- Replacing Obamacare comes down to (2) critical questions:
- 1. Do you believe healthcare is a universal human right?
- 2. Do you believe healthcare is a commodity?
- Republicans are having trouble determining that exact answer. Here is how I see it – if I go to a store and see an item I can’t afford that DOES NOT mean I am “entitled” to that item. I can simply save more money, shop around, and save more money.
- The common elements amongst all current Obamacare replacements are:
- 1. No more federal funding for Planned Parenthood – self-explanatory.
- 2. Destroying Obamacare Taxes – hello Snookie! No more tanning tax, etc.
- 3. Taxing Cadillac Plans – the “better” the plan, the higher your taxes on said plan are.
- 4. Eliminating the individual mandate – this has already basically occurred – but you need another “buy in” for insurance companies if you want universal coverage.
- 5. High-Risk Statewide Pools – If insurance companies were to eliminate the mandate, the government would provide funds for the sickest individuals on a statewide level.
- 6. Lapse Penalty – If your insurance lapses, you will be hit with a tax based on income.
- 7. Insurance Access / RandCare – a larger number of low cost plans with higher deductibles for years you don’t need any more coverage. Can also upgrade plan at any time.
- 8. Age Based Subsidies - if you are older, the government gives you an income subsidy to pay for insurance. This encourages younger people to NOT buy insurance, which is risky.
- 9. No more Medicaid expansion – the US government would no longer pay for Medicaid expansion and return more power to the states.
- 10. No more age restrictions – this is an little thing about Obamacare- under current US law, insurers can ONLY charge 3x as much as a plan when comparing a younger persons plan to an older persons plan.
- Several of these ideas are noble. The problem is not every good idea is listed on ever R plan. Its time for Rs to come together and combine the best elements.
