  1. >Date Night in Hollow Shades.
  2. >Your best friend Echo set you up on a blind date with some mare that just moved back to Hollow Shades.
  3. >You know absolutely nothing about her.
  4. >Just that she'll be sitting at table seventeen of the Batty Moon, Hollow Shade's most premiere restaurant.
  5. >Looking in a mirror, you tidy your mane up, but it seems to just form back into its usual shape.
  6. >You sigh and adjust your tie.
  7. >No, maybe that's too formal.
  8. >You remove the tie and unbutton the top two buttons of your dress shirt.
  9. >Girls love a casual, yet formal, stallion.
  10. >You nod and squint at the mirror.
  11. "You are one cold, hard, ladykiller, Aux."
  12. >As you get ready to leave your home, you pick up a bouquet of flowers that Echo picked up for you.
  13. >It was a variety, from tulips to daisies to chrysanthemums.
  14. >Hopefully, this new mare would like them.
  15.
  16. >Screeches fill your house as a youthful mare with a dark turquoise mane runs from room to room.
  17. >"Echo! Where'd I put my dress?!"
  18. >You bring a hoof to your face and sigh softly.
  19. "You're wearing it, Speck."
  20. >She looks down and blushes.
  21. >"Oh."
  22. >She darts out of the livingroom in which you sit and returns momentarily.
  23. >On top of her head is a wide-brimmed hat with a feather sticking out of it.
  24. >A disgusted look crosses your face.
  25. "Please tell me you aren't wearing that."
  26. >She closes her eyes and sticks her nose up in the air.
  27. >"I am."
  28. >You squint at her.
  29. "Take it off."
  30. >"Nope."
  31. "Speck, please. I can understand him screwing this date up, but you?"
  32. >She sits down and places her hooves over her ears.
  33. >Her screeches sound through the house again.
  34. >"I can't hear you!"
  35. >You stop talking.
  36. >The clocks in your house show that it is currently six-fifteen.
  37. "You should get going, Speck."
  38. >Her screeches change from annoyance to joy as she trots out of your house.
  39. >Aux was going to owe you big time.
  40.
  41. >You look all around the restaurant.
  42. >It's so fancy and posh.
  43. >Your mouth hangs half-way open in an overly excited smile.
  44. >Tonight is already perfect.
  45. >"Miss?"
  46. >You look at the hostess.
  47. >"Do you have a reservation?"
  48. >You nod and continue to smile.
  49. >"Name?"
  50. "Echo."
  51. >She looks down a list.
  52. >"Table seventeen for two, right this way."
  53. >You trot behind her as she leads you to your table.
  54. >As you trot, you look at what everyp0ny else is eating.
  55. >All of it looks so fancy and rich.
  56. >"Can I start you off with anything?"
  57. >You shake your head.
  58. "No thank you. I'm waiting for my blind date to get here."
  59. >You kick your hind hooves around under the table and continue looking around with a smile on your face.
  60. >You made sure to wear your lucky dress and your lucky hat.
  61. >Nothing could go wrong tonight.
  62.
  63. >You're late!
  64. >You're late for your very important date!
  65. >Sprinting through Hollow Shades and past dozens of other bat p0nies, you skid to a halt in front of the Batty Moon.
  66. >A quick glance at the local clocktower reveals that it is currently six-thirty-one.
  67. >You were supposed to be here at six-thirty sharp.
  68. >The night could still be salvaged, right?
  69. >Oh, you hope so.
  70. >You trot into the restaurant.
  71. >The hostess scoffs at you with disgust.
  72. >You nervously try to button the top two buttons on your shirt, but they slip out of your grip.
  73. "I'm here for a reservation for two? The name is Echo?"
  74. >She rolls her eyes and points you to table seventeen.
  75. >You look over to see a young mare with dull orange eyes smiling and bouncing in her seat.
  76. >Wow.
  77. >She's kind of cute.
  78. >You walk over to the table.
  79. "Is this seat taken?"
  80. >She shakes her head and smiles.
  81. >You climb up into the chair as you take a seat.
  82. >After some difficulty, of course.
  83. >You managed to slip and fall out of it, which elicited a giggle from the mare at the table.
  84. >"I, uh... I got you these."
  85. >You hand her the bouquet of flowers.
  86. >Luckily, you managed to not destroy them when you ran over here.
  87.
  88. >Well, he's definitely kind of cute.
  89. >In a dorky, awkward kind of way.
  90. >You extend a hoof across the table.
  91. "I'm Speck.
  92. >He reaches for your hoof, but knocks a pepper shaker off of the table as he does so.
  93. >"I-I'm Aux..."
  94. >He leans over to pick the shaker up and clean his spill up.
  95. >One of the waiters comes over with menus.
  96. >"What can I get you to drink?"
  97. >You open your mouth to speak, but Aux beats you to the punch.
  98. >"A g-glass of blood and a mango juice."
  99. >He drinks blood?
  100. >Interesting.
  101. >You've never really had a meal with a blood-drinker before.
  102. >It grossed you out a little bit, but not enough to really say anything.
  103. >"So what brought you back to Hollow Shades?"
  104. >His slight stutter was gone.
  105. "Well. I guess I was getting a little homesick? Swinging from town to town drove me a little batty."
  106. >You put extra emphasis on "swinging."
  107. >He raises an eyebrow.
  108. >"O-okay."
  109. >The waiter returns with your drinks.
  110. >You reach for the mango juice.
  111. >Aux does too.
  112. >You stare at each other.
  113. >The waiter stares at the two of you.
  114. >"Is there something wrong?"
  115. >Aux pulls his hoof away and starts looking away.
  116. >"N-no."
  117. >You nod.
  118. "I accidentally ordered blood. I meant to ask for a banana milkshake, but I got a little tongue twisted. I'm sorry."
  119. >The waiter nods with a smile and takes the blood away.
  120. "You know, you could have asked me what I wanted to drink, instead off assuming I drank blood."
  121. >He blushes and hides his face.
  122. >"I'm s-so sorry."
  123. >You roll your eyes.
  124. "It's alright, it was a simple mistake.
  125. >You reach for his hooves and pull them away from his face.
  126. >He continues to look away.
  127.
  128. >Good going, Aux.
  129. >You almost screwed the night up again.
  130. >But you can't help it.
  131. >She's so cute and you really want to impress her.
  132. >"So what do you do for a living?"
  133. >You tap your hooves together and smile sheepishly.
  134. "I'm a night guard."
  135. >She lets a short gasp of excitement out.
  136. >"I've always wanted to be a night guard! What's it like?"
  137. "W-well. It's kinda dangerous..."
  138. >"Tell me more!"
  139. >You swallow hard and sip at your juice.
  140. "I've b-been involved in numerous s-secret raids on the diamond d-dogs."
  141. >Stop being so nervous, Aux.
  142. >There's a cute mare sitting across from you and she's genuinely interested in what you have to say.
  143. "I get to guard Princess Luna herself, sometimes."
  144. >The waiter returns with Speck's milkshake.
  145. >She takes it and immediately starts blowing bubbles into it.
  146. >"May I take your orders?"
  147. >You haven't even looked at the menu.
  148. >Opening it as quickly as possible and scanning down the list of items, you decide on a carrot-apple tart.
  149. >But of course, something went wrong.
  150. >You look over at the waiter, ready to order, but notice that he is sopping wet.
  151. >And your glass of juice is on the floor.
  152. >Speck giggles to herself, you blush, and the waiter fumes.
  153. >"I'm going to have to ask the two of you to leave."
  154.
  155. >Aux walks beside you with his head hung low as the two of you walk through town.
  156. >The moon hangs high in the sky and illuminates your path.
  157. >You hum a soft melody, but your company seems to be trapped in his own thoughts.
  158. "Aux?"
  159. >He perks up a little and looks at you.
  160. >"Y-yeah?"
  161. >You blush and look away as you make eye contact with him.
  162. "Wanna do something fun?"
  163. >He sighs and looks away.
  164. >"N-not really."
  165. >You shake your head and roll your eyes.
  166. >You weren't going to let some stupid dinner ruin the night.
  167. "Okay, that's fine."
  168. >Maybe some coffee and a game at your place would cheer him up.
  169. >You know just the game, too.
  170.
  171. >You arrive at her house.
  172. >She stands on her doorstep beside you.
  173. >She unlocks and opens her door, stepping inside.
  174. >"Wanna come in for some hot coffee?"
  175. >Her words are accompanied by a wink and a flick of her tail.
  176. "N-no thanks. I'm a little full from dinner. Doubt I could eat much more."
  177. >You smile and laugh awkwardly.
  178. "I'll s-see you later."
  179. >She shoots you a deadpan stare.
  180. >"Sure thing."
  181. >As you head back to your house, you hold your head high and smile.
  182. >The night went well.
  183.
  184. >One week later.
  185. >You sit on your couch as you read a short novel.
  186. >One of the characters reminds you a little of Speck.
  187. >You remember standing on her doorstep.
  188. >She asked if you wanted hot coffee and winked at you.
  189. >Slowly looking up from the book, your eyes close and your teeth clench together.
  190. >Only just now realizing what she meant, one short sentence escapes your lips.
  191. "Luna, dammit."
