  1. Hi :),
  2.
  3. I've talked to a lot of developers, security consultants, geeks/nerds on conferences etc. and they all are really really disappointed with the current laptop market situation. The main thing is, we don't need a portable TV, we need something to actually work with and we want to travel light.
  4. Because of that, I wanted to submit these specs and we may finally get a usable device.
  5.
  6. And many people would love to see something like this on the market. And most (if not all) people I've talked to are happily willing to pay 3-5k$/€ for a device like this (because you won't have to update, at least within the next couple of years)
  7. And hey, they are already paying 4k to Apple, because Apple has devices close to these specs (but we don't want to buy Apple products, however that's a different story).
  8.
  9. ### So here we go ###
  10.
  11. - CPU: i7-3612QE (6M lvl3 cache, 4 cores, ivy bridge, 35W TDP)
  12. - RAM: At least 16GB, 32GB would be better though (security consultants utilise a lot of virtual machines and we need them locally)
  13. - Display: 14-15" anti glare and at least 16:10 1920:1200 (please don't use 16:9)
  14. - Ports: 2 USB 3.0 and 2 high power USB 2.0 (4 USB 3.0 would be better, but this does not seem to be not possible at the moment ...)
  15. - 2 full height GBit Ethernet ports (but at least 1 full height GBit Ethernet port)
  16. - WLAN and LTE module (with a hardware RF kill-switch, this is very important!)
  17. - a usable notebook backlit keyboard (like the one from the new Asus Zenbook or Macbook Pro Retina)
  18. - mini/micro HDMI
  19. - usual audio ports
  20. - 2 HDDs or 1 2.5" slot and 1 mSATA SSD, no optical drive
  21. - weight should be approx. 2kg not more
  22. - Kensington lock slot
  23. - Not thicker than approx. 25mm
  24. - The case should be anodized black magnesium or carbon like the new X1 from Lenovo (other colors are fine too, but you should at least have a black one)
  25. - small power adapter
  26. - No extra graphic unit (to keep it cool, small and light), if we want to play games or calculate things, we use a GPU-cluster or workstation.
  27. - RAM and HDD should be user serviceable.
  28. - One should be able to buy the laptop without an operating system at all (may be impossible, oem/vendor contracts etc.)
  29.
  30. FireWire, card reader, Thunderbolt, PCMCIA, DisplayPort etc. should be optional. As a security consultant I don't want ports that could be utilised for DMA attacks (please do not include a docking station port!)
  31. But one *deactivatable* Thunderbolt port is ok, we need it for security tests anyway :)
  32.
  33. And please, please no proprietary things (or non widely accepted standards), like the "new" SSD interface in Apple products or Asus Zenbook, thanks.
  34.
  35. If one could run stock Linux and BSD derivates without proprietary drivers, kernel modules, self fixing issues etc..., that would be reaaaalllllyyyy great.
  36.
  37. Some closing words:
  38. I guess this will never ever happen nor will an engineer from $company ever see these specs, but at least I've tried it :D
  39.
  40. If anyone who read this is interested in having such a device, please share, like, comment, tweet about it :)
  41. And also remember, if you think it's too costly, one could order this with less RAM and a far cheaper CPU and you may get it for an affordable price, that's totally up to the company selling it :)
  42.
  43. But please respect the individual site/page/whatever rules :)
  44.
  45. Kind regards,
  46. thewildcat
