Angela’s Ashe’s states, “Go home, she’ll say, and tell your father to get off his northern arse and get a job like the decent men of Limerick” (133). This quote shows how Aunt Aggie is mad because Malachy Sr. is from the north and is useless.
  4.
  5. 2. Bridey is Angela’s friend who lives next door. “When my father goes for his long walk Bridey comes in and she and Mam sit by the fire drinking tea and smoking cigarettes. If Mam has nothing in the house Bridey brings tea, sugar and milk” (133). This quote shows that Bridey is a good friend to Angela. When Angela doesn’t have anything in the house Bridey brings things to share with Angela and they have long talks.
  6. 3. Malachy Sr.’s teeth have holes from smoking cigarettes. “They tell us the cigarettes rot your teeth and you can see they’re not lying. The teeth turn brown and black in their heads and fall out one by one. Dad says he has holes in his teeth big enough for a sparrow to raise a family” (138). This quote shows that Malachy Sr.’s teeth were in a bad condition because of the cigarettes. Malachy Sr. ends up having holes in his teeth.
  7. 4. Malachy Jr. got Malachy Sr.’s teeth stuck in his mouth so they went to the hospital. Frank needs surgery because he is always standing with his mouth open. “The tonsils, he says. The adenoids. They have to come out. The sooner the better or he’ll look like an idiot when he grow up with that gob wide as a boot” (140). This quote shows that Frank was supposed to just go to the hospital for his brother but then the doctor checked on him. The doctor says that he needs to get his tonsils and his adenoids need to come out so his mouth will close.
  8. 5. A confraternity is a group of men or boys who gather together for religious reasons. Frank must go because his father is on the dole. “You can’t say no. All the boys in the lanes and back streets that have fathers on the dole or working in laboring jobs have to join” (146). This quote proves that Frank still needs to go either he likes it or not. Frank doesn’t have a choice.
  9. 6. Malachy Sr. wants Frank to be an altar boy because he was an altar boy when he was younger. “Dad says when he was my age in Toome he served Mass for years and it’s time for me to be an altar boy” (148). This quote shows that Malachy Sr. wants Frank to follow his footsteps. He teaches Frank the Latin so he will be ready to be an altar boy. Frank seems ready because even though he wants to be outside the lane playing he also wants to be able to help the priest vest in sacristy.
  10. 7. Paddy wants to use the restroom in Fintan’s house before he goes home. “…I wouldn’t want to go to Fintan’s flat anymore because he’s very odd, isn’t he, Frankie? He is, Paddy. The way he looks at it when you take it out, that’s odd, isn’t it, Frankie? ‘Tis Paddy” (159). This quote shows that Paddy finds Fintan weird. Paddy feels a little uncomfortable around Fintan.
  11. 8. Fintan gets Frank and Paddy to come to his house the second time by saying that he might give some of his lunch to them. “…Fintan Slattery said we could come to his flat at lunchtime. This quote shows that Fintan said a lie to get Frank and Paddy to go to his house.
  12. 9. Angela and Malachy Sr. find out that Frank skipped school because of the note from school. “Dotty O’ Neill sent a note to your house and said you didn’t come back to school after lunch, that you went on the mooch with Paddy Clohessey” (162-163). This quote shows that Frank’s master had sent a note to Frank’s home and that Frank will be in trouble for skipping school.
  13. 10. Paddy’s dream in life was to end up living in India. “He says he’ll write me a letter when he’s over there and I can come to India and have my own girl with a red dot” (162). This quote shows that Paddy wants to leave and go somewhere different from Ireland. Paddy believes that India is a better place than the lanes in Ireland.
  14. 11. Angela is crying when she leaves the Clohessey house at the end of chapter 6 because she remembered her dancing days. “‘Tis Dennis Clohessey and the dancing nights at the Wembley Hall and the fish and chips after” (169). She cries because she remembers the days when she danced with her dance partner and how fun it used to be, now it’s all in the past.
  15. 12. Mickey Spellancy wants Frank to pray for his sister to hang on until September comes before for she dies. “He comes to Billy Campbell and me to ask if we’ll go around the corner to St. Joseph’s Church and pray for Brenda to hang on till September” (171). This quote shows that Mickey Spellancy just wants his one week off from school when his sister passes away because if Brenda dies before school starts he can’t get a week off of school when there’s no school.
  16. 13. Mr. Timoney went to the City of Home. “Mr. Timoney was told this and cried and laughed so hard the doctor came and said he was gone beyond recall so they carted him off to the City of Home, where they keep old people who are helpless or demented” (178). This quote shows that Mr. Timoney went to the City of Home because he laughed at how his dog bit the postman, the milkman and a passing nun.
  17. 14. Angela moved her bed downstairs because she was having trouble going up the stairs. “Mam says she has trouble climbing up the stairs and she’s moving her bed to the kitchen” (179). This quote shows Angela was having trouble going up the stairs so she moved her bed and she thought it was okay because school was over and she can stay in bed as long as she likes in the kitchen.
  18. 15. When Bridey and Angela are talking by the fire, Bridey noticed that the baby was choking. “Suddenly Bridey is gasping, Jesus, Angela, there’s something wrong with that child. Mam is out of the chair, hugging the child, moaning. Oh, Jesus, Bridey, he’s choking” (181). This quote shows that Bridey saw what was happening to the child before Angela did.
  19. 16. Alphonsus Joseph is the newborn child’s name. “Malachy says, Mam, what’s the baby’s name? Alphonsus Joseph” (182). This shows that Angela decided on what to name her baby. The name is different, unlike any other name.
