  5. Our tale has its basis upon a large continent and several smaller islands, populated mainly by descendants of the Vellok, a tribe of wanderers escaping from their slavedriving masters from the desert wastes in the far north. Very few barbarians from the Korn tribe are still alive, and fewer still from the Hapeth tribe, as both were crushed underfoot in the Vellok's rapid expansion. Numerous townships, ports, and villages sprung up in a matter of years, their ownership divided between two kingdoms, Ikov in the east, and Thron to the west.
  6.
  7. Much of the islands and mainland are still forested and wild, though great effort has gone towards agriculture, especially in the east, where fresh water from rivers flows freely. There are few mountain ranges, save for one hardly of note near the western shores, giving Thron's capital of Stillburg a pleasant climate, and in turn, more storms visit Ikov's locales.

  9. The favored religion of the realm is following the teachings of Ramedna, a deity thought to represent order, honor, and loyalty. In recent times, Kethos has regained favor, with the devout preaching qualities of balance, clear and methodical thought, and undertones of pacifism. Ever present is the worship of the dark Jhaque, a chaotic spirit that encourages the over-imbibing of spirits, pestering if not outright bringing violence to one's neighbors, and many other acts that would turn a man's soul black if he were to merely hear them. What few barbaric heathens still draw breath likely pay respects to any number of beings in their multitudes of pantheons, each governing a different aspect of their pathetic and likely short lives.

  17. Relations between the kingdoms of Thron and Ikov have broken down to a point where minor skirmishes take place nearly daily, though no official word has been spoken of all-out war. Started over trade disputes and petty disagreements of nobles, venomous hatred now pours from the mouth of either king (or at least his advisers and supporters) for the other.
  18.
  19. Confined to a relatively small continent, the two kingdoms were free to expand from their humble roots across the plains and forests once patrolled and settled by the barbaric tribes of Hapeth and Korn. Once a majority of the land was claimed, rivalries and disagreements on borders began, culminating in the present unrest.
  20.
  21. Further, an accursed blight which likely sprung from the barbarian shamans now spreads across the landscape, encroaching upon the north of Ikov and much of Thron's western and northern borders. A black haze spreads across the ground and through the trees, devouring living things as it grows. The dead occasionally find reason to rise within this miasma, and any intrepid expedition venturing into its depths is never heard from.
  22.
  23. Even from within, the insidious descendants of barbarians plan on bringing the kingdoms to their knees for revenge of their long lost kin. Delving into forbidden texts and scriptures, infiltrating sacred orders, and accepting the privilege of citizenship only to turn and sacrifice their fellow man to any number of black rites before feasting on their flesh in their basements are but a few steps they take in ensuring the twin kingdoms know fear before crumbling.

  27. An atlas of the realm and the occasional surrounding isle thrown in. Perhaps not the most accurate available, but it certainly provides an easy understanding of the boundaries of the kingdoms, the towns under their rule, and the spread of the blight.

  30. Behold the symbol of Ramedna, displaying golden wings upon which justice is most swiftly delivered, emblazoned with the regal octagonal eye with which every unjust deed is watched and judged:
