  4. Hi Allan, Kris and JT!
  5.
  6. It's now about five weeks since I sent you an email and I guess that something went wrong and I should not wait any longer before writing you again. This time I have a question for you as well.
  7.
  8. Thanks a lot to all of you (TJ as well) for the time and effort that you put into BSDNow! Linux has given me back the feeling of actually owning my PCs but *BSD has been a true eye-opener for me and made me learn so much more in-depth things about operating systems (and hardware, too). Like Kris once said: "The water's nice and warm on the BSD side of the fence" and I'm really enjoying learning things again (in contrast to Linux where things have gone more and more frustrating for me in the last couple of years - and I think that I'm not alone in feeling like this).

  10. BSDNow! started about the same time I was beginning my *BSD journey and I actually know that it existed (read about it on the Dragonfly digest, I think). I was interested but very short on time and thus decided to take a look at it "at a later time(tm)". Even though that usually is just a variant of "never", I finally did jump in about mid November last year. Originally I had intended to watch the first episode (it's always interesting how things begin) and then watch the newest ones on a regular basis if I like it.

  12. Well, I was hooked by the first one so that I watched the second one right after it. Once that was over, too, I was sold! Since I didn't want to miss any interviews or other interesting piece of information, I watched all of the past episodes until I finally caught up with the most recent one in April. So I've been listening to you almost an a daily basis for some month (it was kind of fun to re-live some of the past things like Heartbleed, Shellshock or *BSD releases). I've learned a lot and I'm glad that I didn't skip a single episode. There's just so many little things that come in handy spread all over them.

  15. I maintain a blog that started with Linux stuff but I've been writing more and more *BSD articles lately. The latest two are kind of a tutorial about setting up a dual-boot FreeBSD/OpenBSD machine with full disk encryption (UFS for FreeBSD in the first post, ZFS in the second one). Here are the links in case you want to mention them as beastie bits or something (and yes, that's of course BSDNow! playing in smplayer on the picture in the second post ;)):

  21. Now here's my question:
  22.
  23. How does FreeBSD's versioning work? Let's take OpenSMTPD as an example. It currently is version "5.9.2p1_1,1". "5.9.2" is the upstream version, sure. "p1" is the patch level, I guess. Does this mean FreeBSD exclusive patches that are not in the upstream version were applied by the ports maintainer? Or is it something else? Since versions with underscores are pretty common, I guess that "_1" means "revision 1" because a recompile was needed without changing the actual version of the program. Am I right here? But then there's sometimes a comma and that one eludes me! What does that mean? I would really appreciate if you coud shed some light on that topic.
  24.
  25. Thanks again for the great show! BTW: Kris, I loved that "The place to B...SD!" - and while I understand that the time was right for a change when the producer changed, I heared you say it a couple of times again after that. If you ask me, that was kind of a characteristic thing for the show and things like that are best kept like they are!
  26.
  27. Best regards,
  28. Michael

  30. PS: In the earlier shows you used to mention the live show but you haven't done so for quite some time now. Maybe it would be a good idea to talk about that from time to time so that newcomers know about it? Also the "Live" section on the homepage is a bit... minimalistic. May I suggest you at least put the times there? That would probably help a lot of people who want to watch the show live!
