  4. "I'm also sad to see that programs like the Nashville Software School are not mentioned when talking about "Hiring Locally". This program exists because the schools mentioned just aren't putting out people with the necessary skills to program and deliver. These are programs run by locals, for locals. Furthermore, the program attracts talent *to* Nashville to invest. You want to talk about hiring Top Engineers... you have to grow them. Pair someone new with someone great, and grow a good relationship. You'll have trust and loyalty beyond belief. Likewise, how about advertising good and quality positions? How many positions in Nashville are either masked in some way? I think it's great to know what you want, but how also are you engaging the developer? Not one developer I know wants to be just a hired gun, but rather contribute to something bigger. If you're just giving project deliverables, then it's just another body converting glucose to bits. But, if you spell out how these positions actually impact a company, and illustrate the problems that you're trying to solve... I bet you'd get more interest. I'll tell you, if I get one more call for a Dynamic Position on a Fast Growing Team than essentially is a keyboard jockey, it's not going to be a good day. Likewise, to Ed Dodds's point... salary ranges are abysmal in Nashville. It has gotten better, but as housing prices increase, salaries are not. Leaving a job is stressful and hard, but it really is the only way to get salary ranges beyond the 6% for absolutely busting ass and sacrificing life and family. 2-3% is the norm, and just sad to see. Full disclosure: I am employed by a company not based in Nashville because not many of the things I illustrate above are not here. I want them to be here, and I want to help. What needs to change?"
