  25. There are 3 basic patterns of verbs followed by infinitives:
  26. 1 verb + infinitive (no object): I agreed to help.
  27. 2 verb + object + infinitive (always with an object): I taught myself to read music.
  28. 3 verb + (object) + infinitive (sometimes with an object): I expect to pass. / I expect you to pass.

  30. Pattern 1
  31. p. 96 exercise 7 - With your partner, decide how to complete the first seven sentences. If you don’t know a word, use your phone to check a dictionary (not a translator).
  32. 1 to help. / to teach their children. / to feed their chilren.
  33. 2 to read. / to write. / to speak well. / to work in teams.
  34. 3 to drive a car. / to get a good education. / to buy a house.
  35. 4 to be bad. / to get worse every day.
  36. 5 to answer questions. / to talk in public.
  37. 6 to help. / to pay.
  38. 7 to drink a beer with you. / to do good things.

  40. Pattern 2 - These verbs always have an object before the infinitive
  41. p. 97 exercise 9 - Write sentences for the first five pairs of verbs.
  42. 1 My teacher often reminds me to pay attention in class. / You need to remind me to pay you.
  43. 2 The teacher’s warning us not to forget to do the homework. / My friend will warn me not to forget the phone.
  44. 3 We convinced him to help.
  45. 4 My boss hired me to work hard. / This school hired me to teach TOEFL.
  46. 5 My parents require me to pay bills.
  47. 6 Some countries forbid gay couples to marry.
  48. I need you to remind me to pay you to help me to do my homework.

  50. Pattern 3 - Without an object, it means the subject of the main verb also does the infinitive verb.
  51. Josh expects to pass the class. = Josh thinks Josh will pass.
  52. Josh expects Tom to pass the class. = Josh thinks Tom will pass.
