  1. This post should serve as a warning to those considering using Couchsurfing.org. Being adventurous, I decided to fly into SFO last night with no accommodations or idea where I was going to stay. But my eagerness to quickly find a place got the best of me.
  2.
  3. Between connecting flights I opened Couchsurfing to see if I could, well, find a couch to crash on for a few nights. Soon after inputting my travel dates and plans during my time in the city, I had a response -- someone offering me a place to stay in Oakland! Not exactly SF, but close enough for me to compromise and jump on it. I mean, it was that or $50+/night on Airbnb, right?

  5. Once I land at SFO I receive an email from my host instructing me to ride BART to the [redacted] station where I will receive a pickup. I felt a little anxious considering it was my first time couchsurfing, but overall everything is looking good.

  7. Getting picked up was a breeze. My host was quite, friendly. But once we arrived at his house, the vibe changed very quickly. Turns out, and with no mention of this on his Couchsurfing profile, my host was a nudist. He took off all his clothes in the entryway as we arrived. Now, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with being a nudist. But why not mention this beforehand? The goal in the beginning should be to set expectations, no?

  9. I posted about this predicament on Facebook and received some flack for complaining, which is understandable. I should be open-minded, and I am, but it just took me off guard. For more context, I'm a young, male developer and my host was in his mid-50's, at least. After he finished taking off his clothes he showed me to my room and handed me a beer.
  10. In the end what resulted in me leaving was the fact that we had to sleep in the same bed, and he chose to jerk off with me right there. I was laying in bed browsing Twitter on my phone, and he lays down and does it immediately. That's where I draw the line. I sat in the kitchen the rest of the night working and left in the morning.

  12. I don't regret using Couchsurfing. My previous experiences with the site were positive, and one bad experience won't change that. But what I will say is that you really need to have clear communication with your potential hosts to have a decent idea of what you're going to get.
