- >"So what are we watching tonight then?" Celestia asks as you enter the room.
- >She's seated on the couch, lounging against a corner pillow.
- >You put down the bowl of popcorn you were carrying, and smile at her.
- "I thought we'd have a trip down memory lane, and watch something spooky."
- >"Something Spooky? Anon, are you sure?" She says in a uneasy voice. "What about Da-"
- "Ah, ah," you interrupt her with a waggling finger. "Dawn said she's got to study for a test tomorrow, so tonight it's just you and me for movie night."
- "Just like old times."
- >"Oh?" She raises a brow. "So you will be holding me close during the scary parts, just like old times, then?"
- >You flash her another smile.
- "Well, that's the whole point with scary movies, isn't it?"
- >"Is that right?"
- >You shrug.
- "It's the part I like about them, at least."
- >"Me too," she admits, with a small, calculated smile.
- >It had been quite a while since the two of you last watched a horror film together.
- >Everything was just as you remembered it though.
- >The room was a realm of pure black aside from the movie screen.
- >You and Celestia were pressed up tight against each other on the couch.
- >Celestia, of course, didn't actually get very frightened. It was just something that came with her age, you always assumed.
- >You, on the other hand, weren't quite as resilient.
- >Those damned jump scares always got you, where as Celestia would just stifle a giggle.
- >So in truth, you were holding your wife close more for you own comfort than hers.
- >But you didn't really mind.
- >And you're pretty sure she didn't either.
- >You reach out to grab a fistful of popcorn when you hear a door creak open.
- >Both you and Celestia turn your heads to see Dawn standing anxiously at the doorway to her room.
- "Something wrong, sweetie?"
- >"Why are all the lights out?" She asks, as her eyes try to adjust to the darkness.
- "You can't watch a scary movie with the lights on, can you?"
- >"A scary move?" She says, taking a few steps closer to the couch.
- >"Can I watch too?"
- "You finished with your studies already?"
- >She remains quiet for a spell as her eyes travel between you and the movie screen.
- >"Yes."
- "Well, grab a seat then," you say, patting the spot next to you on the couch.
- >"Anon, do you really think this is wise?" Celestia interjects.
- >You shrug.
- "She's not a baby anymore Tia, so if she wants to watch, I'd say it's fine."
- "Besides, the only other option would be to change the movie, and then we'd never get to know what happend to the groundskeeper."
- >Your wife shoots you a sceptical look, but remains silent, as Dawn climbs onto the couch.
- >Dawn sits herself by your side, leaning back against the couch at first.
- >But it doesn't take long before she's squeezed herself in under your arm, hugging you tightly.
- >An arm around your daughter, and the other around your wife, you spend the rest of the evening enjoying the movie, but pining for popcorn.
- >You flinch when an unkown, cracking sound chimes through your room.
- >Slowly, you lift your head up from the pillow too peer out into the dark.
- >Muted moonlight trickled into your room, casting blurred shadows that seemed to writhe and roam in the corner of your eye.
- >Was your room always this scary at night?
- >You lay you head back down, pulling your covers up higher.
- >Why did you have to watch that stupid movie?
- >You were much happier when you had no idea who the Headless Horse was.
- >The silence of night was suddenly broken by a weak, thumping sound.
- >Lifting your head up again, you listen closely.
- >The sound was getting stronger.
- >It sounded like... Hoofsteps.
- >Hoofsteps that were getting closer and closer to your door.
- >You gasp.
- >It was just like in the movie; hoofsteps in the dead of the night... The Headless Horse was comming for you.
- >You feel your body grow ever colder at each muffled thud.
- >Holding your breath, you strain your ears to listen as the steps come to a halt, right outside your door.
- >You hear the door handle begin to turn, and you fall back onto the bed, pulling the covers up over your head.
- >Crawling into a ball, you hide underneath the thin fabric, hoping it will be able to shield you from the Headless Horse.
- >Your body shakes and shivers as you hear the door creak open.
- "Please go away, please go away, please go away," you begin to mumble absently, as you press your eyes shut.
- >The hoofsteps resume, now inside your room, drawing nearer to your bed with each step.
- >"Sweetheart, are you alright?" A familiar voice asks.
- "M-Mommy?" Your voice trembles.
- >"What's wrong?" You hear her voice again.
- "Mommy!" You shout with all your might as you burst forth from the covers.
- >You wrap your arms around her neck and hug her tighter than ever before, as you feel tears begin to stain your eyes.
- >She drapes a hoof across your back, pulling you close.
- >"It's okay sweetie, mommy is here," she coos softly as she strokes your back.
- >You press you face into her neck, your whole body hitching as you cry freely.
- "There were strange noises, and I thought the Headless Horse was comming to get me, and I was so scared," you blurt out incoherently, inbetween sobs.
- >"There, there," she whispers in a soothing voice, "You're safe with mommy."
- >You drift out of your sleep for a spell, and immediately realize that something is amiss.
- >The bed lay cold and empty next to you.
- >Your hands fumble about in the darkness, searching for the warmth of your wife, but finding nothing.
- >Sitting up, now fully awake, you scan the room, finding no sign of Celestia.
- >What would she be doing up and about at this hour?
- >Slightly worried, and very disgruntled, you crawl out of bed.
- >You'll be damned if you're gonna sleep alone in a cold bed.
- >Stepping out of the bedroom, you notice that the door to Dawn's room is cracked open.
- >You push the door open further, and peek through.
- >Inside you find your wife cuddled up with your daughter, both of them sleeping peacefully.
- >You guess Celestia must have gotten up to check on Dawn, and felt obliged to stay.
- >You sigh.
- >Maybe you should have listened to her about the movie.
- >She always was better at the parenting stuff than you.
- >On quiet feet, you walk up to the bed.
- >You look down at your sleeping daughter, noting the content smile gracing her features.
- >Leaning down, you gently brush her hair.
- >It feels like she's grown up so fast.
- >But, you guess she's still too young for horror films.
- >You can't say the results of your poor parenting were all bad though, you think to yourself as you crawl into the bed.
- >You hug your daughter close, careful not to wake her, and let your hand slip over one of your wife's hooves, squeezing it softly.
- >It's been far too long since you last fell asleep holding your entire family in your arms.
- >And as you join them in their peaceful slumber, your own smile is even more noticeable than Dawn's.
