- past continuous - gives background information about what was already happening
- simple past - gives “action” information about things that happened during the background activity
- form: was/were + verb(ing)

- Yes, you were./No, you weren’t. / Yes, I was./No, I wasn’t.

- Conjunctions:
- I was eating when you called. / When you called, I was eating.

- Grammar: past perfect
- meaning: things that happened before another “focus” time in the past
- (Paragraph 3 is about 2004. That’s the “focus” time. Anything that happened before 2004 is in past perfect.)
- - This is common in narratives. The “main action” is simple past, and “flashbacks” or background are past perfect.
- He said that he had done his homework the night before.
