon Syracuse University for its ranking. Though her first choice had originally been USC, she was grateful to even be in a different state than her family. All of her teenage rebellion years had been squashed by her parents, but now that she was in college, it was all different.

 28.
Her freshman year roommate was the one that showed her all the wonders of being independent for the first time. Christina had been your average trust fund baby hailing from New York City pursuing a degree in fashion merchandising and knew everything about autonomy. She taught Val how to take a shot (inhale, drink, exhale), took her to her first frat party, and was the first girl that she kissed without the shame of Catholic school in the back of the mind. Though the friendship ended in a destructive manner, a small part of Valeria was grateful to her freshman year roommate for teaching her a more wild side of life.

 29.
Despite the temptations of college and how quickly people dropped out from having too much independence for the first time in their lives, Valeria was not one of those people. Knowing fully well that her education was only possible because of her academic-based scholarships, she spent a majority of her time studying in isolation to maintain her grades. Even with her new pastime of partying, she was able to graduate summa cum laude from Syracuse University with a degree in public relations. The summer after graduating was when Valeria immediately began her masters in Management of Hospitality at Cornell University and in a year, she was able to achieve a second degree and a certification in event management.

 30.
An internship she had during her undergraduate brought her back to Boston after getting her degrees in which she immediately started working for an event planning company as a wedding planner. Though she had never imagined becoming a wedding planner as a child, it was a field that she found that she excelled in with her attention to detail, creative vision, and most importantly, by depersonalizing herself from the situation.

 31.
With 1,200 miles of distance between her and her family, Valeria reveled in the amount of independence that she had as a completely autonomous adult who made her own choices. However, she never realized that when as she got older, she became just as controlling as her parents, despite all the resentment that she held toward their behavior. It was especially apparent in her work when she would nitpick situations and demand and control every aspect that she could. Volatile would be the best word to describe Valeria in the present day. Known for her temper, she has little to no patience for situations in which she knows can be handled more smoothly and efficiently. She also is on the guarded side, known to not let many in on her life back in Miami or her thoughts. Despite her obvious bitterness toward her parents for their controlling ways during her childhood, Val sends money home to her extended family in order to help them out from time-to-time.
