- His teacher expects him to voluteer to read the day’s list of things to do.
- Her teacher expects her to pay attention in class.
- HIs teacher expects him to put away his phone at the beginning of class.
- Their teacher expects them to get out their homework at the beginning of class.
- Her teacher expects her to have done the homework before the beginning of class.
- His teacher expects him to have finished a snack before the beginning of class.
- Her teacher expects her to have finished her phone conversations before the beginning of class.

- There are 3 basic patterns of verbs followed by infinitives:
- 1 verb + infinitive (no object): I agreed to help.
- 2 verb + object + infinitive (always with an object): I taught myself to read music.
- 3 verb + (object) + infinitive (sometimes with an object): I expect to pass. / I expect you to pass.

- Pattern 1
- p. 96 exercise 7 - With your partner, decide how to complete the first seven sentences. If you don’t know a word, use your phone to check a dictionary (not a translator).
- 1 to help. / to teach their children. / to feed their chilren.
- 2 to read. / to write. / to speak well. / to work in teams.
- 3 to drive a car. / to get a good education. / to buy a house.
- 4 to be bad. / to get worse every day.
- 5 to answer questions. / to talk in public.
- 6 to help. / to pay.
- 7 to drink a beer with you. / to do good things.

- Pattern 2 - These verbs always have an object before the infinitive
- p. 97 exercise 9 - Write sentences for the first five pairs of verbs.
- 1 My teacher often reminds me to pay attention in class. / You need to remind me to pay you.
- 2 The teacher’s warning us not to forget to do the homework. / My friend will warn me not to forget the phone.
- 3 We convinced him to help.
- 4 My boss hired me to work hard. / This school hired me to teach TOEFL.
- 5 My parents require me to pay bills.
- 6 Some countries forbid gay couples to marry.
- I need you to remind me to pay you to help me to do my homework.

- Pattern 3 - Without an object, it means the subject of the main verb also does the infinitive verb.
- Josh expects to pass the class. = Josh thinks Josh will pass.
- Josh expects Tom to pass the class. = Josh thinks Tom will pass.

- 1 I like to cook, but I like someone else to clean.
- 5 I have arranged to do my homework. I have arranged for someone else to do my laundry.
