  73. > "Anon, you are FUCKED"
  74. > Friend's mom starts wailing and crying
  75. > "Why did you do that, anon?"
  76. > Over and over, hysterical
  77. > I start crying too, but I look like a pissed off baboon when I cry
  78. > She thinks I'm sneering at her and walks away crying harder

  90. > A minute later she smells the shit stank and looks at me
  91. > She pulls over to the side hard, my head hits the window
  92. > She starts screaming at me in Chinese, gesturing for me to get out
  93. > Yeah, she was asian, but she had perfect new englad accent, surprised the shit out of me
  94. > Get out of car

  141. > Ripped out some more pages and fashioned myself a makeshift King James diaper
  142. > Wear it under uniform
  143. > Audibly crinkly, but I'm going to be late for training
  144. > Hope we're shooting again
  145. > Turns out to be marching in formation before weapons training
  146. > 10 minutes in the drill sergeant notices the sound
  147.

  149. > The guys start looking at me
  150. > Drill sergeant makes me jog in place
  151. > Loud crinkling
  152. > Asks what the hell that sound is
  153. > Throat closes, can't answer
  154. > Orders me to drop my pants
  155. > King James Diaper exposed to the world
  156. > He swears low, and tells me to run 200 laps around the boot camp
  157. > No choice, do it
  158. > Half an hour later, I'm running through the less visible wooded side of the camp
  159. > None other than mr. Jesus Avenger, who said he would kill me if he could get away with it, pops out from behind a bush
  160. > He's got a bottle of jack daniels in one hand and a handgun in another
  161. > Smacks me in the face with the bottle and shoots me in the foot

  173. > Start putting out job applications
  174. > My name and story have spread, and no business around town wanted anything to do with me
  175. > A month later, dad thinks I'm a bum and haven't been looking for a job

  178. > This was probably the worst point in my life, but it gets better from here
  179. > Become a vagrant for 2 years
  180. > Dehumanizing and disgusting at first

  187. > Bub's girlfriend died of a heroin overdose 3 months before
  188. > Met them under a bridge on the outside of town
  189. > We traveled together and kept each other company
  190. > Wake up in the middle of the night once to a weird sound
  191. > Saw they were sucking each other's dicks
  192. > notonetojudge.jpg
  193. > Go back to sleep
  194. > A month later, they tried to kill me
  195.
  196. > Bub, Shaky and I were walking through a town one day
  197. > See a $50.00 bill
  198. > We're all thinking "booze!"
  199. > I want Jim Beam, but shaky's an alcoholic
  200. > Wants as much cheap 6.00 vodka as 50 can get
  201. > Fuck you, I found it
  202. > Bub comes at me with a half pair of scissors
  203. > out of fucking nowhere
  204. > He stabs me twice in the leg, grabs the money
  205. > Dirty ass pals run away
  206. > Never see them again
  207. > 3 days later get a fever from infection
  208. > Collapse on somebody's stoop for a few hours
  209. > Pus from the wounds seeping through my torn dirty jeans
  210. > A cop pulls up and tells me to keep walking
  211. > Try to stand up, leg hurts too much
  212. > Cop comes over and yanks me to my feet
  213. > Yells "get moving"
  214. > Throws me forward, I grab my leg in pain
  215. > Wounds are open and bleeding again
  216. > Cop finally sees my condition
  217. > He takes me to the homeless shelter the next town over
  218. > Doesn't say a word to me the whole way
  219. > At shelter, a cute redhead comes in with a first aid kit and a box of gloves
  220. > She seemed upbeat and genuinely sorry about my wounds
  221. > First time being treated like a human by a female in a long time
  222. > Sprout boner, throbbing in pants
  223. > She sees, vague look of disgust flashes over her face
  224. > I feel bad and apologize
  225. > She laughs nervously and treats my wounds
  226. > Gives me a tube of topical antibiotic
  227. > Tells me it won't get me high and is only worth a couple bucks
  228. > So much for being treated like human
  229. > After a couple days the wounds start to heal
  230. > Shelter gives the boot, and I get back to drifting
  231. > Fast forward a few months and it's winter
  232. > Wandering through a new, more urban town, it's 1:00 AM
  233. > Roads are empty
  234. > Found a winter jacket just my size in a goodwill donation bin
  235. > Walking along, I see a lady on a corner
  236. > I know she's a hooker, but she's barely wearing anything
  237. > It's freezing out, she's shivering
  238. > I go up to her and say hi
  239. > She asks if I got cash - no
  240. > Tells me to fuck off, sounds tired
  241. > Offer my jacket, she looks at me strange for a few seconds
  242. > Says she can't cover up on the job
  243. > Thanks me anyways and smiles
  244. > She's not all that skanky looking
  245. > A little worn, but there was still a spark of dignity
  246. > I stayed and made small talk with her
  247. > keep her mind off the cold
  248. > Around 3 AM a dirty Pontiac pulls up
  249. > Heavy set latin guy at the wheel, screams for Denise
  250. > Her name was Denise
  251. > Gives me the thousand yard stare and asks if I'm a customer
  252. > I say no, he tells me to fuck off
  253. > As I walk away, he starts smacking her and asking who I was
  254. > Throws her in the car
  255. > Wonder about her all day
  256. > Sleep in vacant ally
  257. > The next night, I came back to that corner and she was there
  258. > She had a black eye, and was counting bills on the sly
  259. > Cautious at first, she says Sam will cut us both up if he sees me again
  260. > I tell her I'm passing through
  261. > Sit behind a box in the alley behind her out of sight
  262. > We talk all night, between customers
  263. > Almost 3, she tells me to get lost before Sam comes around
  264. > I take off
  265. > It goes on like this for almost a month
  266. > We form a bond, we're friends
  267. > The drifter and the hooker
  268. > She jokes that there should be a kids show based on us
  269. > One day Sam came rolling up in his pontiac a few hours early
  270. > Sam pinned me against the wall and pointed a gun at me
  271. > Asked calmly who I was
  272. > I'm anon, just a drifter
  273. > Try to tell him I'm only friends with Denise
  274. > He's got 2 guys with him, they search me for swindled money
  275. > There is non
  276. > He figures I'm not scoring free poon, I'm too filthy
  277. > Drops me, kicks me, and tells me to fuck off
  278. > Says I'm tainting the product
  279. > Says he'll shoot me if he sees me there again
  280. > I dropped in on Denise the next night for only 20 seconds
  281. > I said good bye and walked away
  282. > I never saw her again
  283. > A week later I'm on the edge of the urban side of town eating a can of tuna
  284. > I see Sam's pontiac driving towards me
  285. > I duck into an alley, and he stops the car
  286. > I hear several people behind me, running
  287. > They catch up and tackle me
  288. > I roll over, Sam's staring at me, breathing real heavy
  289. > He pulls out a gun and sits on a crate
  290. > Lights a cigarette, and catches his breath
  291. > Eyes locked whole time
  292. > Finally he says something
  293. > "Denise is the only reason I'm not killing you today"
  294. > Turns out she made up a bunch of shit to not get me killed
  295. > Among those claims are "expert smuggler looking for work
  296. > Told him I was around all the time, I'm that sneaky
  297. > My mind shits itself a little bit when he asks me if I want to make 2 grand
  298. > Hell yes
  299. > Gives me a bubble wrap manilla folder and told me to take it to the other side of town
  300. > Didn't trust his guys to not get shot
  301. > Told me he'd kill me on the spot if I refused
  302. > Naturally, I accepted
  303. > Told me if I don't go through with it he'd kill Denise
  304. > I told him I would do it
  305. > Gives me folded napkin with an address and "Yellow Beatle" written on it
  306. > I GTFO
  307. > When I get to the address there's 2 chinese guys sitting in a beatle.
  308. > I go up to the window
  309. > One sees me, pulls out a gun
  310. > I stop and pull the envelope out of my coat
  311. > Window rolls down
  312. > I hand him the package and walk away
  313. > A few blocks down, I hear yelling and tires burning out
  314. > Turn around, the beetle is rushing at me
  315. > Passenger with gun pointed out the window
  316. > I hit the ground as they drive past, then tuck down a side road
  317. > After a while, I think I lost them
  318. > Walking over bridge over river, gonna hide out until I know they're gone
  319. > Halfway across the bridge the beatle reappears
  320. > I try to run, but get a bullet in the leg
  321. > Car stops, asian guy gets out
  322. > Nobody else around
  323. > Picks me up by collar, but it rips
  324. > Grabs me by the neck and shoots me twice in the stomach
  325. > Throws me over the rail
  326. > OHSHITOHSHIT is the only thing in my mind as I hit the icy water 10 feet below
  327. > I remember floating downstream, into the wilderness flanking the urbanized town
  328. > Trying desperately to stay afloat
  329. > I got really tired and weak, lost feeling in my arms and legs bumping against rocks
  330. > Last thing I saw was a dot of light onshore, ahead
  331. > Wake up.
  332. > I'm covered in a brown fleece blanket right next to a roaring fire
  333. > I stand up. My worn clothes are hanging from a stick, drying
  334. > There's a pair of damp moccasins by the fire, drying
  335. > I look around in a daze. I hear the river rushing a few yards away
  336. > There's a fucking teepee pitched under an oak tree
  337. > And a fucking indian standing outside of it, smoking pot
  338. > I try to get up, he tells me to lay and get warm or I'll die
  339. > I lay back down and fall asleep
  340. > A few seconds later, he's shaking me awake
  341. > Tells me it's dangerous to go to sleep that cold
  342. > Turns out the indian, this balding middle aged guy with pot and glasses, is named Hector.
  343. > Hector tells me he's making a spiritual journey on foot to Arizona
  344. > He's full Navajo and wants to meet his relatives in a reserve
  345. > Asks if I want to join him
  346. > Say yes, free pot
  347. > We spent the next 6 months walking to Arizona.
  348. > At first, I took him for a guy in a midlife crisis, but as we traveled, we bonded
  349. > Taught me how to hunt and fish, and keep myself clean in the wilderness
  350. > How to craft my own clothes and supplies from the fat of the land
  351. > Once we got to the desert regions, he taught me how to survive like a navajo
  352. > He came from a U.S. background, but he's definitely done his research
  353. > One day, we found a peyote plant
  354. > He was really happy, and asked if I wanted the spiritual awakening from his people
  355. > Bastard got all mystic on me and told me I would find my spirit guide
  356. > In the moment, I agree
  357. > Being high on peyote was the most surreal thing I've ever experience
  358. > Strange, soothing sounds all around
  359. > Time and space keep rearranging themselves
  360. > I see a temple made out of eyes
  361. > A fox tapped me on the shoulder then ran inside
  362. > I followed
  363. > There's a human figure made out of water standing next to me
  364. > We walk the same and moved the same
  365. > In the temple there was a roll of toilet paper
  366. > My mind went into this weird, highly perceptive loop
  367. > Weird moment of clarity in the insanity forming all around me
  368. > I realize in this moment the strange nature of life
  369. > A spiral of events, spurred by a single missed roll of toilet paper
  370. > This is fucking insane
  371. > I'm doing peyote in the desert with a drug-addict native american because of TP
  372. > What the hell happened
  373. > The rest of the high was an ocean of blurred images and colors
  374. > Forgot my revelation until much later
  375. > The next day, we reach the reserve
  376.
  377. > When we walked into the reserve, we got funny looks
  378. > Half-native outsider with a scruffy white guy
  379. > Apprehension begins to fade once we introduced ourselves to a group of elders outside a trailer
  380. > It's sunset, there's a cool breeze blowing
  381. > There's a smattering of Hogans and decorated trailers throughout the reserve
  382. > They let us stay, if we told our stories
  383. > Hector told his; he was a technician in a medium town yearning for his roots
  384. > I told my story, and they laughed
  385. > We stayed the night
  386. > Then the next night
  387. > Nights turn to weeks, to months
  388. > It's weird being accepted after all this
  389. > When we first arrived and got the full affect of the reserve, I don't think it was entirely what Hector was expecting
  390. > He was looking forward to nature and mysticism. The reserve has modernized a bit
  391. > There was Navajo artwork, food, and stories, but we had cable TV, internet, and plumbing
  392. > He was a bit disappointed, but reconciled
  393. > Tells me "if you're going to chase your dreams, you have to be ready for disappointment"
  394. > The people are nice
  395. > Let us stay
  396. > Eventually I get a job in a nearby town, call center
  397. > Started taking community college classes online for IT
  398. > Studying A+ certification
  399. > Get a job with a tech firm, on salary 26,000 a year starting
  400. >During my stay at the reserve and subsuquent success, I caught the interest of a native girl my age
  401. > Her name's Marissa
  402. > Save money, decide it's time to leave
  403. > I donate a few thousand to the reserve as a thank you
  404. > Get airline ticket back to my hometown, where Marissa and I had an apartment and jobs lined up
  405. > Looking forward to seeing my parents
  406. > Planning surprise visit
  407. > Look out window, watching the country fly by below me
  408. > Clear sky
  409. > Remember back on how I walked across the land
  410. > Not mad about anything
  411. > Happy and amazed at how things turned out
  412. > Settling into apartment and job
  413. > I'm clean cut and wearing a suit
  414. > Go back to my parent's old house
