  1. >Day [REDACTED] at the Thunderponedome
  2. >You are Anon, decked out in a cool lab coat and holding a manila folder with a big red classified stamp on it
  3. >You're a new Kaiju handler, assigned to a rather ominous sounding one, Calamity
  4. >You'd much prefer to be dealing with Orchid. She sounds much more pleasant
  5. >And you were hoping to take over her care after her previous handler broke protocol
  6. >Showing that poor janitor the 'chip trick' as it was known turned out to be a foolish idea and got an earful from the boss and then some
  7. >All the same
  8. >You ride down the elevator to the deeper parts of the complex, almost so little natural light shines down
  9. >according to the dossier in the folder, Calamity has a large amount of unique bioluemnsesnce, in the form of motlen material produced from her body
  10. >She's like a walking, talking, living magma vent
  11. >And you've got to keep her from going nuts and convince her to fight for humanity
  12. >You've got your work cut out for you
  13.
  14.
  15. >You eventually descend to the floor of your destination
  16. >The door opens to a large room, a sort of steel plated dome surrounding a dark, watery center, a metallic catwalk with railings circling it
  17. >The railing is absent right in front of you, likely meant as an easy entry part in the event of an underwater observation
  18. >You'd imagine the water isn't quite the same as the ambient pressure, otherwise you'd get crushed like paper if you were to enter
  19. >You walk closer to the water, holding onto the railing and peering into the inky abyss
  20. >Near the bottom of the water, you can see a faint outline of an equine shape, a searing red orange color, large dots of the color near what you assume to be the joints of the creature.
  21. >The surface bubbles slightly, large columns of thick steam rising from the bottom of the tank
  22. >You're feeling nervous already from the sheer strangeness of it all
  23. >You clear your throat, unsure what to do exactly or how to get her attention
  24. "Ah...hello? Can you hear me?"
  25. >It's foolish to think she could hear you that deep down, but it was worth a shot
  26. >They sort of threw you to the lions here, so you're going on your guts here
  27. >After a while, nothing seems to happen
  28. >You groan and lightly kick the steel bar in frustration, and yelp as you realize it's much harder than steel
  29. >That action alone seems to stir the beast from the depths, two large, round glowing orange orbs looking up at you
  30. >You've heard of the abyss staring back at you ,but this is kind of silly
  31. >Fear and anticipation suffusing your being, you grip the railing tightly as she begins to rise to the surface
  32.
  33. >As she gets closer to the top of the tank, the steam begins to break the surface of the water, filling up the room some
  34. >Fans activate to vent the excess steam, but a fair amount still lingers in the room
  35. >Not to mention the dimly lit room is now bathed in an otherwordly orange glow
  36. >She emerges, breaking the surface of the water and you get a good look at her...or at least, her face
  37. >She's much like pictures of Orchid you've seen, but lacking any hair, horn of antennae to speak of
  38. >Orange replaces blue and her skin seems to be an obsidian colored shade of black, shiny and smooth
  39. >Her teeth seem to be long and sharp, giving her a more snaggletoothed look, spirals of red along the fangs
  40. >Her eyes are just as large and expressive as hers, but seem somewhat neutral
  41. >Lines of orange spread from her mouth down along the sides of her neck, and long spikes protrude from the back of her head
  42. >It gives her a sort of spiky hair look, kinda cute
  43. >The heat of the room is comparable to a hot summer day, steam emitting from her nose each time she exhales
  44. >You are in awe of the strange, mighty creature before you, and only her head is visible!
  45. >You've got a job to do, and dang it you're going to do it
  46. >You are sort of wishing you wore your brown pants today, though.
  47.
  48.
  49. >You calm yourself, clearing your throat and reaching into your pocket to get a pen, flipping open the folder to a lined page labeled "Kaiju Observations"
  50. "Ah...hello. I didn't mean to wake you up..."
  51. >She remains silent, those two orange eyes seeming to judge you
  52. >Frodo only had to deal with one burning eye, and you've got too right in front of you
  53. >You internally shake your head, trying to remain focused
  54. "...I hope you've been well? Are you finding the accommodations agreeable?" You ask
  55. >She tilts her head, and looks around, and then down at the water before speaking
  56. >Her voice is slightly deep, with a sort of rumbling quality to it.
  57. >"Yes." She says simply, laconic and to the point.
  58. >She has a glowing orange tongue in her maw, unlike Orchid
  59. >You couldn't see any fleshy bits inside her mouth, and you scribble down "Possibly made entirely of lava?"
  60.
  61. "Ah, well, that's good! We tried to replicate your native environment as best we could."
  62. >"It's quiet. I cannot hear the sounds of the deep." She says, frowning a bit.
  63. >Sounds of the deep...you don't want to know what sort of things might be heard down in the aphotic regions of the ocean
  64. "I'll see what I can do to get some of those sounds for you." You say with a pleasant smile
  65. >She seems to try to replicate with expression
  66. >IT's sort of like Toothless trying to smile in HTTYD
  67. >She drops the expression to speak once again
  68. >"Thank you." She says, showing little emotion as usual
  69. "No problem. It's my job to make you feel as comfortable as possible."
  70. >You scribble down some miscellaneous observations, and she remains quite, looking at you all the while
  71. >Though throughout it all, you can't help but feel as if she's the one observing you
  72. >Finishing your notes, you speak again
  73. "So, Calamity, do you remember anything about the Breach?"
  74. >She seems to tilt her head some, looking a bit perplexed.
  75. >"...What is Calamity?"
  76. "Ah...right. That's your name, what we know you by so we can communicate. I'm [REDACTED], but everyone just calls me Anon."
  77. >She seems to ponder it for a moment before speaking again
  78. >"What does Calamity mean?"
  79. >You bite your tongue, unsure how to phrase a response to her question
  80.
  81. "Well...it's an event that causes a lot of damage, you see. Fires, earthquakes, floods...that sort of thing."
  82. >She seems displeased with this explanation, trying to frown, but it doesn't quite make it to a full scowl
  83. >"I am not dangerous. I create. I do not destroy." She says, a tone of sadness in her rumbling voice
  84. "Some people might see you as that. You're basically made out of lava, as far as I can tell, and that's quite destructive to most humans. Er, that's creatures like me, you see."
  85. >She seems to nod slowly. "I do not want to destroy. And you are here. You are not being destroyed. So I am not dangerous?"
  86. >You sigh a bit, jotting notes down the whole while
  87. "...I don't think you are, myself. But a lot of other humans would think so, and they would do all that they could to destroy you, if they had the chance."
  88. >She recoils a bit, sinking into the water some
  89. >You try to smile to calm her
  90. "But I'll do everything I can to make sure they don't, and that you're not dangerous, just...unique and misunderstood. That's why I'm here, to get to know you and what you can do."
  91. >She seems to sit there a while, mulling some thoughts over
  92. >You really hope you haven't screwed the pooch on your first day
  93. >You look at her expectantly, and she stares back
  94. >What follows is an incredibly intense, high stakes staring contest, but she's got the advantage, being half submerged like that
  95.
  96. >She emerges her head fully again, a slight smile on her face. "You...tell them I am not dangerous? Tell them I can create?"
  97. "Promise I will. I'll do all that I can, but you have to help me. "
  98. >"Then, I will do all that I can."
  99. >She smiles a wide grin, and it's infectious.
  100. >It's sort of strange, seeing such an innocent, wide grin on a seemingly dangerous and destructive creature
  101. "Well...could you tell me what you do to create? That'd be a good place to start."
  102. >She seems to open her mouth to speak a few times, but doesn't seem able to really put anything into words.
  103. >Finally, she lets out a rumbling sigh as she submerges suddenly, without warning.
  104. >You blink and look down as she sinks slightly, and the orange spots on her forelimbs begin to grow brightly, almost to the point where it hurts to look at it
  105. >You recoil, stepping back as more steam begins to form in the room
  106. >Covering your eyes, you squint and look as the fans go into overdrive
  107. >The heat is getting quite intense, and you'll sweating quite a bit
  108. >It's like walking into a steam room, fully clothed
  109. >Things calm down eventually, to the point where you can finally see again and the heat subsides
  110. >You're drenched in sweat and salt water vapor, but what you see makes you forget all about that
  111.
  112. >She emerged in the midst of all the steam, and it's quite amazing
  113. >She's got a massive, boulder sized chunk of a flawless, smooth obsidian, gleaming slightly in the lit room
  114. >She's grinning like a dog with a bone in her mouth
  115. "Oh...wow. You just made that?"
  116. >She nods, almost banging the thing on the catwalk
  117. "Ah, easy, easy! Here...just, put it to the side there."
  118. >She leans over, dropping it onto the catwalk with a CLANG
  119. >Despite the impact, it doesn't seem all that damaged, no chips or cracks visible
  120. >You are furiously writing down notes, your excitement slightly damped by the fact it'd be quite difficult to gather a sample from something as hard as that
  121. >You are interrupted by your note taking as she speaks
  122. >"I create...islands like that. I can create more structures in the deep. The stone is hard and dense. "
  123. "I see...I see, very interesting!" You exclaim with a huge grin. "This is great, there's going to be so much data here we can use...this is a good step forward, Calamity."
  124. >She closes her eyes and smiles widely as you go over to inspect the large, smooth, seemingly featureless oblong boulder
  125.
  126. >You're cautious to do any physical observations, and you're lacking a scanner or anything to do real observations
  127. >You draw sketches, take more notes and underline important things, but this is interrupted by a loud, low rumbling yawn.
  128. >You look over to see the giant lavahorse yawning widely, giving her a better view of her maw
  129. >She's got something in her mouth, but she closes it before you can get too good of a look
  130. >"Sleepy. Creating is...tiring. I need to rest." He says with half lidded eyes.
  131. "Ah, right. That'd make sense. You get your rest, then. We'll meet when you wake up."
  132. >She nods. "I...would like that. Your voice sounds nice. And...you are helping to show I am not a calamity."
  133. "You're anything but, if you can make stuff like this."
  134. >She nods and slowly sinks into the water, those eyes looking at you all the while
  135. >As she settles on the bottom, she gives you one last look before you see the eyes close, and you assume she is asleep.
  136. >You giggle with glee as you write down notes and head to the elevator
  137. >Looking at your watch, she had prefect timing, as your session was almost up, anyways
  138. >Your first day with your kaiju went swimmingly, to say the least
  139. >And you've got something to show to the eggheads in the lab!
  140. >The whole process is quite mentally exhausting, but you imagine you'll get used to it
  141. >After you shower and change, you think a well deserved rest will be in order
  142. >But before that, you make sure to stop by the Quartermasters office to fill out some forums for more food and ambient sounds for Calamity
