- This is a draft proposal for determining the tiebreakers to be used in the 4chan Cup. The 4chan Cup Committee, if they so wish to, will vote on how many of these will be formally adapted as the tiebreaker rules for use in the 4chan Cup, and if so, in what order. (The /vg/ League Committee, if they so wish to, may also vote in a similar manner, independent of the 4chan Cup Committee, but this proposal is intended for the 4chan Cup Committee.)
- For the purpose of determining qualification for the next round, the following tiebreakers are applied in order for two or more teams tied on points:
- 1. Goal difference
- 2. Goals scored
- 3. Head to head record between tied teams
- 3a. Points scored against tied teams
- 3b. Goal difference against tied teams
- 3c. Goals scored against tied teams
- 4. Keep reapplying criteron 3 and its subcriteria for as long as it is effective as a tiebreaker.
- 5. (Apply only if exactly 2 teams need to be tiebroken AND they meet in the last round of the group stage) Penalty shoot-out
- 6. Fair play conduct
- 7. Playoff if applicable, otherwise drawing of lots
- Using overall ranking positions for a Cup is currently the method used to determine seeding for the next relevant Cup, as well as replacement teams, if higher ranked teams should find themselves ineligible to participate in said Cup for any reason.
- For the purpose of determining overall ranking positions for teams eliminated in the group stage, the following tiebreakers are applied in order for two or more teams tied on points:
- 1. Goal difference
- 2. Goals scored
- 3. (Only if all the tied teams are from the same group) Head to head record between tied teams
- 3a. Points scored against tied teams
- 3b. Goal difference against tied teams
- 3c. Goals scored against tied teams
- 4. Keep reapplying criteron 3 and its subcriteria for as long as it is effective as a tiebreaker.
- 5. Fair play conduct
- 6. Playoff if applicable, otherwise drawing of lots
- When a team is knocked out by another in the knockout stage, the match in which they were knocked out will be referred to as their "last match". The knockout match before (if applicable), in which they won, will be referred to as their "second last match". And so on.
- Due to the presence of a third place playoff, there is no need to apply the tiebreaker to teams that made it to the semi-finals. Hence, these knockout stage tiebreakers will only apply to teams knocked out in the quarter-finals or lower.
- For the purpose of determining overall ranking positions for teams that advanced to the knockout stage, the following tiebreakers are applied in order for two or more teams knocked out of the same stage:
- 1. Goal difference in the last match
- 1a. If the match was decided on penalties, total number of penalty shots taken in the penalty shootout in the last match
- 1b. If the match was decided on penalties, penalty kicks scored in the penalty shootout in the last match
- 1c. Goals scored in the last match
- 2. Keep applying criteria 1 and its subcriteria to the second last match, third last match etc as long as it is applicable.
- 3. Overall points scored in the tournament (knockout matches included, using 3-1-0 system)
- 4. Overall goal difference in the tournament
- 5. Overall goals scored in the tournament
- 6. (Only if all the tied teams are from the same group) Head to head record
- 6a. Points scored against tied teams
- 6b. Goal difference against tied teams
- 6c. Goals scored against tied teams
- 7. Keep reapplying criteron 6 and its subcriteria for as long as it is effective as a tiebreaker.
- 8. Fair play conduct
- 9. Playoff if applicable, otherwise drawing of lots
- [Drafter's note: I would much prefer criteria 1 and 2 in the current draft to be given a lower priority, or better still do away with it altogether, but as criterion 1 (not sure about its subcriteria) is currently the standard used, it is placed on top for the time being. The 4chan Cup Committee can decide on whether to vote for it to stay that way, or for it to change.]
- In addition, also vote to determine if matches won or lost on penalties in the knockout stage should count as a win (3 points) for the winner and a loss (0 points) for the loser, a draw (1 point) for both teams, or a draw and a bonus point (2 points) for the winner and a draw and no bonus point (1 point) for the loser.
